French fashion retailers see 2.7% revenue drop during summer sales
'Apart from department stores and budget chains, commercial activity has slumped across all retail channels,' said IFM. Of the businesses surveyed by IFM, 57.7% said footfall was down compared to last year's four-week summer sales period.
In H1 2025, items purchased at a discount (end-of-season sales, event sales, promotions, etc.) accounted for a 34% share of the value of all fashion purchases by French consumers.
In the first six months of 2025, the revenue generated by textile and apparel retailers in France was 0.1% down compared to H1 2024. In terms of the IFM forecasts published in February, 'the market has deviated slightly from our relatively optimistic median scenario, which expected a 0.2% increase in apparel and textiles consumption in 2025.'
In H1 2025, the top three apparel retailers in France were second-hand site Vinted followed by budget chain Kiabi and Amazon. Chinese e-tailer Temu made the top 15 for the first time, just behind Zara.

French foreign trade deficit widens before new tariffs take effect
Vulnerable. Extremely vulnerable. Just as the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump come into force, France has found itself in a uniquely weak position in the trade war. That is what the latest foreign trade figures released on Thursday, August 7, by French customs and the Banque de France show. In the first half of the year, the value of imports of goods exceeded exports by €43 billion. After four consecutive quarters of improvement, the trade deficit began to widen again, deteriorating by €4.4 billion – an increase of more than 10% – compared to the second half of 2024. That is not all. The current account balance also raises serious concerns. This broader indicator, which, in addition to goods, includes services and income transfers between France and the rest of the world (such as cross-border salaries and dividends), plunged due to a drop in foreign investment. Slightly positive in 2024, the current account turned sharply negative in the first half of 2025, with a deficit of €17.6 billion. The main reason was income transfers, which recorded their largest deficit in over a decade.

Germany factory output lowest since pandemic in 2020
Factory output in June fell 1.9 percent month-on-month, federal statistics agency Destatis said, steeper than a drop of 0.5 percent forecast by analysts polled by financial data firm FactSet. There were particularly heavy falls in the manufacture of machinery and pharmaceuticals, helping to drag overall factory output down to levels last seen in May 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. Destatis also made a major revision to May industrial production data, saying the indicator fell 0.1 percent. It had previously reported a healthy rise of 1.2 percent. ING bank analyst Carsten Brzeski said the dire data could prompt a downward revision to an initial estimate showing the economy shrank slightly in the second quarter. "This is bad news," he said. "At face value, industry remains stuck in a very long bottoming out." A series of bright data releases since the start of the year had raised hopes that the worst might be over for Germany's economy. The eurozone's traditional export powerhouse shrank for the past two years, battered by high energy costs and fierce Chinese competition -- and now faces a massive extra hit from Trump's tariff blitz. A new baseline US levy of 15 percent on European Union exports took effect Thursday, with the EU among dozens of US trading partners facing higher tariffs. "It looks highly unlikely that exports could soon again be a significant growth driver for the German economy," Brzeski said. "The new tariffs will clearly weigh on economic growth." Data released Thursday also showed that German exports in June to the United States -- the country's biggest trading partner -- fell 2.1 percent, after having registered a steep decline in May. Overall exports in June rose 0.8 percent month-on-month however, Destatis said, more than the 0.5-percent increase expected in a FactSet poll of analysts.

Capturing CO₂ through cryogenics: Eiffage pioneers new technology to decarbonize its industry
The installation – a metal tower 11 meters high, flanked by a container and a tank, one for storing liquid nitrogen and the other for capturing carbon dioxide (CO 2) – would almost go unnoticed beside the two enormous lime kilns that continuously transform limestone, extracted from a quarry owned by Bocahut, into calcium oxide. This network of pipes and tubes, perpetually covered in white dust, is the demonstrator for the Lyon-based start-up Revcoo, which has developed a proprietary process for capturing CO 2. Since 2024, it has been tested on this 120-hectare open-air site, owned by French construction group Eiffage and located in Haut-Lieu (northern France), 25 kilometers south of Maubeuge. "For now, our pilot has a capture capacity of 1,000 metric tons of CO 2 per year. Our goal is to multiply that by 10 by 2027, then reach 80,000 to 100,000 metric tons in 2030 – the equivalent of the site's total emissions," explained Hugo Lucas, founder and president of Revcoo. The 33-year-old engineer founded the start-up in 2019 with the ambition of contributing to the decarbonization of heavy industry. His patented "CarbonCloud" technology is relatively straightforward: It captures smoke off the factory's chimneys, sorts out the CO 2 by freezing it, liquefies it, and then stores it in tanks. The entire process runs on electricity, with no water or solvents required.
