'The Oklahoman's' Sooners with breakout potential in 2025
So, Ryan Aber and Colton Sulley at The Oklahoman took a look at six potential candidates for breakout seasons as OU gets ready for fall camp this week in hopes of shedding the memories of last year's 6-7 season.
Kendal Daniels spent his first four years of college playing at Oklahoma State. The Beggs High School graduate as a regular in 2023 and earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in 2024 as a safety. Last year, OSU used him more aggressively in the pass rush, and his tackles for loss totals and sack totals went up as his total tackles went down. Head coach Brent Venables, who will also call the team's defensive plays, anticipates a similar style this year with the Sooners.
"Kendal Daniels jumping into that linebacker group has made everybody better. He's got great versatility," Venables said.
Marvin Jones and Taylor Wein made the list as defensive ends.
Jones is penciled in as starter on the opposite side of Thomas, having played previously in the Southeastern Conference at Georgia and then last year in the Atlantic Coast Conference at at Florida State. Jones recorded four sacks with the Seminoles and, even if he doesn't start at Oklahoma, should see plenty of time.
Wein is a bit more unknown, having logged most of his time on special teams last year. But Venables and Thomas both praised him this summer.
'Taylor Wein wants it. You can tell,' Thomas said. 'So I'm not gonna be surprised when y'all are talking about him in the media and whenever he gets five sacks and it's like, going crazy, it won't be a surprise, obviously I see him every day.'
Derek Simmons, a transfer from Western Carolina, was selected on the offensive line. With the Catamounts, Simmons started 16 games over the last two seasons. And last year, he didn't allow a single sack while lining up at tackle. The experience came at the FCS level, but Oklahoma's offensive line needs all the help it can get after leading the nation in sacks allowed last year.
At skill positions, tight end Kaden Helms and wide receiver Isaiah Sategna, a transfer from Arkansas, made Aber and Sulley's list. Helms has spent most of the last two years injured, but was loaded with potential when Oklahoma signed him out of Nebraska in the Class of 2022. Sategna left his hometown of Fayetteville despite a strong season last year in which he caught 37 passes for 491 yards. Both players provide Mateer with even more weapons at his disposal.

Thomas Frank provides Dominic Solanke injury update after Tottenham striker misses win over Arsenal
Thomas Frank confirmed Dominic Solanke is 'close' to returning from an ankle injury. The Tottenham striker was again left out of the squad as his team-mates beat Arsenal 1-0 in Hong Kong, having not trained in an open session at the stadium earlier this week. Spurs face Newcastle on Sunday in Seoul before they take on Bayern Munich in Germany on August 7. Six days later Frank's side go up up against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup. Speaking after the victory over north London rivals Arsenal, Frank provided a positive injury update on Solanke. 'He's close, if not for Sunday then he should be fit to play against Bayern,' the Spurs boss said. That will be welcome news for Frank, who has been without Solanke since the opening pre-season match against Reading with what was described as a 'minor' injury. Spurs now fly to South Korea where they can expect huge support as a result of Heung-min Son's presence. Frank paid tribute to the number of Spurs fans who have turned up on the tour so far, admitting it had made clear to him the size of the job he has taken on. 'I think I had a good idea but you don't really know until you step into it and I think seeing how important it is for the fans,' he said. 'The fans have been waiting every day for us, every morning and evening, and the fans that came to open training and were at the game. 'You understand more and more, first and foremost how big a club Spurs is and the importance of the club.'

Maddison's injury 'looks bad'
Tottenham midfielder James Maddison suffered "a bad injury" during the pre-season game with Newcastle in South Korea, says head coach Thomas Frank. Maddison had only been on the pitch nine minutes after coming on as a substitute, before he was seen hobbling off the ball. He was stretchered off after receiving some treatment and was in visible pain as he left the field. "We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before," said Frank post-match. "Sometimes in life and in football, things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today [in that game]. "It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son [Heung-min] from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players." Maddison missed the Europa League final with a knee problem sustained in May and was only just returning for Spurs.

Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas likely to be battle of unbeatens
College football season is less than a month away, and Oklahoma appears to be on the rise. At least, the Sooners appear to be set to improve on last year's 6-7 season. That will almost certainly be the case if Brad Crawford at CBS Sports has his preseason prediction come true. Crawford looked at each of the 16 teams in the Southeastern Conference and predicted when each would be handed its first loss in league play. For Oklahoma, it comes in the second SEC game, though by that point, OU will already have been, at least, 4-1, in Crawford's predictions. That second SEC game, by the way? It's the Red River Rivalry. Imagine the hype for Red River if both teams come in unbeaten and inside the top 10? It's possible. If the Sooners take out Michigan and Auburn during the opening month of the campaign, Brent Venables' new-look team will have a perfect record going to Dallas. - Crawford, CBS Sports It wasn't that long ago when OU and Texas both met as undefeateds in the regular season. Back in 2023, the 12th-ranked Sooners and No. 5 Longhorns played to a 34-30 Oklahoma win at the Cotton Bowl. Brent Venables' team would stumble over the next month with losses against Kansas and Oklahoma State to stifle a potentially massive season, but that was then. Texas may enter 2025 as the No. 1 team in the nation, and Oklahoma appears likely to be ranked in the top-25. Another year of each entering Dallas unbeaten may provide a mutual top-10 matchup. The Sooners, and Venables specifically, could really use it, and with John Mateer and Jadyn Ott on offense, it's definitely possible. Crawford believes that Venables needs a strong start to the 2025 season more than just about any other coach. With games against Michigan and Auburn in the first four weeks, Venables and the Sooners have an early opportunity to make a statement heading even before they get to the Red River Showdown.
