Where are the Malcolm In The Middle stars now? As Frankie Muniz reunites with TV parents Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek after 20 years - a look at the varying fates of the show's cast
Frankie Muniz sent fans wild on Tuesday as he reunited with TV parents Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek on the set of the Malcolm In The Middle (MITM) reboot.
The actor, 39, had sparked concern earlier in the week when he admitted he was at a 'mental and emotional' low but looked in good spirits as he posed for a sweet snap with his co-stars.
While it's been two decades since their beloved sitcom MITM came to an end in 2006, fans will soon be treated to a reboot after Disney Plus green lighted a limited four-episode series.
The story will revolve around Malcolm's parents Hal and Lois who demand that he and his daughter attend their 40th anniversary party.
Several of the show's stars will be returning to reprise their roles, including Christopher Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese), but not all the show's beloved stars will be back, including Erik Per Sullivan, who played Malcolm's younger brother Dewey, but quit acting in 2010.
So where are the stars of Malcolm In The Middle now?
Frankie Muniz (Malcolm)
Frankie was just a teenager when he rocketed to fame in 2000 as the titular star of MITM, playing a a child genius with an IQ of 165 growing up in a dysfunctional family as one of four brothers.
By 2003 he was dubbed one of 'Hollywood's most bankable teens' having appeared in a string of movies including Big Fat Liar and Agent Cody Banks.
Yet when his sitcom came to an end three years later, he expressed a desire to leave traditional Hollywood film roles behind, saying: 'Growing up has never scared me until last year. I started thinking about getting older, being an adult, and it scared me.
'Hopefully things will work out in my career. If they don't, then it was never meant to be.'
While he continued to work on films and TV shows he didn't achieve the same level of fame he had as a child and he soon put his acting career on hold to pursue racing.
After making a name for himself on the circuit, last year Frankie revealed he was becoming a NASCAR racer at the age of 38.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Frankie said of the shock move: 'I don't want to say it's a long time coming, but this has been a dream of mine for forever...
'I wanted to do it. I grew up watching NASCAR. I was a huge fan, but it's not something I necessarily thought that I'd ever get the opportunity to do. I want people to know that I've literally dedicated my life to this.'
He added: 'The kid from Malcolm in the Middle is racing in NASCAR. You know what I mean? And that's what people say, but I am. I did it.'
As well as racing, Frankie was briefly a drummer for a band called You Hang Up from 2012 until 2014 and appeared on Dancing with the Stars and the Australian edition of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
Frankie has faced several health issues over the years, including nine concussions as well as mini-strokes which he recently revealed were migraines auras following an official diagnosis.
He has also suffered an assortment of injuries during his time as a professional race car driver, such as a broken back.
Jane Kaczmarek (Lois)
In 2009 she filed for divorce from fellow actor and The West Wing star Bradley Whitford after 17 years of marriage (pictured at the 2005 Primetime Emmy Awards)
After MITM ended, Jane took on a new sitcom role alongside Ted Danson, starring in Help Me Help You, but it was cancelled after just one season (pictured in 2019)
Jane earned three Golden Globe nominations and seven Primetime Emmy nominations playing frazzled mother Lois in the hit sitcom.
Prior to landing her breakout role she appeared on many television shows in recurring and guest-starring roles such as Frasier and Cybill
Jane was also a regular on the first eight episodes of the Showtime run of The Paper Chase, as Connie Lehman.
After MITM ended, Jane took on a new sitcom role alongside Ted Danson, starring in Help Me Help You, but it was cancelled after just one season.
While she continued to work in acting she made sure to prioritise family, admitting her demanding job on MITM had stopped her from spending as much time with her children as she would have liked.
Jane previously admitted: 'My daughter Frances once told me that the best news I could give her was that 'Malcolm' had been canceled. She screamed with joy the day they pulled the plug.'
In 2009 she filed for divorce from fellow actor and The West Wing star Bradley Whitford after 17 years of marriage.
Jane reunited with co-star Bryan in 2013 to film a hilarious alternate ending for his gritty drama Breaking Bad.
Released on DVD, the scene showed Bryan reprising his MITM character Hal, and waking up to discover that the entire TV series and the Walter White role had been Hal's nightmare, with Jane on hand as Lois to comfort him.
