Love in Exile: New book explains why we're still struggling to find love and romance
With burnout from dating apps, healing from broken hearts, and the mind games and power plays of situationships, more people are struggling to find a partner than ever before.
It's an issue that bestselling author Shon Faye tackles in her new book, Love in Exile. 'We ache for love, but love eludes us,' she opens in the preface to the text, which has become a sensation on social media. 'Out of this crisis comes so much of what it means to be human.'
Comparing romance to addiction, the writer says euphoric feelings of lust and attraction can cloud judgment and lead to confusion.
'At a cultural level there is a widespread mistaking of codependence for love in our culture,' she told an audience at the South Bank Centre in London on Wednesday (26 February).
'For example, if we take sentences that we often consider a sign of great passion and romance like, 'I think about all the time', 'I can't live without', 'I need', 'I don't know what I'm going to do without', and say that about heroin addiction. But if we say that about our ex...'
However, she insists that true love is an act of will, and not a fleeting feeling, referring to the work of bell hooks. 'Love is an act of will, love is a verb, it's something we essentially get up to every day to choose to do for ourselves in the world,' she says. 'The idea of love [we have] is very similar to addiction.'
An obsessive and euphoric kind of love can be a sign that it isn't real, says Faye. 'It's about the gratification of the obsessed, the object of the obsession is actually kind of irrelevant. It's mostly selfish. We're staring at the projection of a person.'
She also adds that desire can complicate matters, with women being discouraged from owning their passion and being judged for expressing it. Rather, they are encouraged to emulate the object of desire. 'For women in a patriarchal society to even know what your own desire is and to be able to say it,' is a challenge.
Childhood trauma, family dysfunctions and substance abuse, gender, all pose obstacles, for which the political system does not offer any support. Faye refers to her own experience as a transgender woman and believes that one of the biggest reasons love is difficult to find is because we live in a 'techno-capitalist dystopia'. In such a system we are encouraged to commodify ourselves in a transactional manner, making real love difficult to find.
Friendships, family, and community all offer avenues for love and connection, which are undervalued in comparison to romantic relationships, she adds. 'Friendship provides us a model for moving forward,' she says. 'I talk a lot about friendship as a form of love that's very meaningful in my life. However, friendship serves no aims to capitalism whatsoever.'
Ultimately, she says, we can only find love through courage and risk.
'The only thing I can do is try,' she writes. 'Love is, after all, something you only get better at giving and a little better at losing every time you actually try to do it. Learning this way, in practice not theory, humiliates and hurts sometimes.
'There's no way to feel love without also experiencing loss, which is terrifying. For me, acknowledging this terror is far better than trying to ameliorate it or wish it away. Love is a risky business, and it hurts. I want to bear witness to that and to still try anyway. Now, more than ever.'

Woman 'thought she was at hotel with Wayne Lineker' until she discovered truth
People have been left in stitches of laughter after hearing about a woman's story while holidaying in Ibiza - she thought she had hit the jackpot and met Wayne Lineker but the truth left her red-faced A young woman on a girls' holiday with her mate was absolutely buzzing after she believed she'd encountered her "hero", Wayne Lineker. Gary Lineker 's brother can frequently be found chatting to punters at his cherished party destination, Ocean Beach in Ibiza - with countless visitors clamouring for snaps with his during their visit. The Spanish beach club has enjoyed tremendous success since launching 13 years ago, and remains essential for Brits visiting the party isle. Celebrities including Ed Sheeran, Jason Derulo, Jack Grealish and Conor McGregor have been photographed at the San Antonio venue. One woman was thrilled after meeting who she believed was Wayne Lineker, who has remained single for seven years. She became even more excited when he reportedly offered to buy her a drink. The party-goer was holidaying with a friend she's called Faye, and the duo were staying at Ibiza Rocks. One day while at the poolside party hotel, the two women were approached by some "absolute sorts" they nicknamed "Ibiza Final Bosses". The blokes invited them to Ocean Beach for the day, which they accepted. She and her mate headed to the beach club with the group and claims she was "having the time of her life" with them, until something caught her attention. She revealed in a frank TikTok video : "Out the corner of my eye I could see Wayne Lineker. I know exactly who Wayne Lineker is, I know he is into brunettes." She continued: "My mate Faye doesn't