Israeli Military Apologises Over Wrong India Map After Huge Online Backlash

New Delhi: In a first, the Israel Defense Forces has apologised for posting an incorrect map of India's international boundaries - which wrongly showed Jammu and Kashmir as belonging to Pakistan - on X. The IDF admitted the map "fails to precisely depict borders" but claimed it was only an "illustration of the region". The IDF's post followed tweets by Indian users, many quite furious, pointing out the error and urging the Israeli military to retract the post. Some even tagged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Responding directly to one such tweet, by an X handle called Indian Right Wing Community", the Israel Defense Forces said, "This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologise for any offense caused". This was around 90 minutes after the original post. The first complainant had said: "Now you understand why India remains neutral. In diplomacy, no one's really your friend". This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologize for any offense caused by this image. — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) June 13, 2025 The Indian government has not yet responded to the IDF's wrong map. India has made it clear that J&K and Ladakh, parts of which have been illegally occupied by Pakistan and China for decades, is and always will be an integral part of the country. That sentiment was repeated again by Prime Minister Modi in May, after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Over past several years India and Israel have developed a friendly relationship; in fact, in 2017 Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to visit that country. Delhi is also one of Tel Aviv's biggest trading partners, behind only the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and China, and those trading figures are only set to increase. And India is one of Israel's largest client for military equipment sales. The false map of India's borders, therefore, came as quite a surprise . The map that kicked up this storm was posted on X late Friday evening, as part of a tweet underlining Tel Aviv's perception of Iran as a "global threat". This follows rapidly increasing tensions between the two and raises a new threat of all-out war in the West Asia region; this after the escalation following Israel's response to Hamas' October 7 attacks. "Iran is a global threat. Israel is not the end goal, it's only the beginning. We had no other choice but to act," the Israeli military declared ominously, attaching a map showing West Asia, northern Africa, Europe, and most of Asia, including India with incorrectly drawn borders. This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologize for any offense caused by this image. — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) June 13, 2025 The map had concentric circles of red emanating from Iran, indicating the range of missiles Tehran has and shading over immediate neighbours like Saudi Arabia and then Libya and Ethiopia in Africa, India and China in Asia, and Romania, and Bulgaria in Europe, as well as Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey. The map also drew sharp responses from Indian X users, including one person who tagged Mr Netanyahu and demanded Israel "delete it, correct it, repost it". Another person criticised Israel for having slighted the contribution of Indian soldiers fighting, and dying, to maintain territorial integrity. @IDF please next time upload correct map thank you we are with you 💪🏻🇮🇳 — Gulshan Singh🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 (@gulshan8434) June 13, 2025 Other users pointed to longstanding friendly ties with Tel Aviv. Better u remove that.. India and Israel is a good friend always so plz avoid such things.. And delete it 🙏 — 🇮🇳 Indrani 🇮🇳 (@Anti_Congressi) June 13, 2025 The latest round of Israel-Iran tensions come after the former launched its biggest offensive to stop the latter from making nuclear weapons. Iran responded, according to the Israelis by firing dozens of missiles. Some were intercepted, they said, with help from the United States. The two nations leaders', Mr Netanyahu and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have traded warnings and threats in equal measures, with the latter accusing the former of starting a war. Mr Netanyahu declared to the Iranians that "more is on the way" after the missile strikes by his military.

British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron said she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad on Friday and shared condolences on behalf of her country in the face of the tragic plane crash a day ago and underlined that the UK and India are "working together" to establish facts linked with the accident. The London-bound Air India flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad and burst into a ball of fire on Thursday moments after takeoff. Air India has confirmed that 241 people, including 52 British nationals who were on board the AI171 flight, were killed in the crash. One person, a British citizen, has survived and is currently undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the accident. Overall, at least 265 people, including some on the ground, were killed in the tragedy after the plane crashed into the BJ Medical College complex in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area. Talking to PTI in Ahmedabad, Cameron said, "We have offered consular support to the sole survivor". "I have been here since yesterday, visiting the crash site, visiting the hospital, meeting Prime Minister Modi, meeting the first tirelessly for last 24 hours," she said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the scene of the crash and met the injured at the Ahmedabad civil hospital. He spent around 20 minutes at the crash site. Asked about her meeting with the PM, she said, "I passed condolence from His Majesty the King and the Queen, from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and from our Foreign Secretary, all of whom are really shocked by what they have seen, and want to offer support." Besides 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals were on board the flight that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport. "My priority here, at the British Deputy High Commission in Ahmedabad, is to make sure British nationals and their families get the support they need. And, that is why we have 24x7 hotlines for people and their families to reach out," the UK envoy added. In the early hours of Friday, Cameron posted on X that she and her team have "visited the crash site" and hospital in Ahmedabad and also shared consular helpline details. "Colleagues in UK & India are working around the clock to gather information and support British nationals affected," she said. Later, in another post on X, Cameron said, "I met with Prime Minister @narendramodi this morning. We shared condolences in the face of this tragic accident, and I offered my thanks for the work of tireless first responders here in Ahmedabad." "The UK and India are working together to establish the facts. We stand ready to support the families and friends of affected British Nationals - please consult our Travel Advice for updates and contact us on the 24/7 consular helpline: +91 (11) 24192100 (in India) +44 (0) 20 7008 5000 (in the UK)," the British High Commissioner wrote. Investigators on Friday recovered a black box of the fateful flight. "My thought and prayers are with everybody affected by this crash, particulary those who had loved ones either on the plane or on the ground. But, also it is heartwarming to see the response from both UK and Indian authorities as they are coming together to this crash," Cameron said. The British national flag flew at half-mast at the British High Commission in Delhi to mourn the loss of lives in the plane crash. The British High Commission in India on Thursday said it was working with local authorities to urgently establish facts about the plane crash and provide support. In its post, the High Commission also shared a link to its travel advisory. On Friday, she also visited Akshardham Temple in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar. "It was a sad privilege to offer my prayers at Swaminarayan Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar today. My thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of all those impacted by the devastating plane crash that happened yesterday, particularly communities here in Gujarat and back in the UK," Cameron said in another X post.
