Lucid cuts annual production forecast as global trade tensions sting

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Lucid (LCID.O), opens new tab lowered its annual production forecast and missed Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue on Tuesday, at a time when U.S. trade tensions have cast a dark cloud over some automakers as consumers rein in big spending budgets.
Shares of the company dropped over 10% in extended trading.
Despite seeing a rise in deliveries for its luxury electric vehicles, Lucid is navigating an uncertain time for the industry as U.S. import tariffs threaten to upend supply chains and raise the costs of vehicles by thousands of dollars.
The company has been aggressively striking deals with North American companies in order to domestically source critical minerals used in EV manufacturing amid a push by the Trump administration to reshore production and strengthen American manufacturing.
Lucid's fortunes rely heavily on the success of its newly launched Gravity SUV and the upcoming mid-size car, which targets a $50,000 price point, as the company looks to expand its consumer base.
Competition in the U.S. EV market is also stiff, with industry giant Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab pushing sales of its revamped Model Y, and Rivian (RIVN.O), opens new tab marketing its refreshed versions of the R1T truck and R1S SUV.
Lucid now expects to make between 18,000 and 20,000 vehicles this year, compared to its previous forecast of 20,000 vehicles.
In order to diversify revenue streams, Lucid signed a deal with Uber (UBER.N), opens new tab last month, whereby over six years, starting in 2026, the ride-hailing platform will acquire and deploy over 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs that will be equipped with autonomous vehicle technology from startup Nuro.
As part of the deal, Uber will invest $300 million in Lucid as the firms look to establish a foothold in the robotaxi market.
Lucid reported revenue of $259.4 million in the second quarter, missing estimates of $279.9 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.
On an adjusted basis, the company lost 24 cents per share, compared with estimates of a loss of 21 cents per share.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on computer chips, raising the specter of higher prices for electronics, autos, household appliances and other essential products dependent on the processors powering the digital age. 'We'll be putting a tariff of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors,' Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook. "But if you're building in the United States of America, there's no charge." The announcement came more than three months after Trump temporarily exempted most electronics from his administration's most onerous tariffs. The Republican president said companies that make computer chips in the U.S. would be spared the import tax. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of computer chips increased the price of autos and contributed to higher inflation. Investors seemed to interpret the potential tariff exemptions as a positive for Apple and other major tech companies that have been making huge financial commitments to manufacture more chips and other components in the U.S.. Big Tech already has made collective commitments to invest about $1.5 trillion in the U.S. since Trump moved back into the White House in January. That figure includes a $600 billion promise from Apple after the iPhone maker boosted its commitment by tacking another $100 billion on to a previous commitment made in February. Now the question is whether the deal brokered between Cook and Trump will be enough to insulate the millions of iPhones made in China and India from the tariffs that the administration has already imposed and reduce the pressure on the company to raise prices on the new models expected to be unveiled next month. Wall Street certainly seems to think so. After Apple's stock price gained 5% in Wednesday regular trading sessions, the shares rose by another 3% in extended trading after Trump announced some tech companies won't be hit with the latest tariffs while Cook stood alongside him. The shares of AI chipmaker Nvidia, which also has recently made big commitments to the U.S., rose slightly in extended trading to add to the $1 trillion gain in market value the Silicon Valley company has made since the start of Trump's second administration. The stock price of computer chip pioneer Intel, which has fallen on hard times, also climbed in extended trading. Inquiries sent to chip makers Nvidia and Intel were not immediately answered. The chip industry's main trade group, the Semiconductor Industry Association, declined to comment on Trump's latest tariffs. Demand for computer chips has been climbing worldwide, with sales increasing 19.6% in the year-ended in June, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization. Trump's tariff threats mark a significant break from existing plans to revive computer chip production in the U.S. that were drawn up during the administration of President Joe Biden. Since taking over from Biden, Trump has been deploying tariffs to incentivize more domestic production. Essentially, the president is betting that the threat of dramatically higher chip costs would force most companies to open factories domestically, despite the risk that tariffs could squeeze corporate profits and push up prices for mobile phones, TVs and refrigerators. By contrast, the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act that Biden signed into law in 2022 provided more than $50 billion to support new computer chip plants, fund research and train workers for the industry. Whether it be the judicial system, universities, or health organisations, Donald Trump cannot abide by anything that does not confirm his world view. So it was not a shock when late last week he came for statistics – or, more