Samrat hails naming MPs' residential block as Kosi

Time of India3 days ago
Patna: Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary hailed the Centre's decision to name one of the four blocks of the 184 new MPs residential flats built in Delhi after river Kosi of Bihar. He thanked
PM Narendra Modi
, who inaugurated the residential premises on Monday.
"Kosi is not a bane, but a blessing for Bihar," Samrat said.
The other three blocks have been named as Krishna, Godavari and Hooghly.
While inaugurating the residential complex, PM Modi also took a jibe at the opposition and said, "Some people will feel uncomfortable with Kosi as the name of one of the four residential towers. They will not view it as a river, but rather through the lens of the Bihar elections. However, these four rivers give life to crores of people and now a new stream of happiness will flow in the lives of the public representatives living in the towers built in their names.
"
The Kosi was once synonymous with floods and disasters.
Samrat said naming a residential block for the members of Parliament as Kosi is an indicator of the PM's love for Bihar.
The double engine NDA govt at the Centre and in Bihar is engaged in changing the picture of the state, he said. "Kosi river, which was considered synonymous with floods and disasters for years, has now been made a means of water supply and prosperity for the state by the govt through a planned strategy.
The Kosi-Mechi interstate river linking project is going to be a boon for lakhs of farmers and the people of Bihar. This project is to be completed at a cost of Rs 6,282 crore.
The direct impact of this historic project has started showing on the economy, irrigation and life of North Bihar," the deputy CM said.
He added that the govt has set a target to complete this project by March 2029. "It will help irrigate 76,000 hectares of additional land and provide relief from the tragedy of floods," he said.
Samrat said the project will change the fate of the rural areas of the state. "Not only will there be relief from floods, but farmers will have water available for irrigation throughout the year. That will increase the yield manifold," he said.

Mamata plans ‘special celebration' for Kanyashree Diwas in 2026 if beneficiaries cross one crore

KOLKATA: Exuding confidence that the Trinamool Congress government will return to power in West Bengal for the fourth consecutive term after the Assembly polls due next year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she wants to celebrate 'Kanyashree Diwas' on a large scale in 2026. Currently, more than 93 lakh girl students in West Bengal are receiving the benefits of Kanyashree. Banerjee said that if the number of beneficiaries reaches one crore next year, a 'special celebration' will be organised for Kanyashree. Addressing the 'Kanyashree Diwas' programme at Dhanadhanya Auditorium in Alipore, she informed that the state government has already spent Rs 17,000 crore on this programme. If the Assembly elections are held on time next year, the new government is expected to be sworn in around May or June. 'Kanyashree Diwas' is celebrated on August 14. As a result, the 'special celebration' she spoke about on Thursday will take place after the elections. According to political observers, Banerjee's advance announcement of the 'special celebration' after the elections by setting targets is politically significant, as she allegedly wanted to convey that her government will return to power in 2026. In this context, many in the state administration are referring to the Chief Minister's administrative meeting in Birbhum a few weeks ago. In that meeting, speaking about the housing project, she said, 'I have already given money for the 'Banglar Bari' project to 12 lakh people. Another 16 lakh people will get the first instalment next December. Whatever is left, I will pay in three-four years.' This indicates that, beyond the special celebration of 'Kanyashree Diwas', Banerjee has allegedly begun outlining what she will do after the elections. In 2013, the West Bengal government launched the 'Kanyashree' project to prevent child marriage and to help girls from economically backward families pursue their education. Initially, it was only for schoolgirls, but later, girl students of colleges and universities were also included.

Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates state-level Van Mahotsav

Shimla, Aug 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav at Kanlog in Shimla, and said that around 9,000 hectares of forest land this year would be planted with trees under different schemes. Sukhu added 60 per cent of these saplings would bear fruits as he also planted a deodar sapling during the event. Additionally, he launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and MLAs participating in the programme, and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail. Addressing a gathering on this occasion, he said that Van Mahotsav highlights the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline. He said that the state government was working to protect and enrich the bio-diversity of the state. 'These efforts will contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030," he added. The chief minister said that the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana would not only promote forest development, but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy. 'Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years. A budget provision of Rs 100 crore has been made for this purpose," he said. He said that the state government was also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing various reforms in the working of the Forest department. 'The officers are being encouraged to dedicate more time to field work related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines," he said. He also gave cheques of Rs one lakh each to different mahila mandals for tree plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Apart from this, cheques of Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under the JICA project. EC issues notices to Vaishali MP, MLC husband over dual EPICs

1 2 Patna: The Election Commission on Thursday issued notices to Vaishali MP Veena Devi and her husband, MLC Dinesh Prasad Singh, for allegedly possessing two separate voter ID cards and being registered as voters in multiple constituencies in Muzaffarpur district. Devi is an MP from Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) while Singh is a MLC from JD(U). Both have been asked to submit their replies by Aug 16. The notice issued to the MP by the electoral registration officer (ERO) of Muzaffarpur assembly constituency read, "It has come to our notice that your name appears as a voter in the SIR draft roll at booth number 325 (EPIC number UTO1134543) of Sahebganj assembly constituency and also at booth number 371 (EPIC number GSB1037894) of Muzaffarpur assembly constituency. Prior to SIR too, your name was found registered at two places. " The notice directed her to respond by Aug 16 for further action. A similar notice was separately issued to her husband. The development followed allegations by leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who claimed that both leaders hold dual EPICs and are registered as voters in two different assembly constituencies in Muzaffarpur district. Alleging large-scale discrepancies in the preparation of the voter list, Tejashwi said, "This is part of a conspiracy aimed at ensuring the victory of NDA candidates. How did they become voters in two different assembly constituencies? That means they must have signed two different enumeration forms. Is this not electoral fraud by the EC to ensure NDA's victory? Will the EC accept these irregularities and its mistakes in SIR?" Tejashwi also questioned how the duo managed to procure two separate EPIC numbers. Defending herself, Veena Devi said she had applied long ago to have her name deleted from one voter list. "I don't know how my name still exists at two places in the voter's list. This is totally the fault of the BLO and Election Commission employee," she said. Devi added that she had submitted another application seeking deletion of her name from one list after the controversy resurfaced. Singh has not yet issued any clarification.
