Greggs set to increase prices for a second time this year

Greggs are upping the prices of some of the nation's most loved sweet treats in a move branded a 'theft tax'.
The move comes just five months after the bakery chain increased the price of its most popular menu item by 5p, to £1.30. The increase in the cost of a sausage roll in January was the second time in six months that Greggs has upped the price after it rose from £1.25 from £1.20 last year.
Greggs charged just 85p for its sausage roll in 2016 but since then, the price has gone up seven times. In January Greggs warned it's price hike was due to the planned rise in employer National Insurance contributions and the minimum wage, set to take effect in April. The bakery chain said 'employment costs will result in further overall cost inflation, although wage increases should provide support to consumers'.
The latest set of hikes are set to kick in on Thursday and will see some items, thought to include cookies and doughnuts, go up 5p. Sources said the chain's sausage rolls will remain at £1.30 and other bakes will also be unaffected.
According to The Sun these latest price hikes are down to an increase in thefts, with the outlet reporting that at one Greggs in London, thieves struck every hour. One Greggs staff member told The Sun: 'The amount of people who steal from the stores costs us thousands a week — so it wouldn't surprise me if part of the price rises is because of that. It's not the company's fault, it's just the way things are now. Plenty of other places have had to put up prices as well.'
Former Met Police DCI David McKelvey, who prosecutes shop thieves on behalf of High Street stores, added: 'We're seeing people steal from Greggs every single day. They are being targeted because thieves are able to just walk in and walk out and nothing is done.' Mr McKelvey, founder of security firm TM Eye, added: 'It goes back to this issue of there being no enforcement. The criminals think they can do whatever they like.'
Greggs have confirmed prices are going up but they haven't linked it to thefts. A spokesperson told The Sun: 'We have had to make small changes to the prices of some of our products due to rising costs. We continue to offer our customers great value, high-quality products across the entire range, maintaining our value-leading position in the food-to-go market.'
For those who want to enjoy Greggs goods at a chaper price Greggs is set to open seven new discount outlet stores this year. Greggs Outlet sells surplus food including sausage rolls and bakes at super cheap prices.
You can typically find discounts of up to 75% off - so for example, a four-pack of sausage rolls costs £1.85 in Greggs Outlet, which is 46p a sausage roll. You would normally pay around £4.35 for a four-pack of sausage rolls in a regular Greggs store. Greggs has 38 outlet stores. The sausage roll chain originally wanted to increase this number to 50 in 2025, but it is now aiming for 45 stores.
Greggs has not revealed the locations for its new Greggs Outlet stores.