Most recently, she appeared in one episode of the 2023 TV series, The Changeling.
Bryan Cranston (Hal)
He previously revealed he would be taking a break from acting for a period of at least six months in 2026 to spend more time with his wife (pictured in March)
Arguably the most successful of the MITM cast, Bryan's established acting career has seen him bag including six Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and two Tony Awards
Yet it was role as loveable father Hal in Malcolm In The Middle that saw him first gain prominence.
After the series came to an end he landed the lead role of Walter White in the television series Breaking Bad, for which he gained widespread acclaim.
His other notable works include a role in the Steven Spielberg film Saving Private Ryan.
In 2015 he earned nominations for the Academy Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for portraying Dalton Trumbo in the Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo.
Earlier this year it was announced that Bryan would return to the stage in a Ivo van Hove directed production of Arthur Miller's All My Sons.
The consummate leading man previously won an Tony for his 2014 performance as former US President Lyndon B Johnson in All They Way.
While he has signed on for the play and the MITM reboot, he previously revealed he would be taking a break from acting for a period of at least six months in 2026 to spend more time with his wife.
Clearing up any confusion, he posted on Instagram: 'I am not retiring. What I am going to do is hit the pause button for a year after I reach my 70th birthday in 2026. Holy c**p - 70!'
'I'm not even sure what 'pausing' means entirely, but at this moment,' he admitted. 'I think it means that by taking a year off it will provide several things;'
Bryan went on to describe the 'pause' as a way to 'reset my career.'
'I could not be more grateful and thankful for such opportunities,' he shared, before elaborating even more about why he will be temporarily stepping away.
'I feel as though I'm beginning to run out of fresh ideas in how to play characters that I'm being offered. So exploring a more expanded life experience will give me the chance to replenish my soul and prepare for whatever roles I may be afforded in a more authentic way,' he explained.
Christopher Masterson (Francis)
Christopher rose to fame as the trouble-making oldest brother Francis in MITM, having been sent off to military school for misbehaving.
As well as his role in the sitcom, Christopher landed parts in MTV's Wuthering Heights and White Collar as well as a supporting role in Scary Movie 2.
Yet he pulled back from acting in recent years and has focused on his new career as a DJ.
In 2021, he welcomed a baby girl with his wife Yolanda Pecoraro.
Chris comes from a family of actors and is the brother of That 70s Show star Danny Masterson, and the maternal half-brother of The Walking Dead's Alanna Masterson and Last Man Standing's Jordan Masterson.
All four siblings are Scientologists and Christopher used to date their fellow Scientologist Laura Prepon, who acted with Danny on That '70s Show.
The Masterson family hit headlines in 2020 when Danny was charged in 2020 with forcibly raping three women in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003 when they were a part of the Scientology church. He pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
Danny was ultimately found guilty of two counts of rape in May 2023, while the third count of rape resulted in a hung jury. In September 2023, he was ordered to serve 30 years to life in prison.
Last year, Danny was denied bail pending due to fears he would try to run.
Justin Berfield (Reese)
After the series came to an end, Justin moved behind the camera and began working as the Chief Creative Officer of production company Virgin Produced (pictured in February)
Justin began his acting career at the tender age of five when he landed a Folgers coffee commercial - going on to appear in several more American adverts in childhood.
Yet it was role in MITM that proved to be his breakthrough, with Justin starring as Reese, Malcom's impulsive and dimwitted older brother.
After the series came to an end, Justin moved behind the camera and began working as the Chief Creative Officer of production company Virgin Produced.
Speaking about his role, he told Variety in 2010: 'We are developing and producing films and television shows that are far from traditional. We aren't afraid to push the envelope with content.'
Speaking to Agoura Hills Patch a year later, Justin explained what inspired him to make the transition from acting to producing.
He said: 'I realised that I had been on two shows that syndicated to over 100 episodes and that I felt fulfilled as an actor and decided to try my hand at producing.
'I think people constantly are looking for fulfilment, and nothing is ever good enough, but I feel fortunate enough to have had the journey I have had so far.'
Talking about the difference between acting and producing, he added: 'They're both unique in their own ways, but I'm enjoying what I'm doing and where I'm at right now.
'It's a whole new level of stress. It's a different kind of stress, but they're both rewarding.'
Justin has two children with his wife Liza Almeida, whom he married in 2017.
Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey)
The former child star, who hasn't been publicly photographed since 2007, opted to leave Hollywood in the 2000s in favour of a more private life (pictured 2006)
Erik shot to fame playing Malcolm's troublesome little brother Dewey between the ages of eight and 14.
The star, now aged 33, went landed more acting roles during the show's run, getting parts in Joe Dirt, Wendigo, Unfaithful, The King of Queens, Finding Nemo, Christmas with the Kranks and Come On Over.
In 2010 he also took on the voice role of Timmy in Twelve.
But in recent years he stepped away from the limelight and hasn't been seen on any TV or film since the Noughties.
Erik is also the only member of the main cast who will not be returning for the show's upcoming reboot on Disney+.
Instead, his role has been recast with actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping in to fill the gap.
While his co-stars continued their careers in entertainment, Erik pursued higher education and has largely stayed out of the public eye.
He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Victorian literature at a university in Massachusetts.
Although Erik has stayed out of the spotlight for years, his TV mum Jane gave an update on him last year.
In an interview with Malcolm France, Jane revealed that Erik was doing 'very well.'
'He's doing very well. He did Malcolm for seven years, he started at seven, he ended at 14. He wasn't interested in acting, at all,' she said of his different path.
She added: 'He goes to school at a very prestigious American university. He loves Charles Dickens.
'He's doing graduate work in Victorian literature. I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world, it's not for everyone.'
Craig Lamar Traylor (Stevie)
For seven glorious seasons, Craig played Malcolm's asthmatic best friend Stevie who was known for his heavy breathing and goody two shoes attitude
Earlier this year he briefly revived his acting career, taking on a minor role alongside Frankie in sci-thriller film Renner which premiered in February

Earlier this year he briefly revived his acting career, taking on a minor role in sci-thriller film Renner which premiered in February.
Through his role as 'neighbour' he was able to reunite with Frankie, who took on the titular role in the film.
Speaking to MUSE TV at the premiere, Craig said he was excited to be back in the film industry and reconnect with Frankie.
He shared: 'It has been a while since I've been around and in this scene so this has been a good opportunity for me to come back and see some familiar faces and be in the art again.
'Me and Frankie spent our whole childhoods together I think rekindling that was my favourite part.'
Speaking of his role, he added: 'I'm in the apartment building I'm kind of a cool guy but I can't give too much away as my part kind of is pivotal for how the rest of the film goes'.
It is currently unknown if he will appear in the MITM reboot.

When does Alien: Earth drop? Everything we know about the new sci-fi series
Something gross is coming to our screens. Landing on 13 August, the first two episodes of the upcoming sci-fi horror series Alien:Earth will be available to stream on Disney+. A prequel to Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien, there will be eight episodes landing in total, with the first two premiering on the release date, and new episodes dropping every Wednesday. The first TV series of the Alien franchise, Alien:Earth is set in the year 2120. Wendy, played by Don't Worry Darling's Sydney Chandler, breaks new ground as the first humanoid robot with human consciousness. But when an extraterrestrial vessel crashes into Earth, Wendy and a team of soldiers go looking for signs of life and find something terrible within. No prizes for guessing what that is. While we have a couple of months before the series lands, the official trailer teases some of the plot points. The most chilling quote in the trailer is that 'The ship collected five different life forms from the darkest corners of the universe.' It's terrifying to think, but it seems the team will have to tackle more than just the xenomorph we know from the Alien franchise. On the creative and production team is Noah Hawley (the screen writer behind major series including Fargo and Legion), Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Joseph Iberti, Dana Gonzales and Clayton Krueger, while cast members include Alex Lawther from The End of the F***ing World and Black Mirror, Kit Young from The Beautiful Game, Timothy Olyphant from Fargo and The Mandalorian), The Babadook's Essie Davis, and Adarsh Gourav from White Tigers. Where can I watch Alien: Earth in the UK? While the series will premiere on August 12 on FX and Hulu in the US, it will launch in the UK and Ireland on 13 August on Disney+. When it premieres, we'll get two episodes, then episodes will drop every Wednesday. How to sign up for Disney+ Disney+ is a paid subscription and costs £4.99 per month. Unlike Amazon and some other streaming services, there isn't a free trial, which means you need to commit to one month of the service, but it's worth keeping in mind that you can cancel your subscription at any time. That said, you might not want to. Disney+ is home to some of the most talked-about shows at the moment, such as The Bear and Star Wars series, Andor. There's also a host of family favourites, such as The Simpsons and animated Disney films from Frozen to Encanto.

