Devin Williams' Sudden Outburst in Yankees-Padres is Turning Heads

Devin Williams' first year with the New York Yankees hasn't exactly gone according to plan. His struggles on the mound have forced manager Aaron Boone to take away his job as the team's closer. It seemed as though his story with the Yankees was about to get even worse when he found himself dealing with a bases-loaded situation in the 10th inning of Wednesday night's game at Yankee Stadium against the San Diego Padres. Advertisement But the 30-year-old reliever found a way to get out of a jam. Needing just one more out to snuff San Diego's rally while on a full count and the game tied at 3-3, Williams threw an 84 MPH changeup that punched out Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts The two-time National League All-Star couldn't contain his emotion, as he let out a scream and pumped his fist before walking back to the dugout. Williams' show of emotion and clutch performance got him some extra attention from fans online. 'That was a close one. Glad he was able to keep it together,' said a fan. Another one commented: 'So hard to watch glad Williams was able to get it done‼️✅⚾️' Advertisement At least one social media user didn't seem impressed: 'Acting like he won the World Series after striking out an aging Bogaerts. J.C. Escarra's game-winning sacrifice fly leads Yankees to comeback win over Padres in 10

Try it free The loudest roar of the night at Yankee Stadium may have belonged to the Knicks. But Devin Williams and J.C. Escarra rivaled it by the 10th inning of a game the Yankees had to have. Advertisement After Williams left the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Escarra delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to lift the Yankees to a stirring 4-3 win over the Padres on Wednesday night in The Bronx. In what may have been the Yankees' best series win of the season, they came back twice with game-tying home runs from Cody Bellinger in the seventh (which broke up Dylan Cease's no-hit bid) and Trent Grisham's two-run shot in the eighth. Williams, who blew a three-run lead in the eighth inning of Monday's loss, redeemed himself in the top of the 10th with a high-wire act. Advertisement Facing the top of the Padres order, he walked a batter and hit a batter to load the bases with two outs, but then he struck out Xander Bogaerts — his third punch-out of the inning — on a full count and screamed as he walked off the mound. Oswaldo Cabrera, who failed to get a bunt down in Tuesday's seventh inning before it turned into a 10-run rally, laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Escarra then pinch hit for Oswald Peraza and worked a 2-2 count off Jeremiah Estrada before lifting a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Jasson Domínguez from third base. 6 A joyous J.C. Getty Images Advertisement Minutes after Bellinger's game-tying blast in the seventh, the Padres took the lead right back in the top of the eighth in front of a crowd of 42,302. In a bizarre scene, the crowd — most of whom were apparently following the Knicks-Celtics playoff showdown on their phones — erupted in a huge roar when the game went final, just as Jackson Merrill lifted an RBI single to left field to put the Padres up 2-1. Ian Hamilton had relieved Fried to start the eighth and issued a pair of walks around an out before giving way to Luke Weaver. Merrill's single came off Weaver, as did Bogaerts' sacrifice fly that made it 3-1. 6 Trent Grisham belts the game-tying home in eighth inning of the Yankees' comeback win over the Padres. After Cabrera led off with a walk, Grisham pinch hit for Jorbit Vivas and clobbered Jason Adam's changeup to right field for his 10th home run of the season that tied the game 3-3. AP The problem Wednesday was that it was the pitcher he was dueling that could not be touched. Bellinger finally changed that in the seventh inning, breaking up Cease's no-hit bid with a booming solo shot to the second deck in right field. Cease had Bellinger 0-2 and threw a 98 mph fastball just above the strike zone that the lefty hitter pounced on. It was a sour end to a superb night in which the Padres right-hander struck out eight and walked two. Fried, who flirted with a no-hitter last month at Tampa Bay and gave up one hit against the Rays in his most recent start, was plenty good himself. Fried allowed his first earned run since April 15 in the fourth inning when Merrill crushed a sweeper into the Yankees bullpen to put the Padres up 1-0. 6 Dylan Cease had no-hit the Yankees for 6 1/3 inning but lost the bid for history after Cody Bellinger's homer and then had to exit the game with an injury. J.C. Escarra helps solidify fairytale Yankees story with breakout game

J.C. Escarra's journey from Uber driver to backup catcher for the Yankees got another chapter on Sunday, as he homered for the first time in his major league career in a 5-1 win over Toronto in a doubleheader sweep in The Bronx. Escarra took ex-Yankee Chad Green deep to the right field seats with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give the Yankees a bit more of a cushion. 'I didn't feel the ball off the bat,'' Escarra said. 'It was amazing.' Advertisement J.C. Escarra celebrates his first MLB home run on April 27, 2025. Jason Szenes / New York Post And he said there was even more meaning to the blast because he hit it at Yankee Stadium. 'It's special that I did it here at home,'' Escarra said. 'This is my team, my family's team. It's a dream come true, doing everything as a Yankee.' Advertisement Escarra was able to trade an autographed bat in exchange for the ball. 'If you asked me two years ago if I'd be here doing this, I'd tell you you're lying,'' Escarra said. 'This is stuff you dream about, but to have it be reality is crazy.' And while the 29-year-old's unique background made him an intriguing story during spring training, Escarra will only stick around if he produces. So far, he's delivered on defense, which is what the Yankees expected after watching him in their minor league system a year ago. Advertisement 'He's here because he can catch,'' Aaron Boone said. 'He really earned that reputation in our organization last year. He throws really well, is outstanding with framing [and] seems to have some presence and feel for calling a game.' Escarra helped guide Clarke Schmidt through five innings, giving up just one run, in Schmidt's best start of the young season. 'He's fun to work with,'' the right-hander said after allowing a solo homer to Anthony Santander and four walks. 'I think everything I throw is a strike because he makes it look so good.' Advertisement J.C. Escarra and Luke Weaver celebrate win over the Blue Jays. Jason Szenes / New York Post The ever-positive Escarra has also drawn praise for his positive attitude. 'He's so competitive and is always smiling,'' Schmidt said. 'You root for a guy like that. He appreciates the moment and doesn't take anything for granted.' CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Boone also noted that the lefty-swinging Escarra has some power. Although he has just five hits on the season, three are for extra-bases. And he added an RBI single off lefty reliever Brendon Little in the sixth. 'This is cool for him,'' said Luke Weaver, who pitched the ninth. 'He's worked really hard at it.'
