After being at the forefront of the bidding war for Juan Soto and the largest contract in Major League Baseball history, the pair of New York teams looked to both be headed back to October this season.
That was until the past two weeks, the New York Yankees entered Tuesday 3-7 in their last 10 games, and the New York Mets are 1-9 in the same span, and on a seven-game losing streak.

August is on pace to be the Yankees' worst month, and with two teams, the Cleveland Guardians and the Texas Rangers, within three games of the final spot, the Yankees are entering crunch time.
Much like their American League counterpart, the Mets started strong, but have faltered of late, falling to the final wild-card spot in the National League. A strong July has helped the Mets fend off the field for now, but in the second half of the season, the Mets are 8-13 entering Tuesday.
After being buyers at the trade deadline, including revamping their bullpen with the addition of Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers, the Mets have stumbled through August with a 1-8 record during the month. The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are knocking on the door, with both teams being within three games of the Mets.
The Yankees have the best chance to keep playoff baseball in New York, as they have the fourth-easiest schedule remaining, while the Mets have the ninth-hardest. Both teams were streaking early, but with a little under two months to play, they find themselves in danger of taking an early vacation.
