The deceased woman has been identified as Rekha Yadav (50). She and her injured husband Gopal Yadav (54) lived in New Panvel. Acting on a complaint by Gopal Yadav, Kharghar police have booked Tithi Vinayak Singh, an engineering student, who lives in New Panvel, under relevant sections of BNS for rash driving on public way, causing death by negligence and endangering human life or personal safety of other. However, as per the provision of the law, the accused Singh was not arrested but served with a notice under BNSS directing her to co-operate in police investigation, informed Kharghar police.
The mishap occurred around 8.45 pm when the accused Tithi Singh was returning home on her Mercedes after visiting her friend in Belapur.— George Mendonca

Noida daycare horror: Attendant ‘slaps and bites' 15-month-old toddler, ‘bashes head into wall'
A teenage attendant and the owner of a daycare centre at a residential complex in Noida's Sector 137 have been arrested after the parents of a 15-month-old toddler accused the former of allegedly assaulting and biting their child. CCTV footage from the daycare centre surfaced on social media, in which the attendant is seen repeatedly slapping, hitting and throwing the child on the floor as she cries in pain. In the 10-minute-28-second video, the attendant holds the toddler in her arms and shuts the door of a room in the centre. The attendant is then seen picking up a green plastic bat from the floor with her foot and hitting the toddler's head multiple times. She then walks around the dimly-lit room, hitting the toddler's head against the wall and later throwing her on the floor. The parents later noticed the marks on the child's body and rushed her to a doctor. In her complaint to the police on August 7, the mother said her child goes to the daycare centre for two hours every day. On August 4, when she brought her child from the centre, she was crying. 'I was changing her clothes when I saw bite marks on both her thighs. I rushed her to the doctor, who said it was a bite mark,' the woman said in her complaint. 'To find out what happened, I went to the daycare centre and asked them to show me the CCTV footage. I saw the attendant slapping my child, throwing her on the floor, and hitting her with a plastic bat. It was the attendant who bit her on her thighs,' alleged the mother to the police. She said that despite her daughter's frantic cries, the daycare owner did not intervene. The complaint further alleged that when the mother confronted the owner and attendant, they misbehaved with her and issued threats. The Noida Police has registered an FIR against the two under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the BNS. Speaking to The Indian Express, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vir Kumar, said they had taken both women into custody on the same day the FIR was filed. 'They were arrested, but since it was a bailable offence, they filed a bond. The girl who was assaulting the child was a minor and had joined the daycare only 10 days earlier,' he said. Case filed against Tiruchy jail deputy jailor, 22 others for attacking convict
TIRUCHY: The KK Nagar police on Saturday registered a case against deputy jailor Manikandan, head warder Arunkumar, another unnamed prison official, and 20 guards of Tiruchy Central Prison for allegedly assaulting a convict, M Harikarasudhan. The case was filed after a complaint was registered by M Angamal, mother of the convict, with the DIG (prisons). An inquiry report by the principal district judge of Tiruchy confirmed the allegations, which were also reviewed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Following this, the jurisdictional police station, which is KK Nagar police station, registered a case under seven BNS provisions, including Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 117(2) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and Section 127(2) for wrongful confinement. Harikarasudhan, a Madurai native serving time at Tiruchy Central Prison, was transferred from Madurai Central Prison in October 2024 to pursue an ITI course after completing Class 10 in custody. He was convicted in a ganja case last year. His mother alleged that he was assaulted last month and denied visits from family and lawyers, prompting her to file a habeas corpus petition. On August 7, Justices A D Jagadish Chandira and R Poornima, citing an inquiry report by a district court judge, sought detailed records from prison authorities. They then set aside a privilege withdrawal imposed on the convict in violation of prison rules and allowed Angammal to meet Harikarasudhan, permitting him to file a complaint in the KK Nagar police station. The matter will be heard on August 11.

Kidney trafficking: Tamil Nadu cancels transplant licences of two hospitals
NAMAKKAL: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to permanently cancel the kidney transplant licences of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Tiruchy following a health department probe into a suspected kidney trafficking racket in Namakkal district that uncovered irregularities and illegal practices. The racket came to light when police and health officials received complaints about brokers allegedly coercing vulnerable individuals from Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal into selling kidneys. Subsequently, Health Minister Ma Subramanian ordered a detailed probe by a panel led by S Vineet, Project Director of TN Health System Reform Programme. The panel's report, details of which were released on Sunday, revealed that activities by both the hospitals violated the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, with evidence showing that forged documents were obtained and submitted by the private hospitals to improperly secure authorisation for transplants. Brokers acquired the organs for money, and transplants were conducted in breach of laws, the report said. Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan MCH and Cethar Hospital were the two hospitals primarily accused of involvement in the racket and their transplant licences were earlier temporarily suspended. Now, based on the report, the government will proceed with permanent cancellation of the transplant licence through Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services. Also, FIRs have been filed against Anandan and Stanley Mohan, accused of brokering the deals, under BNS sections, based on their bank transactions and call records.