The family, believed to be from Eritrea, finally recovered enough to declare they would try again to clamber on to the estimated £1,200-a-spot 'taxi' to Britain. Just feet away were the cops, watching with binoculars. They wore riot helmets and some carried shields and pepper spray. Asked why they would not intervene when it was clearly so perilous, one officer simply told The Sun: 'It's difficult.' The boat had been launched just before 5am further up the coast, and arrived to pick up the migrants. A waiting crowd then ran out from the sand dunes. French law enforcement have long said it is too risky to act once the boat is in the water — meaning the officers merely watched as the danger unfolded before missing the chance to arrest one of the smugglers. The Sun saw the boat turn up. First a large group of men scrambled aboard, followed by women and families with children. One man appeared barely able to keep his head above water, as he desperately reached from the sea towards the dinghy. One cop kept an eye on the inflatable dinghy while four others stood chatting behind him. Another began filming the incident on his phone, while a pal inhaled from a vape. At one stage it appeared the boat was overloaded, with its engine either broken or not powerful enough. But it eventually set off, leaving a group of around ten people without a place. It momentarily paused, giving the desperate migrants a glimmer of hope, but by then the water was already too deep. MAKESHIFT CAMP A suspected smuggler who had steered the boat leapt out and made it to shore — leaving the passengers to negotiate the treacherous crossing alone. He took the group who had missed out back to their makeshift camp, but the police had already left the scene. He became aggressive when approached by The Sun. The family who came close to drowning stayed silent when asked how they were and why they were prepared to take young children on the crossing. They also did not respond when asked if they realised how dangerous the crossing was. The two dinghies carried an estimated total of 150 migrants. Photographs from Dover later showed many in life jackets being brought ashore after being intercepted by a UK Border Force patrol. It is unclear if these were the same migrants we saw, or others who set off elsewhere from the France. More than 15,000 people have illegally crossed the Channel this year, figures compiled by the Tories showed. This breaks last year's record of 13,489 arrivals in the first six months. There have also been ten migrant deaths in the Channel this year. Britain is paying France £476million for a deal which is supposed to see border commanders in Calais prevent crossings. But police routinely refuse to do anything once migrants are in the sea. The Sun on Sunday last week told how French police union boss Fabien Vanhemelryck had been branded a hypocrite. 'HYPOCRITE' UNION BOSS It emerged he had called migrants 'scum' and a 'pain' — yet was leading the charge against officers having to intervene. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp MP slammed a 'total loss of border control'. He added: '2025 is the worst year ever for small boat crossings so far. While traffickers and criminal gangs rake in millions, Labour Ministers stand in Westminster rehearsing soundbites.' The Home Office said: 'We have returned nearly 30,000 people with no right to be here and have driven up illegal working arrests by 42 per cent. 'We know more needs to be done with the French to build upon the 10,000 crossing attempts that we have stopped this year, and we are strengthening our cooperation to do this.' They added of the Tory plan to process asylum seekers in a third country: 'The Rwanda plan was not a deterrent. It did not lead to one person being forcibly removed and cost the taxpayer £700million.'

Cadbury fans ‘disgusted' as chocolate pack shrinks
The product in question is the Dairy Milk Little Bars multipacks which are now being sold as packs of four instead of packs of six. A pack of four chocolate bars costs £1.40 on Tesco's website despite a pack of six of the same chocolate bar costing the same price last month, reports The Sun. Cadbury fans 'disgusted' at chocolate bar 'shrinkflation' Taking to the review section on the Tesco website, one customer said: 'Advertised as new, only thing new is you get 4 instead of 6!! For the same price. Disgusting!' Another commented: 'Stop reducing how much is in the packet and charging the same price!!!' A third noticed the difference in pack size: 'Taken 2 bars out. STILL SAME PRICE. Were 6 now 4. Disgraceful.' Someone else shared: 'Was a six pack now a four pack for the same price, a third less chocolate, unacceptable shrinkflation'. The Sun explained that another pack of Cadbury chocolate bars – Freddos – had reduced from five bars to four as well as Cadbury Dairy Milk multipacks which went from nine bars to seven. Lib Dems call for customers to be told about 'shrinkflation' The Liberal Democrats want government legislation amended to legally require large supermarkets to inform shoppers when the quantity of goods within a pre-packaged product has decreased thereby increasing the price per unit of measurement. Discontinued UK sweets/chocolates Details of the changes would need to be attached or placed alongside the product for a 60-day period, according to the amendment tabled to the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill. Supermarkets would be forced to tell their customers if they want them to 'pay more for less' under the proposals designed to tackle 'shrinkflation'. Digestive biscuits, butter, crisps and chocolate bars were among the items found to have decreased in size while their unit cost increased, according to 2024 research by Compare the Market. Cadbury told The Sun: 'We understand the economic pressures that consumers continue to face and any changes to our product sizes is a last resort for our business. Recommended reading: 'However, as a food producer, we are continuing to experience significantly higher input costs across our supply chain, with ingredients such as cocoa and dairy, which are widely used in our products, costing far more than they have done previously. 'Meanwhile, other costs like energy and transport, also remain high. This means that our products continue to be much more expensive to make and while we have absorbed these costs where possible, we still face considerable challenges. 'As a result of this difficult environment, we have had to make the decision to slightly reduce the weight of our Cadbury Dairy Milk Little Bars multipacks so that we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they expect.'
