I tried sleep coaching on Galaxy Watch 8. Here's why you should too

I've used many of the best smartwatches, but when it comes to sleep, few companies offer the same Sleep detail and insight that Samsung does. Sleep has been core to the Samsung Health strategy since the Galaxy S4 in 2013, which introduced basic sleep tracking and led to the behemoth that is Samsung Health today.
Many companies offer some level of sleep tracking, but fewer offer detailed analysis, and none provide the same detail as Samsung does. A key differentiator of Samsung Health's Sleep offering is Sleep Coaching, and the use of Sleep animals to offer relatable and actionable insights.

While reviewing the Galaxy Watch 8 Classic over the past few weeks, I tried Samsung's sleep coaching, and within a couple of weeks, my sleep animal has already improved. Having also used Samsung's Sleep Coaching in the past, I'm also surprised by how much my sleep quality has improved over the past few years.
Why Sleep Animals are a great concept
Samsung first debuted Sleep Animals in a software update to the Galaxy Watch 4 in early 2022, but the earlier version lacked some of the core insights and impact that the latest version provides.
Although the insights have improved, the Sleep Animals and their core meaning haven't changed. There are eight in total, split across four levels, with several factors that determine which animal and level you are. The goal is to improve your sleep and raise it to Level 4, otherwise known as the Lion.
Here are the eight animals and their core interpretations:
Level 4: Lion — healthy sleep patterns, consistent timing, sleeping deeply enough
— healthy sleep patterns, consistent timing, sleeping deeply enough Level 3: Penguin — Getting enough sleep and a consistent time, but waking up too often
— Getting enough sleep and a consistent time, but waking up too often Level 3: Walrus — Sleeping at consistent times, but not long enough or waking up often
— Sleeping at consistent times, but not long enough or waking up often Level 3: Mole — Getting enough sleep without waking often, but at inconsistent times
— Getting enough sleep without waking often, but at inconsistent times Level 2: Deer — Sleeping at regular times but tossing and turning or waking up often
— Sleeping at regular times but tossing and turning or waking up often Level 2: Hedgehog — Sleeping for long enough, but spending too much time awake
— Sleeping for long enough, but spending too much time awake Level 2: Alligator — Not enough total sleep, waking up too often, and inconsistent timing
— Not enough total sleep, waking up too often, and inconsistent timing Level 1: Shark — Lack of sleep time, tossing and turning throughout, and inconsistent timing
Many of those characteristics will be familiar to most people, and as I've found, Samsung's Sleep Coaching is surprisingly effective at gamifying your sleep.
Why Sleep Animals are impactful
I like Samsung's sleep animals because they help users understand the various sleep metrics the Galaxy Watch 8 can measure.
Rather than having to look at data and deduce findings yourself, Samsung's Sleep Coaching and Animals make it easy for anyone to understand how they're sleeping, and crucially, how to improve their sleep. Sleep Coaching focuses on improving your sleep holistically, rather than trying to focus your attention on one specific metric.
As part of the sleep coaching, you receive daily actionable insights on various areas to focus on. These aren't specific metrics but rather core themes such as sleeping at a consistent time, getting consistent sleep, and tips for relaxing before you sleep. Each of these includes a video that briefly explains why this metric matters and how to improve it further.
Sleep Coaching is a great way to help users understand why they should improve their sleep, set a goal to achieve (in the form of a sleep animal), and learn how to achieve that goal. As you progress through the levels, it provides a welcome sense of achievement, while also improving a key metric around your health.
Meet my old, and new, Sleep Animals
When I tested my Sleep Animal in December 2023, I was the Shark as each key characteristic described me. I slept infrequently and for short periods, was always tired, and generally felt lethargic in daily life.
I'm testing my sleep animal now; I've made considerable progress and have now achieved Penguin status. Some of this is due to actionable insights provided by the various Samsung wearables I've used over the past couple of years. However, all of the improvement is due to the underlying knowledge about sleep learned from Samsung Health.
Had you asked me, I would have guessed that I'm either a deer or a mole when asleep, but the penguin result has surprised me. It's also inspired me to achieve Lion status, and I'm eager to see how long it takes to reach this milestone. Given I'm fairly concerned about my sleep, hopefully this means I'll sleep more deeply and better as well.
Why you should try the Galaxy Watch 8 series
Any of Samsung's recent Galaxy Watch wearables should feature Sleep Coaching in some form, but if you want the most detailed data — and therefore, the best insights — you'll want to consider the Galaxy Watch 8 or Galaxy Watch 8 Classic.
Both of Samsung's new wearables deliver the best Galaxy Watch experience to date. Alongside the accurate heart rate measurements and AI health insights from the Galaxy Watch 7, the Galaxy Watch 8 series also includes vascular load monitoring while sleeping, which further enhances the quality of the sleep report and the insights that follow.
There are also new bedtime recommendations, which directly impact the Energy Score feature from the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch Ultra from last year. Similar to the latter, combining the Galaxy Watch 8 series with a Galaxy Ring allows Samsung Health to determine which data stream has less noise and is therefore more reliable.
Samsung's Sleep Coaching is one of a kind
The biggest surprise in Samsung's Sleep Coaching is the detail and value of the insights provided within the app. Devices like the Oura Ring or Whoop band both offer excellent insights, but they both require a subscription payment. Samsung delivers all of this for free and has committed to keeping these features free in the future.
Meanwhile, both Apple and Google have improved the Sleep insights and reporting provided in the Apple Watch Series 10 and Pixel Watch 3, but it remains to be seen whether either chooses to copy Samsung in the future. If they do — perhaps starting with the Pixel Watch 4 next month, or the Apple Watch Series 11 the month after — I hope the insights are as impactful as Samsung Health.

