Thai Tourism Minister Sorawong expresses regret over assault on two Malaysian tourists in Bangkok
Speaking on Friday (Aug 8), Sorawong said he had instructed agencies under his ministry — particularly the Tourist Police and all relevant security units, to provide urgent assistance and close protection to the victims.
He also ordered tighter security measures in major tourist areas to boost confidence among international visitors.

The ministry's support measures include:
- Assisting the tourists in applying for compensation under the aid scheme for injured and deceased foreign visitors.
- Directing the Tourist Assistance Centre (TAC) to monitor their medical treatment closely and facilitate documentation, foreign language communication, and coordination with relevant agencies such as the Malaysian Embassy, hospitals, insurers, Tourist Police, local police, and other bodies.
- Ministry executives are also planning to visit the injured tourists to offer encouragement and reassurance, once doctors permit.
Sorawong emphasised that the Thai government prioritises the safety and welfare of all visitors.
'I wish the injured and their families strength, and I want to assure everyone that Thailand will do everything possible to care for and protect tourists so our country remains a safe and attractive destination,' he said.
The incident occurred when a 30-year-old former boxer, in a state of distress, allegedly doused the Malaysian tourists with thinner and set them on fire outside a prominent shopping mall in the Ratchaprasong area.
The suspect confessed to the attack, claiming he had no prior conflict with the victims but acted out of stress due to unemployment and lack of income. - The Nation/ANN

Foreigner caught using fake Malaysian driving licence for luxury car
KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign national was caught driving a luxury car using a suspected fake Malaysian driving licence during the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) Ops Luxury 3.0. The operation, which ended yesterday, revealed multiple offences involving nine foreigners driving high-end vehicles. JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan confirmed the foreigner from a South Asian country was found with a counterfeit licence. He stated that further investigations will determine how the fake document was obtained. 'We do not rule out the possibility of a syndicate forging the document, and a thorough investigation from various aspects will be carried out,' he said at a press conference. All nine foreigners were issued summonses for offences including driving without insurance and expired road tax. Muhammad Kifli added that JPJ will collaborate with the Immigration Department and other agencies to probe the case. He emphasised that no leniency will be shown to traffic offenders, regardless of nationality. Ops Luxury 3.0 targeted luxury vehicles involved in traffic violations, resulting in the seizure of 104 cars, including Ferraris, Range Rovers, and Porsches. GOF foils smuggling of 16,000kg pork carcasses in Kelantan
KOTA BHARU: The 8th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16,000 kilogrammes of pork carcasses into Malaysia. The interception occurred along Jalan Besar Kampung Apal on the Kelantan-Terengganu Highway during a routine inspection. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid confirmed the lorries lacked valid documentation for the meat. Authorities suspect the pork originated from Thailand and was destined for local markets in Malaysia. Three individuals, including two drivers and a lorry attendant, were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt. All suspects are Indian nationals aged between 23 and 46 years old. The seized items, including the two lorries, have an estimated total value of RM1.04 million. The Terengganu Veterinary Department has taken custody of the confiscated goods for further investigation. The case is being probed under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953, which regulates the import and export of animal products.