'You'll never replace Cilla': Blind Date fans reveal true feelings about reboot
Iconic British TV show Blind Date is rumoured to be returning, and Metro readers have shared their dream presenters. The game show, which was hosted by Cilla Black, saw one hopeful single introduced to three members of the opposite sex with the aim of securing a date with one of them by the end of the show. The twist? The three potential suitors were hidden behind a sliding wall. The contestant asked three questions of the hidden singletons and used their answers to decide who to take on a date. Blind Date aired between 1985 and 2003 on ITV, though it had a brief revival on Channel 5 for two years in 2017, when Paul O'Grady took on hosting duties. Now, according to The Sun, the reality show is set to get a new home on Disney Plus, with an insider saying: 'Although there's likely to be some modern twists, the bosses very much want to keep the essence of the original. 'There'll be key elements returning, including the famous sliding wall. 'Plus, there will be a prize up for grabs of a wedding package, which echoes Cilla's famous gag whenever couples had enjoyed a successful date, and she used to ask, 'Do I need to buy an 'at for the wedding?'' It's not the first time reports of a Blind Date revival have surfaced, but so far nothing has been confirmed by Disney Plus. That hasn't stopped the rumour mill, however, and producers are said to be eyeing up Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall to host. We asked Metro readers to tell us who they want to see front a potential Blind Date revival, and a few notable names were mentioned several times. Malcolm Edward Young said: 'Alan Carr would be great, I can just hear him saying surprise surprise chuck.' Francis Linsey echoed: 'Alan Carr would be fab, I would definitely watch it if he was to present it,' while Jenni Hodgkinson added, 'Alan Carr would be good. Needs someone funny.' Alan Carr and Cilla Black appeared on screen together when she appeared on the 2009 Christmas special of his talk show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man. Rachael Espin said the comedian would be a great replacement for original host Cilla, writing: 'Alan Carr or Rylan Clark because I think they'd do Cilla Black justice'. And she wasn't the only person to tip former X Factor star Rylan for the role… On Reddit, Iam_The_Lizard_Queen wrote: 'Rylan was actually the first person I thought of, do actually think he'd be good for it'. Madamemercury1993 echoed: 'Rylan would be good! He's genuinely a funny guy fueled off innuendo. But genuinely seems to like interacting with regular folks.' Meanwhile, Unusual_Rope7110 said: 'Rylan would work well' and Debra Bishop added, 'Rylan Clarke would be hilarious'. Recently, Rylan was a Eurovision commentator alongside Scott Mills, and he has also presented Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two, Supermarket Sweep, The One Show and This Morning. Another popular presenter du jour, Bake Off and This Morning's Alison Hammond was touted by fans as the perfect Blind Date presenter. Wesley Bear wrote: 'She is hilarious without trying to be. And would certainly fit the ethos of the show I believe.' Gordon Smith added: 'I think Allison Hammond is almost a shoo-in,' while Tony Finch simply said, 'Can only be Alison Hammond!' Alison's infectious laugh and down-to-earth personality have made her a firm favourite among TV fans since first appearing on Big Brother in 2002. And funnily enough, she previously revealed she almost chose appearing on Blind Date over the Channel 4 show. The Chase's Bradley Walsh received heaps of recommendations from Blind Date fans, with Jessica Jane Peers praising the presenter as 'completely hard to dislike'. He's hosted the enduringly popular ITV game show The Chase since 2009, and in 2024, it won the TV Choice award and NTA for Best Game Show. Many suggested Bradley Walsh should present Blind Date in tandem with one of his peers. Rachel Slucock said: 'Bradley Walsh or David Walliams, both would be hilarious,' and Anjii Cooper wrote: 'Bradley Walsh or Lee Mack, they would have a laugh'. Melle John added: 'It can only be Bradley Walsh or Stephen Mulhern. Yes they do get all the jobs. Cause they're good.' Speaking of Stephen Mulhern, the presenter was named by several Metro readers as their ideal Blind Date host. He's previously presented Dancing on Ice and Britain's Got More Talent, and is no stranger to a game show reboot, as the presenter of revived versions of Catchphrase and Deal or No Deal. Recommending him for Blind Date, Dave Butler said: 'Stephen Mulhurn, funny man BUT knows where to draw the line.' Victoria Hamilton echoed: 'Stephen Mulhern would be amazing at this,' while Tracy Purches suggested, 'Stephen Mulhern with the narrator from Come Dine with Me as 'our Graham''. 