Creative industry can boost M'sia-Indonesia ties, says ambassador
JAKARTA : Malaysia's creative industry, particularly in film and drama, has the potential to become a new bridge for strengthening cultural ties with Indonesia, according to Malaysia's ambassador to Indonesia, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin.
Speaking during a courtesy call by Malaysian director Erma Fatima, whose real name is Fatimah Rahmad, and her delegation, he said the power of storytelling and the shared cultural values between the countries could help deepen bilateral relations.
'Once upon a time, Malaysia and Indonesia had a cultural exchange programme known as Titian Muhibah, organised by Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Televisi Republik Indonesia, and Radio Republik Indonesia,' he said.
Syed Mohamad Hasrin said the programme had served as a platform for introducing arts and culture, and strengthening bilateral relations.
'It is time to revive the era of closeness between Malaysia and Indonesia. Through various creative initiatives, we can build new bridges that further strengthen the sense of kinship and the Nusantara spirit,' he said.
The most successful local production to penetrate the Indonesian market so far is the animated series Upin & Ipin, which has captured the hearts of young viewers and become a cultural icon representing Malaysia across Indonesia.
'The success of Upin & Ipin proves that high-quality content that resonates with regional values has great potential for international acceptance,' Syed Mohamad Hasrin said.
Malaysia can also take pride in its latest television series Bidaah, produced by Erma's Rumah Karya Citra, which has the potential to be another important platform for enhancing cultural ties with Indonesia.
'We hope that local works highlighting shared values will form the foundation for strong Malaysia–Indonesia relations and renew the spirit of cultural cooperation in this modern era,' Syed Mohamad Hasrin said.
Since its premiere last month, Bidaah has become the most-watched drama on Viu, an online streaming platform, garnering over 2.5 billion views across digital platforms and social media in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Beloved Chinese climber killed by falling rocks on K2
A CHINESE climber renowned among her peers for her warmth and friendliness, as well as her handstand antics on a recent expedition, has died, Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported. Guan Jing, 38, from Hunan province was struck by falling rocks while descending K2, the second highest mountain in the world, in the Pakistan-China region on Tuesday. FINAS, EPF, PERKESO Strengthen Social Protections For Local Artistes
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) is strengthening social protection for Malaysian artistes through a collaboration with the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) with support from the Federation of Malaysian Film Associations (GAFEMA). Its chief executive officer, Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said the collaboration would allow artistes to sign up for PERKESO's Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) and EPF's voluntary i-Saraan scheme as their long-term investment and their welfare, adding that 200 veteran artistes have been approved to receive benefits under the PERKESO SKSPS scheme. 'FINAS has also sponsored the opening of 1,000 i-Saraan accounts. This quota is open till September 2025 with priority for artistes who have never registered,' he said when met after presenting PERKESO contributor certificates and EPF member certificates to local artistes here today.

(Video) Local VFX Artist Sofian Collabs With SEVENTEEN's Jun For 'The Shadow's Edge' Promo
Earlier this month, local visual effects artist Sofian, better known online as Sofyank96, teased his collaboration with K-pop idol Jun (文俊輝/준), a member of SEVENTEEN (세븐틴). In partnership with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC), the video project forms part of the promotional campaign for the actor's upcoming action–thriller film 'The Shadow's Edge', starring Jackie Chan. Malaysian fans were thrilled by the announcement and have been eagerly awaiting the content creator's latest work. The wait is finally over as the video is now out for the world to see. Watch: Earlier today (Friday, 15th August), Sofian and GSC released the collaboration between the Malaysian influencer and Jun, who plays Hu Feng in 'The Shadow's Edge'. The video opens with the pair seated in a lounge area, where the K-pop idol, in full costume, pulls out a lollipop before Sofian offers to show him a magic trick. The influencer tosses the sweet into the air, where it transforms into a Rubik's Cube, much to the singer's amusement. The singer then takes the 3D combination puzzle from Sofian, insisting he can solve it. However, just as he completes the task, the cube begins to beep and flash with lights like a ticking time bomb. The cube is dropped to the floor before it 'explodes', multiplying into hundreds of identical Rubik's Cubes. The words 'The Shadow's Edge' then appears on the puzzle, inviting fans to watch the film. 'It was such a fun experience shooting a VFX video with Jun, he's full of energy! If you want to see more magic tricks and action, see it in 'The Shadow's Edge'!' Sofian wrote in his captions. SEVENTEEN fans were delighted to finally see the promotional video, with many thanking Sofian for collaborating with Jun. Others remarked on how adorable the singer was when he said 'Jom!' at the end of the clip. Influencer Ceddy Ang even suggested that Sofian should make cameo appearances in future films. We have to agree with Ceddy on this one.
