Google Quietly Rolls Out Key Updates to Wallet, Play Store, Wear OS, and Google TV

While AI took centre stage at this year's Google I/O keynote, several important product updates slipped under the radar during developer sessions. From upgrades to Google Wallet and Wear OS to changes in the Play Store and Google TV, Google has quietly introduced meaningful enhancements that users will begin to notice soon. Live Updates Coming to Wear OS One notable feature involves Live Updates expanding to smartwatches. Already anticipated on Android 16 smartphones, this functionality will soon be available on wearables. In a developer session spotted by Android Authority, Google's Aaron Labiaga shared that the feature will reach smartwatches "later in 2026." Live Updates will allow users to view real-time status updates from delivery, rideshare, and navigation apps directly on their wrists, mirroring Apple's Live Activities for watchOS. Smarter Google Wallet Notifications and Expanded ID Support Google Wallet is also getting a significant intelligence boost. A new feature called 'Nearby Passes notification' will prompt users to open their digital pass when they arrive at locations where it may be needed, like an airport, gym, or café. According to Google, 'This notification serves as a direct gateway, allowing users to seamlessly access the associated pass with a single tap.' Additionally, Wallet's digital ID support is expanding. Users in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia can now store digital IDs, while support for UK passports is also being introduced. Another helpful improvement: airlines offering loyalty programs can now automatically send boarding passes to Wallet upon check-in. Google Play Store Gets More Social and Safer The Google Play Store is receiving its own set of enhancements, including a new option that lets users ask someone else to pay for an app or purchase. Initially rolled out in India, this feature will now be available in the US, Japan, Indonesia, and Mexico. It enables users to send a payment link outside of their Google Family group to request purchases. Google is also refining the subscription model by allowing users to buy add-ons alongside base subscriptions in a single transaction. On the development side, the Play Store will now let developers halt buggy releases in real-time, preventing flawed versions from being delivered to new users. To improve app discovery and engagement, developers can now enhance their listings with a content carousel, YouTube playlists, and audio samples for health and wellness apps. Google is also launching new topic pages to help users explore curated content across shows, movies, and sports. Google TV Gets Android 16 and New Audio Enhancements Google TV is set to benefit from Android 16, introducing visual updates through Material 3's Expressive design language. It's also gaining support for MediaQualityManager, which gives apps more control over picture profile settings. Another notable addition is the Eclipsa Audio codec, a spatial audio format developed in collaboration with Samsung. This is expected to improve the overall sound experience across compatible content on Google TV. As flashy AI demos dominated the spotlight, Google I/O's quieter announcements still promise real-world usability and quality-of-life improvements across a wide range of devices.

Google I/O 2025 was all about AI, here are top 5 announcements that stole the show

In 2023, Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella famously quipped that he wanted to make Google dance. The context being that - he believed - Redmond had got way ahead in artificial intelligence (more specifically generative AI) and so, it was ready to take on Google's long-standing dominance in the search market. He hoped that better competition would push Google to innovate more relentlessly and come out with even better May 20, 2025, Google hit back with not one, not two, but a packed slate of AI product announcements including new business models to - eventuality- make money off some of its modern breakthrough inventions. Also, breaking from convention, Google is planning to widely release most of this capability in a bid to make it accessible to many more people than before. It was a different I/O, one where Google spoke less of Android and Google TV, and more about how Gemini will drive experiences on devices in the days and years to is not easy to filter out the best given the length and scope of every announcement that Google dropped at I/O 2025, but we'll give it a go anyway: condense the barrage of information to give you our take on what really stole the further ado, here are five of the biggest headline-grabbers from Google I/O 2025:advertisement Gemini 2.5 with Deep Think mode: Gemini 2.5 Pro, which is the latest and most powerful version of Google's large language models, is getting advanced reasoning capabilities in the form of a new mode called Deep Think. Essentially, it would allow Google to dedicate more computational resources to the LLM and answer more complex queries like mathematical and coding challenges in a more insightful and comprehensive way. It will make AI so smart it will be able to explore multiple hypotheses before arriving at a solution. In other words, it is getting a brain to think and reason like mode in Google Search: You can think of AI mode as the next stage or evolution of Google Search where using Gemini, Google will let you ask longer, more complex questions and receive AI-powered summaries and insights directly within the Search results. The idea, Google says, is to change how we seek information online at the most fundamental level, moving away from keyword-based queries to interactions that are more natural, sort of like how you would ask another human XR and Android XR Glasses: Google is taking another swing at smart glasses. After the failure of Google Glass, the company is once again dipping its toes into the platform with a brand-new operating system called Android XR, which will drive both wearable devices like Samsung's Project Moohan and smart glasses that will be made in partnership with third-party eyewear brands like eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. The idea is to put Gemini on your face and let it give you useful information such as what's in front of you or at the most basic level, read your 3 and Imagen 4 with Flow: Google has released significant upgrades to its generative media models. While Imagen 4 promises better texture and text generation for images, with Veo 3, you can generate video and audio together. "Flow" is a new AI filmmaking tool released simultaneously that combines these capabilities, offering features like character and scene consistency and the ability to extend scenes, giving creators both power and flexibility to make great content with AI. Some say, it's the end of Hollywood as we know it. Conversely, it is being seen as a big boon for game Astra integration with Gemini Live: Google's vision for Gemini extends beyond being a chatbot. It wants it to become a 'world model' that can plan, imagine new experiences, and simulate aspects of the world. To do that, it is integrating live capabilities from its research prototype Project Astra into the Gemini app to provide real-time visual assistance using the phone's camera. The system has also been enhanced to detect emotions in a user's voice and respond intelligently while ignoring background conversations.
