EC should start SIR in Andhra quickly as every vote counts: TDP

The opposition is trying to build a narrative on the ground against the ongoing SIR in Bihar on several counts. Our party is against it. That's the reason the TDP approached the EC and presented suggestions about Andhra Pradesh. We are not talking about Bihar, Andaman, or Tamil Nadu. Our focus is clearly on Andhra Pradesh. We told them that we had elections a year back, and the next election is due only in 2029. We have four years in hand. Since the EC has made it clear that SIR will be conducted across the country, we asked them to start the process in Andhra as early as possible.
But Bihar got very little time to do the exercise.
We haven't mentioned Bihar in our letter to the EC.
What are the other concerns?
Our concern is about the main stakeholders in this exercise, that is the voter. It's neither about the politicians, MLAs who are contesting, the officers who have to oversee this whole process, nor the EC conducting this activity. It's about the comfort that we can provide to the voter. We want them to be as comfortable as possible. In Andhra, we have everything available and enough time for four years. We want them to start it soon so that every voter can be counted on, every voter's identity can be created, and we make sure that every voter is identified transparently.

Oppn pushes for SIR debate in LS
New Delhi: Proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday were disrupted by the Opposition parties over the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted in Bihar and other issues, leading to adjournment of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for the day. When the Lok Sabha assembled at 2 PM after the second adjournment, Opposition parties trooped into the well, raising slogans and demanding discussion on the SIR issue. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed displeasure over the continuous protest by the Opposition MPs saying that the government is ready for discussion on every issue as per the constitutional and parliamentary procedures and rules. He said, SIR is under sub judice in the Supreme Court and it cannot be discussed in the House. He said, discussing the SIR issue in Parliament would mean breaking the rules and conventions. Rijiju said matters concerning the functioning and responsibilities of the Election Commission of India (ECI), being an autonomous constitutional body, could not be discussed in the House. Rijiju emphasized that rules are clear that discussion cannot be held on the working of autonomous bodies like Election Commission. He urged the protesting members to allow the House to function as important bills are listed to take up. Amidst the noisy scene, the House passed the Merchant Shipping Bill 2024 with amendments moved by Port, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbanada Sonowal. As the ruckus continued, the Presiding Officer adjourned the House for the day.
