Elon Musk becomes Kekius Maximus (again!); sparks crypto surge

Economic Times17-05-2025
Billionaire Elon Musk has once again changed his display name—this time reverting to Kekius Maximus. Accompanying the update is a new profile picture, depicting Musk clad in armour with the title "Emperor Kekius Maximus" written on it.
Musk briefly adopted the same name in December, likely drawing inspiration from the memecoin Kekius Maximus. And just like the last time, the name change has coincided with a sharp surge in the coin's value—rising by 142% as of 11:30 am on May 17, according to The Crypto Times.
Back in December, the coin experienced an even more dramatic rally, spiking 497.56% within 24 hours.
Who is Kekius Maximus? The character of Kekius Maximus blends the meme icon Pepe the Frog with Russell Crowe's heroic character Maximus, from the film Gladiator.
The name also seems to be in reference to a meme-based cryptocurrency token called KEKIUS. Rooted in internet culture and heavily influenced by the 'Pepe' meme, KEKIUS has been gaining traction in the crypto market, as reported by The Times of India.
After changing the name, Musk reposted a user's comment on X: 'Legacy Media trying to find Elon Musk on 𝕏, and suddenly he comes out like: 'My name is Kekius Maximus Reevius Memius, the Dogefather, and Commander of 𝕏 shitposters. Kekius Maximus is back!'"This update comes less than two weeks after Musk briefly changed his name to 'Gorklon Rust', possibly a reference to Grok—the chatbot developed by his AI company xAI—and Rust, a programming language reportedly integral to xAI's backend. His profile picture at the time also changed to what appeared to be a distorted version of the Grok logo.
The name Gorklon Rust may also have been a nod to the memecoin GORK on the Solana blockchain, which, like Kekius Maximus, saw a price spike—jumping nearly 100% in 24 hours, as reported by Outlook Business.

US labor, advocacy groups urge states to reject Tesla's $29 billion Musk pay

Synopsis U.S. labor unions and progressive groups are pressuring state financial officers to oppose Elon Musk's new pay awards, arguing the excessive cost jeopardizes workers' retirement savings. They urge officials to push asset managers to reject the pay plans and demand stronger board independence at Tesla. Agencies Tesla CEO Elon Musk A coalition of U.S. labor unions and progressive advocacy groups urged state financial officers overseeing public pension funds to oppose fresh pay awards for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, warning the excessive cost poses risks to workers' retirement savings. A mix of labor unions and liberal advocacy groups, including the American Federation of Teachers and MoveOn, urged state officials to press asset managers to reject Musk's new pay plans and push for stronger board independence at the EV maker, in a letter exclusively shared with Reuters. Many states manage pension funds for teachers and other employees, which are among the largest U.S. investors. Tesla and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The appeal comes amid a legal saga over Musk's record pay package. In January last year, Delaware Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick voided Musk's 2018 package, then valued at about $56 billion, calling it an "unfathomable" award by a conflicted board. Tesla this month granted Musk 96 million new shares valued at about $29 billion as a good-faith interim payment while his 2018 pay package remains under appeal. The Tesla board said to shareholders that retaining Musk is essential, as his leadership is critical for the company's transition from an EV maker to a robotics and AI-focused firm. In June last year, Tesla shareholders ratified the payout and approved relocating the company's legal home to Texas, but the court case remained unresolved, with McCormick later allowing for appeals that could extend for months. The groups urged officials to oppose any new pay package and to vote against directors who fail to show independence from Musk. "Shareholders in Tesla shouldn't be taking dilutions so that the wealthiest man in the world can be handed additional Tesla shares," some of the advocates said via email. Tesla has not yet published a proxy outlining the ballot items at the next annual meeting, but the groups expect the issue to be included.

Elon Musk Must Face Lawsuit Claiming He Ran Illegal $1 Million Election Lottery: Court

Elon Musk was ordered on Wednesday by a federal judge to face a lawsuit by voters accusing the world's richest person of defrauding them into signing a petition to support the U.S. Constitution for a chance to win his $1 million-a-day giveaway. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman in Austin, Texas said Jacqueline McAferty plausibly alleged in her proposed class action that Musk and his political action committee America PAC wrongly induced her to provide personal identifying information as part of the giveaway, late in the 2024 election campaign. Lawyers for Musk and America PAC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk founded America PAC to support Republican Donald Trump's successful 2024 presidential run. McAferty, an Arizona resident, said Musk and America PAC induced voters in seven battleground states to sign his petition by promising that $1 million recipients would be chosen randomly, as in a lottery, though the voters had no real chance to collect. She said voters who signed were also required to provide names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. In seeking a dismissal, Musk listed several "red flags" as proof he had not run an illegal lottery. He said these included statements that the $1 million recipients were "selected to earn" the money and expected to become America PAC spokespeople, defeating the idea that the payment was a "prize." But the judge cited other statements suggesting the defendants were "awarding" the $1 million, and the money could be "won." "It is plausible that plaintiff justifiably relied on those statements to believe that defendants were objectively offering her the chance to enter a random lottery--even if that is not what they subjectively intended to do," Pitman wrote. The judge was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama in 2014. Musk had also rejected the suggestion that petition signers suffered harm by providing contact information. Pitman said an expert in political data brokerage could testify what that information was worth for voters in battleground states. The lawsuit was filed on Election Day, Nov. 5, 2024. A day earlier, a Philadelphia judge refused to end Musk's giveaway, saying that city's top prosecutor failed to show it was an illegal lottery. Musk is a Texas resident, and his electric car company Tesla is based in Austin. The case is McAferty v Musk et al, U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas, No. 24-01346.
