'Must-see' crime drama with perfect Rotten Tomatoes tops streaming chart
A new crime drama that fans have hailed a "must-see" has climbed its way up Amazon Prime Video's charts, with viewers branding it "one of the best shows of the year."
The series called Ballard follows Los Angeles Police Detective Renée Ballard as she attempts to solve a new cold case unit within the Robbery-Homicide Division. Ballard is a spinoff from the detective series Bosch that aired between 2014 and 2021 and followed LAPD Detective Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver).
This time around, the series follows Maggie Q as she takes on the role of Renée as she leads a team of police officers and detectives attempting to solve decade old crimes including murders.
This series, which is based on Michael Connelly's detective novels, sees Renée open up the investigations to end up uncovering a web of corruption and secrets within the police department.
The official synopsis reads: "Detective Renée Ballard plunges into a web of murder and corruption as she hunts a ruthless serial killer and uncovers a sinister police conspiracy that threatens everything she stands for."
'With her own demons nipping at her heels, Ballard must outwit both criminals and colleagues to bring long-overdue justice to the victims and their families.'
Just days after it aired on Amazon Prime Video, Ballard climbed the Prime Video's UK charts and scored a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
One viewer praised the show, taking to Rotten Tomatoes to write: "It doesn't disappoint and lives up to all expectations. It should surprise no one that Michael Connelly has another winner. Must watch TV!'
Another stated: "I can't stop watching it. After every episode, I think, "I need to go do x," but then I watch another.'
'Very engaging, I binged the whole thing without stopping,' someone else said.
Over on X, formally known as Twitter, one fan expressed: "#Ballard is amazing. It picks up the pace when needed but also slows down, giving you time to breathe without ever being boring. It's been so long since I've seen a show do that, and isn't just a sensory overload (even if you binge it in a day). Also Maggie Q is absolutely [fire].'
'What a rollercoaster! Ballard was worth the binge... So far, Harry Bosch's universe remains undefeated,' another added.
In addition to roaring reviews from viewers, critics have also acclaimed the Amazon Prime series. "Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, 'Ballard' is a thrilling ride from start to finish,' a Variety critic said.
While a review from Paste Magazine stated: 'Ballard is kick-a**, earnest, and extremely well-written, and may well be one of the best shows of the year.'
Responding to the calls for a second season, Maggie Q shared with Variety: 'The good news is we have a writers' room already, so that's very positive. That does not mean we're going to get greenlit for a second season!"
'I wish it did, but I've had writers' rooms start and then end. But the good news is that we are breaking the second season, which is very exciting.'

The Assassin fans are only just recognising Neighbours legend in pivotal role
The Assassin is the latest thriller which has left viewers on the edge of their seats. The Assassin airs on Prime Video and the exhilarating drama stars Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore as estranged mother and son, Julie and Edward. Julie, a retired killer for hire, had been living a life of solitude in the stunning setting of Greece in The Assassin until her son showed up with questions about his upbringing. As Julie's past came back to haunt her, various influential figures from her life were introduced, including Aaron Cross - the billionaire father of Edward's fiancée Kayla (Shalom Brune-Franklin). Viewers are only just realising Aaron Cross is played by Alan Dale, a 78-year-old New Zealand actor known for playing Jim Robinson in Neighbours. The soap legend's role of Jim was one of Neighbours' twelve original characters, who made his debut in the first-ever episode in 1985. He was the patriarch of the Robinson family and his role was described as an anchor, similar to Leslie Grantham's role of Den Watts in EastEnders. The actor stayed for eight years before Jim was killed off, following a dispute with the show's producers over pay. 'I made some sort of crack about the fact that when we started doing Neighbours [in 1985], we got paid the same money as when I was doing The Young Doctors [which he starred in from 1979-1983],' he told TV Week. In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the star said he struggled to find work in Australia after Neighbours because he was typecast as Jim. He did reprise his role in 2018, during the Christmas Day episode, appearing as part of a ghostly sequence. Dale went on to star in The O.C, NCIS, Ugly Betty and Dominion. One of his latest roles was as Owen Deveraux in season two of Wreck. As a child, he was a keen rugby player and after retiring from the sport, he decided to become a professional actor at 27 years old. Dale then moved to Australia, where one of his first roles was as Dr John Forrest in The Young Doctors from 1979 to 1982. He and his family live in Manhattan Beach, California, and he owns property in Australia. The father-of-four married Tracey Pearson, the 1986 Miss Australia, in 1990.

