Red Sternberg passed away due to a heart attack. He was 50 years old.
This was confirmed by his wife, Sandy Sternberg, to "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," as announced by Abunda on Friday.
"Pumanaw po si Red noong May 27 sa America kung saan siya nanirahan mula 2007. Tatlong araw lang ito bago ang kaniyang kaarawan. He is survived by his wife Sandy at tatlo nilang anak. Kinumpirma sa amin ni Sandy na heart attack ang cause of death ni Red. Natagpuan niya si Red na nakahandusay sa sahig noong tumawag siya ng 911," said Abunda.
The "T.G.I.S." star's death was announced by Sandy on Facebook on his birthday on May 30.
His "T.G.I.S." co-stars Angelu de Leon, Bobby Andrews, and Michael Flores guested in Friday's "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" where the King of Talk read them a letter that Sandy wrote for Red's fans and "T.G.I.S." barkada.
"To all the Red Sternberg fans and followers of 'T.G.I,S.' the outpouring of pictures and videos you shared were so touching. I feel your heartache and pain so much. It hurts. It's like a wound that will never ever heal, the deep pounding of your heart that skips a beat, and the reality we all can't accept is inescapable," read Abunda.
In the letter, Sandy looked back on the time she and Red got married 20 years ago, with wedding bands bought from Ongpin. She also remembered him as a simple man and a loving husband and father.
"As a husband, Red was a planner, he was always ahead before I could even think it. He had a solution for everything by looking up in the ceiling as if the answers were all there," the letter read.
"He was a computer geek. Everything had a spreadsheet. Red was a loving daddy to the girls and dada to our son. Our son being so young, he will only remember him through all of your posts. So thank you for keeping his memory alive. "
Sandy also addressed Red's "T.G.I.S." co-stars in the letter.
Abunda read, "To his 'T.G.I.S.' barkada, he's had so many stories he shared with me. Mostly bloopers na parang yesterday lang talaga happened. Thank you for letting him be a part of your barkada. Someday, I hope you can tell the kids more stories."
Red is survived by his wife Sandy and their three children.
On social media, Red's co-stars posted tributes for him in the wake of his passing last month.
On Instagram, Bobby shared old photos of himself with Red, who he called "one of my closest friends in showbiz."
"He was the kind of person who could thrive anywhere, adapt to anything, and still stay true to himself. Generous, loyal, and real," Bobby said.
"T.G.I.S." director Mark Reyes also dedicated a post for Red, saying their entire barkada "is heart broken to lose one of our own."
"Kiko we love you and we're giving you a group hug right now," Direk Mark had said.
"T.G.I.S." was a popular youth-oriented afternoon weekly show that ran on GMA Network. It starred Red, Angelu, Bobby, Michael, Ciara Sotto, Rica Peralejo, Raven Villanueva, Onemig Bondoc, and more.
It premiered in August 1995 and had over 200 episodes, plus a spin-off film "T.G.I.S.: The Movie" that premiered in 1997. The show will mark its 30th anniversary this year.

Michael Flores says Red Sternberg was set to return to PH for 'T.G.I.S.' reunion project

Red Sternberg was planning to return to the Philippines for a highly anticipated 'T.G.I.S.' reunion project, his co-stars revealed. In Friday's "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,' Michael Flores, Bobby Andrews, and Angelu de Leon honored and remembered the late actor. 'Plano niyang bumalik dito. Plano nga niyang mag-artista ulit eh. Gusto nga niyang mag-artista daw ulit eh,' Michael said. According to Michael, Red even sought advice from him and Bobby on who to approach regarding management for his return to acting. ''Pag naging OK baka mag-stay muna sila dito for a while kung OK 'yung magiging outcome. And then, 'yun nga, mag-ce-celebrate pa kami ng 30 years namin. Anniversary ng 'T.G.I.S.' So talagang sobrang excited siya to the point na nag-workout siya, nag-diet siya,' Michael said. He also revealed that a 'T.G.I.S.' reunion project had already been planned. 'Kaya masakit nga eh. Kasi nga 'yung pag-uwi niya rito, meron talaga kaming pinaplanong reunion project. Hindi pa namin puwedeng sabihin in details pero meron na talaga. Kasi matagal na 'yan eh,' Michael said, acknowledging their fans' constant requests. Bobby added, 'Ayos na lahat ng logistics, lahat ng ano, everything. And that was the reason why he was so excited to come home.' When asked what they realized following Red's passing, Angelu said that 'time is fleeting. And you really don't know what will happen tomorrow.' For Bobby, Red's passing is a 'wake up call,' noting that they're not that young anymore, so they must value the time they have left. Michael remembered that life is indeed not short and nothing is permanent. 'Sabi nga nila, 'di ba, hiram lang naman 'tong buhay natin eh,' he said. Michelle Gumabao says she doesn't know brother Marco's current relationship status with Cristine Reyes

Michelle Gumabao is not aware of the real score between her brother, Marco Gumabao, and Cristine Reyes. In Wednesday's 'Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,' Michelle talked about her sibling dynamics with Marco, calling him very independent despite being the younger one. Michelle said that Marco has not sought her advice or gone to her regarding his current relationship with Cristine. 'And I don't actually know where they are now in their relationship. I just know that nakausap ko pa rin siya last week, and I got to see her din, especially when her dad passed away. So, she has a good relationship with our family. So, at least whatever is happening between them, hindi naman na-affect 'yung mga tao sa paligid like us,' Michelle said. When asked if it was confirmed that Marco and Cristine are no longer together, Michelle said, 'I haven't seen him, so I haven't asked him.' Michelle said that she had also seen the rumors about their breakup on social media. 'But I don't know if they get to talk again now. So siguro something to ask him when I see him,' she said. Cristine and Marco went Instagram official with their relationship in April 2023 and talked more about their relationship in a vlog with Bea Alonzo. They have a five-year age gap, with Cristine being the older one. —Carby Rose Basina/CDC, GMA Integrated News