'Our Graham' was how Cilla referred to Graham Skidmore, who provided the voice-over for Blind Date. He died in 2021 at age 90. Jane McDonald, who fans may recognise from ITV's Loose Women as well as her Channel 5 travel show, Cruising with Jane McDonald, is another popular choice. Anne-Sarah Cassidy said: 'Jane McDonald would do a brilliant job,' and Tina Smith echoed, 'Jane McDonald would be great'. Carol Davies simply said: 'I think Jane McDonald would fit the part'. Jane has most recently hosted the British Soap Awards on ITV on June 5. And plenty of other popular presenters were named by Blind Date fans too. June Rae Elvidge said: 'First I thought Graham Norton, but for a laugh I thought how about Jeremy Clarkson? Or even Richard Hammond…it might be worth a giggle'. IshamaelSunSoar added: 'Davina [McCall] would be my first choice but would like to see Holly [Willoughby] come back and do more TV too'. And Paul Stables wrote: 'Claudia Winkleman, love her sense of humour on Strictly, she makes that show. You'll never replace Cilla though, that scouse/northern humour.' Paul certainly isn't the only Blind Date fan who felt no one could live up to the iconic Cilla Black, who passed away age 72 in 2015. Carl Turner said: 'No one is good enough to replace OUR CILLA… She was everything that kept us glued to our TV screens every Saturday night'. More Trending Samantha Cunningham agreed, writing: 'Can't imagine anybody being as good as our Cilla'. Meanwhile, others were keen to see fresh faces host the revival. Cindy Sanderson said: 'Someone totally new!! Get some open auditions out there, we need fresh new talent!' View More » And Karen King echoed: 'A fresh new up and coming presenter. Give them a chance to show their talent. Stop giving the new roles to already set up presenters.' Got a story? Media giant Canal+ strikes settlement with French tax authorities
Shares in Canal+ rose on Friday after the London-listed media conglomerate settled a tax dispute with the French Government. The StudioCanal owner, which listed in London last December, told investors it expects no impact on cash from the settlement. French authorities had accused the Paris-based company, formerly a subsidiary of telecoms giant Vivendi, of incorrectly applying lower rates of value-added tax on some of its services. Canal+ had warned that the dispute could have potentially cost it around €655million. It anticipates recording some exceptional charges in its first-half results, but told investors the settlement 'removes uncertainty regarding the possibility of a material additional disbursement'. Alongside this, the firm upheld its full-year outlook on turnover and earnings before nasties, with the latter expected to total approximately €515million. It came as Canal+ said it was on track to achieve organic growth this year because of a 'material one-off cash improvement'. But the business cautioned that this would be offset by the end of some contracts and the closure of terrestrial television channel C8 in February. The group's distribution deal with Disney+ ended at the start of 2025, resulting in its roughly 27 million subscribers losing access to the streaming service. In late February, C8 shut down after regulators revoked its broadcasting licence following accusations of promoting fake news and conspiracy theories. Consequently, its first-quarter turnover fell by 2.5 per cent to €1.55billion, although organic sales increased by 1.5 per cent, thanks to a robust performance by its film studios division. StudioCanal's recent box office successes include the animated sequel Paddington In Peru, horror film The Monkey, romantic drama We Live in Time, and comedy Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. In a rare victory for the UK capital, Canal+ went public on the London Stock Exchange last year after Vivendi shareholders voted to spin off the group. It debuted with an estimated £2.5billion valuation, making it the LSE's largest flotation in two years. Just 45 businesses applied to join the main London market in 2024, compared to 59 the year before and 111 in 2022, according to the Financial Conduct Authority. By comparison, 88 companies delisted or transferred their primary listing from the LSE, the largest number since the global financial crisis in 2008, figures from EY have shown. Canal+ shares rose 7.1 per cent to 215p on Friday morning, although this is far below its initial public offering price of 290p.
