Scotland's Angus Gunn keen to find right club to give him World Cup launchpad

The 29-year-old, who was Steve Clarke's number one at Euro 2024, is currently a free agent after Norwich opted not to extend his four-year stint at Carrow Road.
Gunn is weighing up his options for the season ahead and he knows the importance of making the right decision about his future given that Scotland will be aiming to qualify for the World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada in just over a year.
'Obviously, the transfer window has just opened, so that's just started,' he said, speaking at a media conference after joining up with the Scotland squad for the friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein. 'There are a few conversations happening, but I don't want to rush into anything.
'First and foremost, I want to come away and focus on this camp first. Then, I think after that, decisions will be made.
'Obviously, it's definitely a big factor that there's a qualifying campaign coming up for the World Cup in America. That's definitely a big focus for me. It's something that will be in the back of my mind when I make the decision. That's definitely in my thinking.
'There's a lot of factors. Obviously, I'm a bit older now, a bit more experienced and I know the game. I've got a young family as well and I want to look after them.
'At the same time, I've got aspirations in my career and the World Cup is definitely one of them. To reach that would definitely be the pinnacle.'
Gunn expressed sadness last month over the nature of his Norwich departure, but he insisted he is now looking ahead with excitement.
'Yes, I'm over it,' he said. 'It was something that I felt personally they could have handled better. But ultimately, I think the decision was probably the right one from both sides for me to move on and go somewhere else in my career. I'm really excited for it.'
Gunn was number one throughout the Euro 2024 campaign before a minor injury sustained in October paved the way for 42-year-old Craig Gordon to reclaim the gloves for the last six Scotland matches. The Hearts keeper picked up an injury himself towards the end of the season, meaning Gunn – whose last cap came in September – has a chance to re-establish himself.
'Last season I had a few injuries which kept me out of the squad, so that was frustrating,' he said. 'Obviously it's good to see Craig back playing at Hearts. He picked the injury up in the last part of the season, but he had a good spell in the team. Things change quickly in football, so you never really know. Hopefully I can get the two caps this week and keep moving forward.'
Gordon recently extended his contract with Hearts and looks set to continue vying with Gunn for the gloves as he approaches his 43rd birthday.
'It's unbelievable really,' he said of his rival's longevity. 'You don't see many players going that long. It's testament to him and how he's looked after himself and how much hunger he's got to carry on because as you're getting older, the body's going to feel it.
'For him to still have that hunger to keep going, hopefully I've got that in my head going into the latter part of my career.'

South Africa name nine uncapped players in expansive squad

CAPE TOWN, June 5 (Reuters) - Nine uncapped players have been named in an expansive 54-man South Africa squad for the first four of the country's 14 international matches this year. Coach Rassie Erasmus on Thursday retained 31 of the squad that won the 2023 World Cup in a sign of continuity but has also made clear he intended using tests against the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia to try out new prospects. The uncapped players include Northampton Saints eighthman Juarno Augustus and hooker Marnus van der Merwe from Scarlets in Wales plus locally-based prop forwards Neethling Fouche and Asenathi Ntlabakanye, flanks Renzo du Plessis and Vincent Tshituka and utility forward Cobus Wiese, whose brother Jasper is a regular in the squad. The new backs are Sharks centre Ethan Hooker and Ntokozo Makhaza, who has been selected from university rugby without any franchise experience. The squad assembled on Sunday except for players still involved in the closing stages of the United Rugby Championship or English Premiership. 'We are excited to have the luxury of announcing a squad with so much depth and talent,' Erasmus said in a statement. 'Having an expanded squad will not only afford us the opportunity to have productive training sessions, but it will also bode well for the younger players in the group to learn from the senior players, many of whom are Rugby World Cup champions." South Africa used 50 players last season in an attempt to balance the load and build towards the 2027 World Cup in Australia. 'With a few more talented youngsters in this group, we hope that they will learn valuable lessons and stake a strong claim for places in what will be a challenging, yet exciting season,' the coach added. Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane were not considered due to injury. The Springboks will meet the Barbarians in their first encounter on South African soil in Cape Town on June 28 followed by two tests against Italy in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12 respectively and Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19. From August the Springboks play in the Rugby Championship and in November go on a European tour with tests in Italy, France, Ireland and Wales. Trai Hume wants Northern Ireland's young guns to set standard for squad