New TV show imagines China invasion, gives Taiwan viewers wake-up call
TAIPEI, July 28 (Reuters) - A new Taiwanese television series that imagines the run-up to a Chinese invasion is getting rave reviews from viewers, who said the first programme featuring the sensitive topic is a wake-up call for the public facing heightened Chinese military threat. In the show, "Zero Day Attack", a Chinese war plane goes missing near Taiwan. China then sends swarms of military boats and planes for a blockade as Taiwan goes on a war footing. Panic ensues on the streets of Taipei. At viewings in Taipei last week attendees have included the top U.S. diplomat in Taiwan Raymond Greene, who is director of the American Institute in Taiwan, and Taiwanese tycoon Robert Tsao, a strident critic of Beijing. The series is set to premiere on August 2 in Taiwan, followed by its Japanese release on Amazon Prime Video. "Presenting such a situation (of conflict) can lead to more discussion about what we should do if it really turns into reality one day," said Blair Yeh, a 35-year-old engineer, after watching the first episode in the Taipei premier last week. The premise of "Zero Day Attack" is a topic that has for years been considered too sensitive for many Taiwan filmmakers and television show creators, who fear losing access to the lucrative Chinese entertainment market. More than half of the show's crew asked to remain anonymous on the crew list, and some people including a director pulled out of the production at the last minute, its showrunner Cheng Hsin Mei told Reuters. But as China steps up military threats, including at least six rounds of major war games in the past five years and daily military activities close to Taiwan, the upcoming drama confronts the fear by setting the 10-episode series around a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The drama focuses on several scenarios Taiwan might face in the days leading up to a Chinese attack, including a global financial collapse, the activation of Chinese sleeper agents and panicked residents trying to flee the island. "Without freedom, Taiwan is not Taiwan," the actor who plays a fictional Taiwan president says in a televised speech, urging unity after declaring war on China, in the show's trailer. The live broadcast then gets abruptly cut off, replaced by a feed of a Chinese state television anchor calling for Taiwanese to surrender and to report "hidden pro-independence activists" to Chinese soldiers after their landing in Taiwan. "We've been comfortable for a long time now," said viewer Leon Yu, 43-year-old semiconductor industry professional, adding Taiwan's freedom and democracy must be kept. "There's still a lot of people out there burying their head in the sand and don't want to face the dangers of the present."

Vanessa Kirby confirms huge Fantastic Four secret everyone is talking about
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Vanessa Kirby has confirmed the truth behind that Fantastic Four mid-credits sequence. The British actress, 37, plays Sue Storm—or the Invisible Woman, to those in the know—in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Sue makes up one quarter of Marvel's First Family, appearing alongside husband Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), hotheaded brother Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and human rock face The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as the titular Fantastic Four. With the Fantastic Four's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut out now, audiences have been flocking in droves to witness their arrival. The team may have their hands full battling cosmic world-eater Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), but there'll be an even bigger villain on fans' minds once the end credits finish rolling. With the cat out of the bag, Kirby has clarified what Doctor Doom's cameo at the end of the film means… and confirmed that star Robert Downey Jr. is already very much back. In the first of two post-credits sequences, Sue is shocked to find a menacing hooded figure looming over her young son, Franklin. Fans will already know this to be the Fantastic Four's longtime nemesis, Doctor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming sequel, Avengers: Doomsday. Although the villain's face is obscured, Kirby has revealed that it was indeed Downey Jr. behind that hood. 'Yeah! Robert's never not been on set,' she told Variety when asked whetherRDJ was present for the shoot. She continued: 'He's always there. He is our leader. We call him our Godfather. He's looked after us. This sequence was filmed by the Russo Brothers as part of their work on Avengers: Doomsday and shot while Kirby was pregnant in real life. 'It's such a joy working with the Russos and him, because they've had such deep collaboration for so long,' she revealed. 'And it's been amazing being pregnant and working on Avengers. I felt so inspired and so relieved that I've been so taken care of. It's been a really beautiful journey. Robert is just doing incredible work. I'm so excited.' It was announced last year that Downey Jr. would be returning to the long-running franchise, six years after being killed off in Avengers: Endgame. This came as Earth's mightiest heroes faced off against purple menace Thanos (Josh Brolin) for the fate of the universe. This spelt the end of Downey Jr.'s career-defining stint as Tony Stark—aka Iron Man—sacrificing himself at the end of the film to secure the future of reality as we know it. A few years later, it was confirmed that he would be returning, albeit in an entirely different role. The actor's appointment to the post was unveiled at last year's Comic-Con, when a cloaked Downey Jr. removed his mask to reveal that he would be playing Doom, real name Victor von Doom. This character was previously played by late Nip/Tuck actor Julian McMahon in the 2005 and 2007 films and by Toby Kebbell in the 2015 reboot. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Doom's brief appearance at the end of First Steps gives little away as to what he has planned, although we do know it involves Sue and Reed's infant son. He will spearhead a massive cast in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently set for release on December 26, 2026. More Trending Names already announced include Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright and Paul Rudd, as well as X-Men actors Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden. Of his return to the MCU, Downey Jr. joked: 'New mask, same task. 'What did I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.' The Fantastic Four: First Steps is out in UK cinemas now. Got a story?
