Malaysia finalises national technology action plan

SAMARKAND (June 23): Malaysia is currently finalising the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology Action Plan which sets a clear governance framework to ensure that AI serves not only efficiency, but also ethics, equity, and public interest.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the plan focuses on key sectors such as education, healthcare, energy, and agriculture, while building Malaysia's AI talent pipeline within the public sector and among youth.
'We are all aware that technology is not neutral. It must reflect the values of the society it serves,' he said in his speech at the United Nations Public Service Forum 2025 here today.
Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, noted that structural reform in the civil service must be accompanied by system transformation. In this regard, digitalisation has become both the enabler and accelerator of change.
Guided by the MyDigital Blueprint and the Public Service Digitalisation Strategic Plan, Fadillah said Malaysia has digitised over 500 government services and streamlined access through secure platforms such as MyDigital ID and real-time dashboards, he added.

Japan rice price falls below US$27 per 5kg for the first time since March
TOKYO (Bernama-Kyodo): The average price of rice in Japan fell below 4,000 yen (US$27) per five kilograms (kg) for the first time in around three and a half months to 3,920 yen, the government said on Monday, with increased distribution of stockpiles likely helping to drive down prices. According to Kyodo News Agency, during the seven days through June 15, the average price of rice sold at supermarkets across the nation fell by 256 yen per five kg from the previous week, dropping to the 3,000 yen range for the first time since the week ended March 2, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters that the drop was due in part to the release of additional rice reserves, stating that "a clear message from the government is proving effective." Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to bring the average retail price of five kg of rice down to the 3,000 yen range by the end of June. Last year, a household consumed 60.20 kg of rice, according to government consumer spending data. Even after the latest fall, the average price of rice remains nearly double that of a year earlier. Japan's core consumer prices in May rose 3.7 per cent from a year earlier, marking the biggest increase in more than two years, with rice prices setting a fresh record for the eighth consecutive month with a 101.7 per cent jump due to a supply shortage. On Monday, meanwhile, measures were put into place prohibiting the reselling of rice bought at retail stores to ensure that consumers have access to rice at stable prices. Malaysia Calls For Unity Among OIC Member States Amid Rising Tensions In Middle East
KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia seized the global stage at the recently concluded 51st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, calling for unity among member states to confront the challenges facing the Islamic world, particularly the Palestine issue and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Delivering the country's national statement, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan strongly condemned the atrocities committed by Israel, describing them as egregious crimes against humanity that must be stopped immediately. He also urged all parties to intensify international efforts towards the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday. bootstrap slideshow Mohamad also expressed deep concern over the rise in discrimination against Muslims and proposed that the OIC collaborate closely with the United Nations to foster religious tolerance and combat the spread of Islamophobia.