Hume and his Sunderland team-mate Daniel Ballard have been celebrating earning promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic play-off campaign that ended with victory over Sheffield United at Wembley. And that came at the end of a month in which Conor Bradley received his first Premier League winner's medal with Liverpool and fellow 21-year-old Justin Devenny lifted the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Representing on the big stage 💚🤍 #GAWA @SunderlandAFC | @hume_trai | @dg_ballard — Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) May 24, 2025 Ballard, 25, and Hume, 23, will double the Premier League contingent in Michael O'Neill's squad, something that Hume believes can only help as they look ahead to their World Cup qualifying campaign that starts in September. 'I don't think there's any doubt,' Hume said. 'You're exposing yourself to the best league in the world, so you want to try your best to do well there and if you can, you're going to become a better player because of it. 'Obviously me and Dan are still young, Conor and Justin are still young, so hopefully we can have a lot of years in the Premier League and that will only benefit Northern Ireland going forward. 'I have no doubt there's other players in the squad that will get themselves into the Premier League as well. Obviously it's us four at the minute and hopefully we can try and push the lads and bring them up to the standard that we're going to set.' Northern Ireland are preparing for Saturday's friendly away to Denmark and Tuesday's match at home against Iceland, but their eyes are already on September when they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign with an away double-header against Luxembourg and Germany, with Slovakia also in Group A. Playing in high-pressure games like the Championship play-off final is valuable experience ahead of facing the likes of Germany, and Hume said: 'I think it will help us deal with the atmosphere a bit better. Obviously, the calibre of players will be a lot different. I think we will try our best to deal with that. HUUUUUUUUUUME ❤️ — Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) June 1, 2025 'I think the big games you do play in, you get used to the emotion of it and the challenge of playing in front of the crowd and not getting caught up in the emotion of the game. 'Germany is definitely going to be a lot different than Sheffield United. Like I say, we will just have to try our best to be ready and be focused for it.' Germany are obvious favourites to top the group, with Northern Ireland vying to beat Slovakia and Luxembourg to second place and the play-off spot that would bring. Ballard said they would treat their games against those two nations as cup finals. 'I think we can make a really positive start to the group,' he said. 'I think the games against Luxembourg and Slovakia are going to be really important for us. I think they will all be like cup finals. 'I feel like we have a real opportunity this year to go and put ourselves in a strong spot to qualify.'

Mason Mount told to leave Manchester United and find new club in savage attack'

Mason Mount has endured two injury-ravaged seasons since joining Man Utd from Chelsea, with Old Trafford legend Paul Parker issuing a blunt message over his future at the club under Ruben Amorim Mason Mount has been branded a 'lost boy' and told to leave Manchester United to resurrect his career after two injury-ravaged seasons at Old Trafford. Mount has endured a nightmare time since his £55million move from Chelsea to United in 2023. Injuries have restricted him to just 13 Premier League starts for the Red Devils. The attacking midfielder, who starred for England at the 2022 World Cup, has lost his international place as a result and has seen his career stall since making the move to United. ‌ Against that backdrop, United legend Paul Parker believes it is time for Mount to move on, despite the 26-year-old having got back into the starting line-up towards the end of last season. ‌ "I've said it before, but I just can't ever see him having a key role at Manchester United,' said Parker. "He has no standout qualities and now we're really seeing why Chelsea were happy to let him go. 'He's played a bit because other players have been rested and yes, he's scored, but I haven't seen anything more from him. He's clearly one of those players who would benefit from finding a new club. "I think he needs to figure out who he is as a footballer. What is his identity? He has no identity. Nobody knows what he's actually good at and I don't even think he knows himself. 'He looks like a lost boy out there, so first and foremost he needs to find his identity. Otherwise, he won't succeed at a new club either.' Parker also claimed Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo would be a 'dream signing' for United, who have submitted a £55m bid for the Cameroon international. 'Mbeumo has been absolutely unbelievable,' said Parker, speaking to 'He's had a completely absurd season, and he has only improved since Ivan Toney left the club. What he's done for Brentford is incredible. ‌ 'He owes a lot to Thomas Frank. This is yet another example of why Frank is one of the best managers in the world, because he gets the best out of his players. He's outstanding. 'He would be a brilliant signing for United. A magical signing, because he would be a massive step up from the other players. He would be a dream signing. But does he actually want to leave Brentford? Honestly, I'm not sure. 'It's a fantastic club and if you take away things like money and status, Brentford might just be the best club to play for in the world."