pointedly, the person in charge of the economic statistics. On Friday, the US's Bureau of Labor Studies released the July US employment figures. They were not good. Just 73,000 non-farm jobs were added and annual employment growth was the worst it has been since the GFC years (excluding the pandemic): If the graph does not display click here In response, Trump did what any autocrat would do when told bad news: he shot the messenger – at least only figuratively. Trump argued that Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of labor statistics, had faked bad figures purely to hurt him. And so he fired her. But this should not be dismissed as 'oh that's just Trump', nor should we just sigh and say we have been in a fact-free era for nearly a decade. Reality might be hanging on to the political debate for dear life, but this move threatens to fling it off the cliff. The BLS data is vital for understanding not just what is going on in the USA but to guide other nations – like here in Australia. For example, Australia is doing very well compared with the US. Unlike the US, our employment rate is higher now than it was before the pandemic: If the graph does not display click here These comparisons can influence future policies. For example, we did very well during the GFC; the US did not. We also did much better during the pandemic than the US. They also give insight into the future. The US is still the world's biggest economy and – as we have seen with inflation – what happens there, often happens here, in Australia: If the graph does not display click here If Trump doesn't like weak employment growth numbers, you think he'll be happy with inflation data that shows his tariffs are causing higher prices? And this is not just some academic exercise. US welfare payments are indexed to inflation, so the official data vitally affects the livelihood of many people. Trump thinks when he closes his eyes the rest of the world disappears. But not measuring inflation or unemployment or global temperatures doesn't disappear the problems. And loss of trust in official data will affect business investment decisions, borrowing costs and – as with all attacks on institutions – faith in democracy. For example, in Australia, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that in the past year the cost of living for all households except 'self-funded' retirees rose faster than did inflation: If the graph does not display click here This is not the greatest news for the Australian government – no politician likes data that says things might be worse than what they previously argued. Cost of living, unlike inflation, includes mortgage repayments. Despite falling interest rates, repaying a mortgage is still around 4.4% higher than it was a year ago, and since March 2022 mortgage repayments have accounted for nearly half of the increase in cost of living: If the graph does not display click here Does it help the Australian government for the ABS to reveal this? Not really. It could blame our Reserve Bank, but generally governments are blamed for high interest rates. It certainly doesn't help the government for the ABS to release figures that some journalist like me can use to show that the value of wages are 8.6% lower than they were in March 2021 when you use cost of living rather than CPI: If the graph does not display click here That type of information makes life hard for the government – but so it should! In a democracy you have to face your critics, argue your case and convince voters you have the best plans and way forward. Political parties are already working hard to make you question reality. But at least till now, even in the US, where Trump would like there to be a new kind of maths where prices can fall by more than 100% (1,000%, 1,100, 1,200, 1,300!!), reality has been counted and presented. The end of impartial economic data would not just be another case of Trump 'flooding the zone'. It would be a fundamental attack on democracy, designed to ensure those who are suffering from his polices are not able to demonstrate that things are worse – either for them or for the nation. They are the actions usually associated with authoritarian regimes, and we should not shy away from making that clear. TOKYO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa requested that the U.S. swiftly implement measures agreed upon in a bilateral trade deal, including lowering automobile and auto parts tariffs, Japan's government said on Thursday. The request was made during Akazawa's 90-minute meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington on Wednesday, Japan's government said in a statement. The statement also said Akazawa sought confirmation and "immediate execution" of the two countries' agreement on U.S. levies for other goods imported from Japan. The U.S. last month agreed in a trade deal to lower existing tariffs on Japanese car imports to 15% from levies totalling 27.5% previously, but a timeframe for the change to go into effect was not announced. Duties on other Japanese goods would be cut to 15% from 25% from Thursday, according to the agreement. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Akazawa said Japan wants to make sure goods such as Japanese beef that the U.S. already levies at more than 15% would be exempt from the additional 15% rate. Japan argues the two countries had agreed its goods imported to the U.S. would be exempt from such "stacking," where they can be affected by multiple tariffs. But a Federal Register attached to President Donald Trump's July 31 executive order that addressed tariff rates for many trading partners showed a "no stacking" condition applies to the European Union, but no such clarification was issued for Japan. Given such discrepancies, Akazawa and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have been under attack in parliament and domestic media for not crafting a written joint statement stipulating details of the trade deal with the U.S.
