Kelantan Has Potential To Become Major Local Onion Producer
Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, said the state's soil fertility was deemed suitable for onion cultivation and initial trials showed promising results.
He said KPKM had approved an allocation of RM6 million for the Onion Cultivation Development Project in three states, namely Selangor, Perak and Kelantan, involving 80 participants with an area of 94.85 hectares (ha), which includes 11 farmers (40 ha) in Selangor, 52 farmers (26.85 ha) in Kelantan, and 17 farmers (28 ha) in Perak.
Recently, Kelantan carried out its first harvest with an expected production yield of 18.4 tonnes from an area of 4.6 ha at the Telong Food Production Park (TKPM) in Bachok, which used the BAW-1 and BAW-2 varieties.
"This harvest result shows a positive achievement as it recorded high production of around four tonnes per hectare, so Insya-Allah, next year we want Kelantan to become the main producer of this onion because its land is fertile for onion cultivation," he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) for KPKM in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Regarding production costs, Mohamad explained that a comprehensive study has not yet been conducted to determine the actual cost comparison between local and imported onions.
'Regarding production costs, we still don't have precise figures. Some use the greenhouse method, which is quite expensive. Overall, the government has not yet finalised the production cost for one tonne of local onions.
'The cost also varies depending on whether it is grown outdoors or in a greenhouse. However, we see that the price gap with imported onions is not too wide," he said.
He also said that although there are no official figures yet, the government expects local onion production to reduce dependence on onion imports by up to 30 per cent.

Water And Energy Supply Key To Attracting Investors
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The ability to provide sufficient water and energy supply is among the main attractions for investors in the semiconductor, data centre, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) sectors in Malaysia, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said this was further strengthened by the country's capacity to provide professional manpower expertise, which was a key strategic requirement for investors. 'These two aspects (water and energy) are very strategic, and I wish to emphasise that we will not be able to maintain Malaysia's credibility as a peaceful and competent nation if we cannot resolve matters related to water and energy.

Govt will talk to other fifth-gen jet suppliers if Kuwait buy takes too long, says Defence Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Fifth-generation (5G) jets from France, the United States or Russia will be considered for procurement as part of efforts to replace Malaysia's current jets by 2040, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin said this would be considered if the delivery of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from Kuwait takes too long. 'The 5G jets, be it from France, the United States or Russia can be considered, although it will take a long evaluation period. 'We aim to replace our current jets by 2040,' he said when winding up debates on the 13th Malaysia Plan on Wednesday (Aug 20). He added that the ministry is not ruling out efforts to ensure all 18 of Malaysia's Sukhoi fighter jets are operational by 2030. Khaled explained that the procurement of the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from Kuwait is only a stopgap measure as part of efforts to procure new jets by 2040. He said discussions were held with Kuwait, adding that the United States, which is the supplying country, has no objections towards this procurement. Any procurement involving defence assets, including jets, must obtain approval from the supplying country, he explained. 'We will still have to undergo several processes, where members of our Air Force team will evaluate these jets in terms of preparedness, next month. 'We will also only be able to receive these jets once Kuwait receives their new jets from the United States,' he said, adding that there is still no set date on when this will take place. The minister was responding to a question by Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (IND-Tanjong Karang), who wanted to know about the status of procuring F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from Kuwait.

AmBank Targets Loan Growth In Line With Industry, Aims FY2026 Net Profit To Exceed RM2 Bln
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- AMMB Holdings Bhd (AmBank) expects its loan growth to keep pace with the industry at around 4 per cent this year, driven mainly by business banking and wholesale segments, while retail loans are expected to remain flat. Group chief executive officer Jamie Ling said the bank's focus will remain on higher-return portfolios. 'Business banking loans grew 12 per cent last year (financial year 2025 ended March 31, 2025), wholesale banking expanded 7 per cent, while retail declined by 2 per cent as we prioritised quality and returns over market share,' he said at a media briefing after the group's 34th annual general meeting here today. He said the group is also aiming to surpass last year's record net profit of RM2 billion. 'In the first quarter of the current financial year (1Q FY2026), we posted RM516 million in net profit, keeping the group on track despite softer investor sentiment and market uncertainties. 'We want to beat last year's record. That is the ambition,' Ling said, noting that volatility in trading and opportunities in wholesale and business lending could help sustain momentum. He said volatility signals uncertainty, but for a bank's market division, it can boost revenue streams, especially when coupled with solid demand for business and wholesale banking services. On margins, Ling said AmBank achieved a record net interest margin (NIM) of 2.01 per cent last year, the highest since he took office (in Nov 2023). However, with the recent overnight policy rate cut, this is expected to compress full-year NIM by three to four basis points to around 1.96-1.97 per cent.
