‘I don't think I'm special': Scheffler plays down latest major win after Open cruise

The Guardian5 days ago
Scottie Scheffler has insisted that he does not think he is anything special despite winning his fourth major in three years after a dominant Open victory at Portrush.
The 29-year-old American won by four shots from Harris English to complete the third leg of a career grand slam, and afterwards he was compared to Tiger Woods by the Open winner last year, Xander Schauffele, and the 2019 champion, Shane Lowry.
Scheffler also doubled down when he was reminded he said before the Open that winning the Claret Jug would be awesome for only two minutes, and that his family and faith were more important.
'I don't think that I'm anything special just because some weeks I'm better at shooting a lower score than other guys are,' Scheffler said.
'Am I grateful for it? Do I enjoy it? Oh my gosh yes, this is a cool feeling. I can't wait to get home and celebrate this championship with the people that have helped me along the way. But at the end of the day, it doesn't fulfil the deepest desires of my heart. I don't know why I'm so lucky that I get to live out my dreams, but it's something I'm very grateful for.
'If somebody was going to listen to the comments I had this week, I would encourage them to listen to all of it, and I hope I did a good job communicating that this is amazing to win the Open Championship. But at the end of the day, having success in life, whether it be in golf, work, whatever it is, that's not what fulfills the deepest desires of your heart.'
Pressed by reporters, Scheffler said: 'Just because you win a golf tournament or accomplish something, it doesn't make you happy. It doesn't – maybe for a few moments, maybe for a few days, but at the end of the day, there's more to life than playing golf. I'm pretty excited to go home and celebrate this one.'
Scheffler also played down comparisons with Tiger Woods. 'I still think they're a bit silly. Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. I just got one-fourth of the way there. I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf.'
Scheffler, who lifted the Claret Jug with one arm while holding his 14‑month‑old son Bennett, also revealed that his love of golf was already being passed down to his offspring. 'It's very cool to have him here,' Scheffler said. 'He obviously has no clue what's going on.

'Bennett started swinging a club back and forth. I put a golf ball down, and he hit it. To be able to occupy a one-year-old with anything is probably a pretty good thing for them to be able to focus on.
'It's pretty special to be able to celebrate here with my family. I hope Bennett's able to get into golf one day. The game of golf has taught me a tremendous amount. I feel like every day you go out and play golf you're looking in the mirror, and I've met some of my best friends through the game of golf.
'It's a very special game. You call penalties on yourself, and it's just – you learn a lot of good life lessons by playing golf. I hope he can play one day, and I hope he enjoys it as much as I do.'

Saniyah Hall, No. 1 recruit in 2026, commits to USC

July 26 - Saniyah Hall, considered the No. 1 prospect in the women's basketball Class of 2026, committed to Southern California on Friday. "I would say it felt like home," Hall said in her announcement on ESPN. "The girls there are so fun to be around. The coaches ... have high support, but (head coach Lindsay Gottlieb) is definitely there to just support me and I've built a relationship with her -- she's a great coach." The commitment means the Trojans have signed three of the past four players ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPNW, following JuJu Watkins (2023) and Jasmine "Jazzy" Davidson (2025). Hall chose USC over rival UCLA and North Carolina. Hall is listed at 6-foot-2 and can play guard or forward. A native of Lorain, Ohio, she transferred from Florida's Montverde Academy to SPIRE Academy in Ohio for her senior year of high school. She was named MVP at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup this summer, where she played alongside Davidson on Team USA as they won gold. Hall averaged 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.9 steals in the tournament. Gottlieb has led USC to No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years. The Trojans fell in the Elite Eight both times. --Field Level Media

Kyle Schwarber homers twice as Phillies outslug Yankees

July 26 - Kyle Schwarber homered twice and J.T. Realmuto hit a tiebreaking three-run blast in the seventh inning as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies pulled away for a 12-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday. Schwarber hit his 35th and 36 home runs, belting a tying two-run shot off New York starter Will Warren in the fifth and a two-run drive off Ian Hamilton in the eighth for an 8-5 lead. Schwarber notched his 1,000th career hit on his first homer and recorded his 33rd career multi-homer game. He has six home runs in seven games since the All-Star break. Schwarber's second homer occurred after Philadelphia entered the seventh with a 3-2 deficit after Giancarlo Stanton homered to put the Yankees on top in the sixth. The Phillies quickly began a rally by getting singles from Trea Turner and Schwarber off Tim Hill (3-3). After Bryce Harper advanced the runners with a groundout to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, Luke Weaver took over on the mound. Nick Castellanos hit a grounder to Goldschmidt, who was playing slightly off the bag, and the first baseman's throw sailed high and past catcher Austin Wells as Turner scored the tying run. Following Goldschmidt's third error of the season, Realmuto hammered Weaver's 0-1 changeup into the left field seats for a 6-3 lead. Bryson Stott contributed a two-run single in a four-run ninth inning for the Phillies, who finished with 14 hits and put up 10 runs in the final three innings. Turner capped the scoring with an RBI triple. Cody Bellinger and Wells hit solo homers off Philadelphia starter Taijuan Walker in the first two innings. New York's Anthony Volpe homered in the seventh off Jordan Romano before Aaron Judge hit a sacrifice fly to get the Yankees within 6-5. Walker allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked none. Tanner Banks (3-2) notched the final out of the sixth before Romano allowed two runs in the seventh. Orion Kerkering pitched the eighth and before Philadelphia's second four-run inning. Warren gave up two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked three. By taking the opener of a three-game series, the Phillies earned their third win in four games. The Yankees, who lost for the sixth time in nine games, acquired Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday to be their everyday third baseman. --Field Level Media

Twins' Zebby Matthews and three relievers blank Nationals

July 26 - Zebby Matthews pitched six scoreless innings, Byron Buxton drove in the game's lone run, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 1-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Friday night in Minneapolis. Royce Lewis ripped a double for the only extra-base hit for the Twins, who won the series opener despite tallying only three hits. Buxton hit a sacrifice fly to produce the only run. Daylen Lile went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base to lead Washington. Matthews (2-2) turned in his most impressive performance of the season. The Twins' right-hander limited the Nationals to two hits, walked none and struck out seven. Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore (4-10) absorbed a hard-luck loss in a season that has been filled with them. He gave up one run on one hit in five innings, but he struggled with command as he issued six walks and struck out four. Twins relievers Danny Coulombe, Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran combined for three scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. Duran pitched the ninth to collect his 16th save. The Twins broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Wallner started the scoring opportunity when he drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Gore. Brooks Lee drew a walk in the next at-bat, and Wallner moved to third base on yet another wild pitch by Gore. Buxton delivered with runners on first and third and one out. He hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Wallner and put the Twins on top 1-0. Washington threatened to score in the eighth but could not push a run across. Lile hit a one-out double and swiped third. Jacob Young drew a walk to give Washington runners on first and third with two outs for C.J. Abrams. The Twins' Jax escaped the jam when he got Abrams to fly out to right to end the inning. --Field Level Media