know who he is. He approaches and asks 'do you want a drink'. I respond 'I've got my own drinks but sure I'd love you to get me a drink'. So we end up spending time with Wayne Lineker and his companion, let's call him Barry for the story." Lacy explained she and her friend departed from the initial group they'd joined at the beach club, hoping to spend their day with 'Wayne' and his mate. She observed they were having "a great time". The pair were invited to an afterparty at the location where the two men were staying. Lacy revealed: "I'm like absolutely, I'm thinking there's going to a party, this is going to be lit, me and Wayne are going to be a thing, I'm literally going to come back to Torquay engaged. I manifested the whole thing." However, she began feeling doubtful when they climbed into a vehicle to reach the party. "I thought we were going to get into a Range Rover, it wasn't quite that," she revealed. Lacy explained she hadn't realised how intoxicated they were until that point. She described how they exited the car and entered a hotel, despite anticipating a large villa gathering. "It is a disappointment to say the least," she remarked. Please note the follow video contains strong language. She continued: "So we're all sat in this twin room with Wayne, Barry, my mate Faye and me. They're like 'do you want a drink', I'm like 'yeah sure'. Anyway we do the whole formal thing of asking each other's names." Lacy revealed she jokingly asked 'Wayne' what his name was, completely convinced it was him, and was stunned when he replied saying 'Tim'. She explained: "I said you're so funny. He goes, 'what do you mean'. I go 'you're name's not Tim', he goes 'yeah my name's Tim'. So it's at that moment I realise what I've done. This ain't Wayne Lineker." She continued: "I realised I have royally f***ed up. I have brought us to the back end of Ibiza where I have never even visited with this guy Tim - and now come to think of it, he doesn't even look anything like Wayne Lineker. I am that lit, I'm stuck in this crazy hotel room with my mate." She feigned illness so she and her pal could make their getaway. But matters got worse when they couldn't find a taxi for more than an hour. Lacy continued: "I am stuck in a hotel room with f***ing Barry, Wayne, Faye, and me drinking the worst f***ing prosecco while all the Ibiza final bosses are at a party." Wayne Lineker, who also runs Linekers bars and Bam-Bu-Ku, spotted the post and replied in the comments. Wayne quipped: "Who's Barry? Must be Dean Gaffney." Lacy fired back: "No way has Wayne entered the chat. Deffo not as hot as Dean Gaffney, more like Barry from Eastenders. Don't worry Wayne I would recognise you in a crowded room any day of the was an off brand night." The video was a hit with viewers, with one quipping: "What in the Jet 2 Holidays is going on here." Another chimed in with: "Wayne Lineker from Temu,". A third couldn't contain their laughter, commenting: "I am crying," while another person penned: "I have never laughed so much at 7am on a Sunday morning." Another fan added: "Haha brilliant. Knew that was coming. Sounds like something I'd do. At least you have a great story to tell." One viewer shared a personal anecdote, stating: "Wayne Lineker tried chatting me up in his bar in Tenerife 35 years ago! He's spent his life trying to pull women. I think you can do better."

Love Island's Faye Winter lashes out at 'vile' ITV viewers over criticism
Faye Winter has taken to social media, furiously hitting out at those who have criticised the cast of this year's Love Island, branding the social media trolls 'vile' A star who became the most complained about Love Island contestant has hit out at 'vile' trolls. Faye Winter, who found fame on the 2021 series of the ITV dating programme, has never shied away from talking about her experience on the show and how she turned things around after becoming the most complained about contestant. But just days after the show came to an end on Monday, which saw Toni Laites and Cach Mercer crowned by host Maya Jama, winning an impressive £50,000 between them, Faye, 30, was quick to speak out on social media about the trolling that some of the Islanders have been receiving. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025. Taking to Instagram in view of her 1.1 million followers, Faye said: " Love Island is over. The comments I'm seeing are vile. Let's get something straight: These islanders don't know you, and you don't know them. Before you post that nasty comment, ask yourself, will it actually make your life any better? You tuned in. You watched the drama unfold. You got exactly what you begged for, for years people have been saying it boring. "But with drama comes real people, real feelings, and real consequences. The show's over. The performing monkeys you were entertained by are out of the circus now. Let them rest. Let them decompress. Let them process the experience and do their eight sessions of therapy with someone who's actually qualified. "They don't need Agatha from Accounts dishing out unsolicited opinions. If you liked them, support them. If you didn't? Move on with your life. The cast, regardless, gave