Anwar Hails ASEAN Power Grid Success, Praises Vietnam's Role In Energy Transition

PUTRAJAYA, May 25 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Power Grid undersea cable project linking Vietnam to Peninsular Malaysia and onward to Singapore stands out as one of the key achievements of this year's ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who is on a five-day official visit to Malaysia starting yesterday, Anwar also expressed appreciation for Vietnam's strong support in advancing regional energy transition policies.
'All our programmes that we initiate, either in the context of multilateral ASEAN mechanisms or within bilateral Malaysia and Vietnam, you (Vietnam) have been very, very supportive.
'We not only pronounce but make impressive pronouncements on the gigantic projects or collaboration or diplomatic endeavour, but this time, we have been able to concretise it through effective programmes and projects, which is consistent with our energy transition policy for alternative energy for the ASEAN region,' he said.
Anwar had previously announced that Malaysia would spearhead the first phase of an ambitious regional power grid integration plan, linking Vietnam to both northern and southern Peninsular Malaysia, and eventually connecting it to Singapore via the Malaysia National Grid.
Anwar noted that Malaysia-Vietnam ties, elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last year, have progressed rapidly, with tangible cooperation already in place across sectors such as agriculture (via MARDI), academia and maritime security.
While acknowledging that some challenges remain, Anwar said both nations have agreed to strengthen collaboration through joint operations and enhanced security arrangements.
He also commended Chinh's economic stewardship, describing Vietnam's progress under his leadership as 'phenomenal'.
'You (Pham) yourself are an economist; you have done remarkably well. Despite starting from a very low base after a period of devastation, but then in the few decades you have grown, and the transformation that has taken place is something that we admire, and there are certainly lessons we can learn from your experience,' he said.

PERKESO fraud probe saves over RM48mil
KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) investigated close to 1,200 suspected fraud cases with various schemes involving long-term funds of over RM60.84mil, it was revealed. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim ( pic ) said these included active investigations into 679 cases of fraud involving Temporary Disability Benefit (FHUS), Permanent Disability Benefit (FHUK), Invalidity Scheme and Health Screening Programme (HSP), involving savings of over RM48.64mil in social security funds. He said the investigations were conducted from 2020 until April. 'This success was achieved as a result of the investigation leading to the decision to suspend 383 cases or 56.5% of the total investigated, which shows that strict governance and management can have a major impact on the efficiency of the system,' he said in his keynote address at the opening of a seminar on Fraud, Evasion and Error in Social Security and Insurance Claims organised by PERKESO in collaboration with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (Abime) here yesterday. Over the same period, Sim said a total of 509 Constant Attendance Allowance (ELS) were reviewed with 117 cases proposed for suspension, which led to long-term savings of more than RM12.2mil. He said benefit fraud remained a challenge with losses reaching RM2.1mil throughout last year stemming from invalid claims. (Benefit fraud is committed when people deliberately claim benefits they are not entitled to). Sim said the ministry was fully committed to leading the reform of the country's social system by involving the entire related ecosystem. 'The challenge of fraud is now global, driven by the mobility of labour and cross-border services, so Malaysia needs to adopt a comprehensive prevention framework that includes legal reforms, strict enforcement, digital innovation and transparent communication. 'I hope this seminar will be a catalyst for a more robust and resilient social security system,' Sim said. The seminar, which saw some 400 participants, brought together various stakeholders including the Medical Board panel, members of the Appeals Board, representatives of enforcement agencies and insurance companies. It was aimed at addressing the challenges of fraudulent claims, system weaknesses and unethical practices that threatened the sustainability of the social protection system. Also present were PERKESO chairman Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal, group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed and Abime president and founder Prof Dr Mohammed Ranavaya. At the event, Dr Mohammed Azman received the Lifetime Fellowship of the American College of Independent Medical Examiners (Facime) and Master Certified Independent Medical Examiner awards. The awards were presented by Prof Mohammed Ravanaya to Dr Mohammed Azman for his contributions in the field of disability medicine and occupational health. Facime is the highest qualification in the field of disability medicine awarded only to those who have achieved the highest level of knowledge, skills and abilities as a quality Independent Medical Examiner.

Cops beefing up security for Asean council meet
KUANTAN: Police will step up security ahead of next week's 2025 Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Advisory Council On Dangerous Drugs meeting. Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said they are actively carrying out early preparations in terms of security so that the programme, which is scheduled to be held in Kuantan and Pekan, would proceed smoothly. 'We will ensure there are no hindrances when they hold the meeting as well as make sure everything is safe. 'If there is a need for road closures, they will be kept to a minimum and carried out in stages to ensure smooth traffic flow,' Comm Yahaya told reporters after attending an award ceremony at the Pahang police headquarters here yesterday, Bernama reported. He added that security preparations would be further improved after today's meeting with state Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.
