Trucker who ‘never' buys scratch-offs tries luck on ticket. It leaves him frozen
And with that purchase, he went out of his comfort zone when he bought an Iowa Lottery scratch-off ticket.
'To be honest, I never buy scratch-off tickets,' Marco Gonzalez-Saurez told lottery officials in a June 30 news release. 'Something just said, 'Hey, why don't I just buy one.''
He picked the 'Feeling Lucky?' scratch-off ticket from a Hy-Vee in Windsor Heights, then went home to see if he won.
What he saw — a $150,000 windfall — left him in disbelief
'I just kind of froze, like, 'No way!'' Gonzalez-Suarez told lottery officials. 'Honestly, I didn't believe it. It didn't seem real.'
It wasn't until he scanned the ticket on the lottery app that his win began to feel real, he said.
Now, the truck driver from West Des Moines hopes to use the money toward 'a fun purchase or two' and invest the rest.
The 'Feeling Lucky?' game costs $10 to play. Odds of winning the $150,000 jackpot prize are 1 in 144,850.
Windsor Heights is a western suburb of Des Moines.

Dog Abandoned With Her Puppies Now Overlooked in Shelter With 'No Interest'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A shelter dog, who has known little else but sacrifice and suffering in their life to date, is struggling to find a forever home. When Willow the dog was first found abandoned out in the cold, there was only one thought on her mind: her puppies. "Willow came to us after being found tied up, with her three puppies by her side," Jackie Gonzalez, a volunteer at the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, told Newsweek. "Since then, she's raised her little ones and is now waiting for her own happy ending." Eager to drum up interest in this often-forgotten pup, Gonzalez posted a video appealing for help in rehousing Willow. Gonzalez posted footage of a forlorn-looking Willow, staring off into the distance from within the confines of her kennel to her TikTok @ an onscreen caption explains the shelter has received "no interest" in anyone adopting her. The continued lack of interest in Willow is a source of some frustration to Gonzalez. Having interacted with Willow on a one-on-one basis, she's seen everything she had to offer as a pet. "Willow is a loving girl who enjoys long walks and snuggling up with her favorite people," Gonzalez said. "Sadly, she's often overlooked because she isn't dog-friendly and still needs more positive exposure around other dogs." The video has provided Willow with some much-needed exposure. Writing in the comments section, one viewer said: "She has the name of my souldog who passed away. Someone please save her." Another wrote: "Poor baby. Praying for your forever home!" with a third adding: "I hate to see this." Unfortunately, this kind of scenario isn't all that unusual. The sad reality is that adult dogs like Willow often struggle to get adopted compared to puppies. In 2015, the website Priceonomics conducted a study exploring the most commonly adopted types of dogs and most popular age groups. The research, which was based on adoption data from the website Petfinder, revealed that while 95 percent of puppies listed on the site ended up in new homes, that proportion dropped to 75.5 percent among adult dogs. Willow's struggles with other dogs appear to have played a part. Sadly, that's an issue likely caused by the difficult start to life she has endured. Whatever the case, the experience of doing months without garnering much in the way of adoption interest is having a negative effect. Willow is struggling. That's clear in the video. But things could get even worse. "The longer she waits, the more the stress of kennel life weighs on her," Gonzalez said. "We're starting to see her spark fade, and she deserves so much more than that." Just having one person take a chance on her could be enough to change everything. A 2018 study in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science found just 15 minutes of one-on-one petting was enough to boost the wellbeing of a shelter dog. Willow just needs someone to take a chance on her. Gonzalez said: "Willow would thrive in an active, pet-free home where she can finally feel safe, loved, and free to be herself." Anyone who feels like they may have what it takes to change Willow's life, is encouraged to contact the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California.

Dog in Shelter for Over 365 Days Still Looking for a Forever Home
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An animal shelter from Fresno, California, recently shared a video of their longest-staying canine resident, 2-year-old Zelda, and internet users can't believe that the sweet pup still hasn't found a home. The viral video shared on TikTok earlier in July, under the username @ shows the shepherd mix pup looking sad as she is locked in her kennel, waiting patiently for somebody to choose her. A caption says: "POV [point of view]: you visit an animal shelter and ask to see the dogs who has been there the longest. This is Zelda … This has been her view for 365+ days … "She's watched adopters walk right past her and choose someone else every time. She would need to be the only pet in the home … Please consider giving her a chance …" Jackie Gonzalez, a volunteer at the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, where Zelda is available for adoption, told Newsweek that the dog was dumped in their lobby one day, and has been in their care for over a year. "She was adopted once but returned just three days later. She loves people, is toy-motivated, and eager to please, but she struggles in her kennel, often suckling on her blankets to self-soothe," Gonzalez said. She added that Zelda isn't dog- or cat-friendly, which makes finding her the right home harder. "She needs an active, pet-free home with someone who can give her the exercise and love she craves. She's been overlooked for too long—she deserves a real chance," Gonzalez said. Active dog breeds need about one or two hours of exercise daily, including walks, runs, hikes, or play sessions, so they are best-matched with people who look forward to spending some quality time with their pup. Some of the most-active dog breeds include Border collies, Australian shepherds, Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, Siberian huskies, German shepherds, and Belgian Malinois. Other breeds that are also considered to be among the most active include Jack Russell terriers, vizslas, Dalmatians, Weimaraners, and miniature schnauzers. One user, Sierra, commented: "Sweet babyyy. Someone please give her the life she deserves." Cynn posted: "She's still there?! Please someone foster or adopt. There's no way this sweet baby is still in there." JOlson312 added: "Such a sweet girl. She just wants someone to hug at night."