you the entertainment you begged for. Now give them what they deserve, a break." Faye later went on to share a screenshot taken from AI software ChatGPT, showing the denotation of the word 'show'. It said: "A performance or production created to entertain an audience. It can take many forms, including television programs, stage plays, concerts, reality TV, or online content. A show typically involves scripted or unscripted elements designed to evoke emotion, tell a story, or spark engagement." This year's series of the programme has since become the most complained about series since the show launched in 2015. One scene, in particular, attracted over 9,000 complaints to broadcasting watchdog, Ofcom. Islanders had been accused of bullying Shakira, leading to 9,339 people lodging official complaints. Across four episodes in July, a staggering 9,339 complaints were made about the show, with the majority relating to "alleged bullying behaviour towards Shakira". These included 2,272 complaints made on July 22, around 1,716 complaints made on July 23 and 958 complaints made on July 25 following the aftermath of the Grafties. Meanwhile, a press officer for Ofcom told the Mirror that a further 56 complaints were received over "alleged bullying involving Toni and Shakira towards Emily". Ofcom also received over 1,000 complaints about "misogynistic" behaviour last month. In the regulator's weekly audience report, figures confirmed that more than half of the complaints were made about the show on July 18, which saw Harrison Solomon, 22, and Lauren Wood, 26, leave the Spanish villa together. On 20 July, Ofcom said the "majority of complaints related to alleged misogynistic behaviour by Dejon". Meanwhile, earlier in the week on 15 July, 107 complaints related to "alleged misogynistic behaviour by Harrison". In recent years, ITV has introduced extensive duty of care protocols for the Islanders, including training and information prior to entering the villa, and support once they head home.

The Devon lass, who recently broke down in tears as she re-lived her explosive 2021 show stint and her furious rages at all of the lads, took to her Instagram Stories to make her point. She posted an image taken from a plane showing a tranquil countryside scene and wrote: "Love Island is over. "The comments I'm seeing are vile. "Let's get something straight, these Islanders don't know you, and you don't know them. "Before you post that nasty comment ask yourself will it actually make your life any better? "You tuned in. Faye Winter opens up about surgery reversal after Love Island She added: "Let them rest, let them decompress. "Let them process the experience and do their eight seasons of therapy with someone whose actually qualified. "They don't need Agatha from accounts dishing out unsolicited opinions. "If you liked them, support them. If you didn't move on with your life." The show star then wrapped her emotional post with the words: "The cast regardless gave you the entertainment you'd begged for. "Now give them what they deserve, a break." VILLA DRAMA Four years ago, Faye was at the heart of the villa drama as her relationship with Teddy Soares hit the rocks. Senior financial consultant Teddy broke down in tears as his relationship with the feisty estate agent ended, with his emotional turmoil leaving fans begging for bosses to step in. The argument saw 25,000 people complain to Ofcom, however the watchdog later threw the case out. Meanwhile, his loved ones watching at home then called for Faye's removal from the Mallorca villa. Teddy's cousin Tania Monteiro who lives in Portugal, frankly told the Sunday People: "I don't have words for what she has done." Since the scenes were aired, Faye has sadly received death threats from sick viewers. Upset viewers then vowed to vote Faye off the show and complain to Ofcom after she "screamed for an hour". OPEN UP Faye has candidly revealed the toll her mental health took after leaving the villa. In a recent chat on Paul C. Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast, she said: "I remember feeling so lost, I remember feeling like what am I meant to do now? "I remember feeling I don't want to be here." Wiping away tears from her face, Faye went on and said: "I felt like all the pillars in my life were crumbling, and I didn't want to be here anymore." Asked by host Paul what she meant by that, Faye said: "I just knew in my heart of heart that it would be easier if I wasn't here. "But I just remember feeling I don't want to be in this house, I don't want to be around these people, I don't want to be doing this job, I feel worthless and I'm alone again." This isn't the first time that Faye has bravely opened up about how the backlash from Love Island has affected her. Speaking exclusively to Fabulous for Shamed, a YouTube series which explored the effect of trolling on women, the reality star told us: 'At one point, when I came out of Love Island, I thought I was the worst person in the world." 6 Faye has urged show fans to 'let the Islanders rest' Credit: Instagram/@faye__winter 6 She clapped back at online bullies and urged them to 'move on' Credit: Instagram