One in five American adults complain of obstructive sleep apnea symptoms in one way or another. This disease is now becoming more recognized, and more awareness is being brought to obstructive sleep apnea, as this can lead to significant long-term consequences, such as right heart failure, cor pulmonale, essential hypertension, or atrial fibrillation untreated. Our mainstay is usually diet, weight loss, and once these fail, we then place a patient on a PAP machine. This is usually a noninvasive mechanical ventilator, whether it's a BiPAP, a CPAP, an AVAPS machine, or even auto-CPAP. These can help patients get the comfortable sleep that they need; however, this has been associated with some issues, such as anxiety and claustrophobia, as the mask can preclude this. The FDA has now recently approved Zepbound for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea patients that do meet criteria with a diagnosis of morbid obesity or hypertension associated with a diagnosis of sleep apnea, defined with a sleep study, with apnea-hypopnea index greater than five. The FDA has also approved Inspire, which is a device that can be implanted and can control the hypoglossal nerve, which can decrease the obstruction that is associated with sleep apnea.

Fitbit has announced it has improved how sleep tracking works in its wearables. A member of the Fitbit team posted over at the company's community forums about changes made to sleep tracking. And they're already in action. The aim is to make Fitbits' sleep tracking more accurate by noticing more moments of wakefulness overnight. Fitbit's moderator noted owners of Fitbits may already have noticed their sleep score changing a little, and getting worse. 'If you've noticed that your sleep stages, sleep time and awake time have changed recently, you're seeing our latest improvement in action," says the Fitbit spokesperson. 'You may see your awake time increase slightly as we now capture brief awakenings the old system missed.' While Fitbit already had among the better mainstream wearable sleep tracking anyway, I find missing wakeful moments one of the most frustrating elements of sleep tracking. After all, you can't really tell whether you were in a REM or deep sleep stage at a particular time. But you can tell whether you were awake or not. Even now I find high-end Garmin watches often miss these moments, sometimes even when they involve a brief trip to the toilet. Fitbit has not specified which models get this upgrade, suggesting it's a change to the underlying algorithmic system used to translate sensor data into sleep tracking. And therefore the change should apply to all supported models. Some users over at the Fitbit Community forums are complaining about missing sleep data, though, including the loss of historical data. Fitbit is yet to reply to these queries, but I have asked a Fitbit representative for more information on the issue, and if the change does indeed apply to all supported Fitbit wearables. The Future Of Fitbits There's more too. Fitbit says this algorithmic tweak is just the beginning. 'This is the first step in a series of upcoming improvements to improving our sleep tracking,' says Fitbit. We may learn more later this month. On August 20, Fitbit owner Google is holding a Pixel 10 launch event, at which we may also hear about the next Pixel Watch. And it could well benefit from the same sleep tracking changes Fitbit references. Then again, a recent report suggested the Pixel Watch 4, alongside the upcoming Pixel Buds 2a and Pixel 10 Fold Pro, may be delayed until October. Of course, this does not necessarily mean Google won't talk about these devices later this month, though.

Samsung is now tracking employee office attendance

Samsung is one of many companies that have been pushing for employees to return to the office fulltime. However, now the brand is taking RTO efforts in the U.S. one step further with a tool that tracks attendance for a group in its semiconductor business. In an internal email, seen by Business Insider, Samsung informed employees about the new compliance tracking tool. 'This tool will provide each Manager with visibility to the number of days & time in building metrics for each team member,' the email said. It continued, 'This will ensure that team members are fulfilling their expectation regarding in office work – however that is defined with their business leader – as well as guarding against instances of lunch/coffee badging.' In 2023 the brand embraced a global hybrid work model, rolling out 500 new jobs. While the specifics varied, the majority of the postings (58.3%) included the ability to work from home at least part of the work week. The brand also gave employees in the company's corporate offices in South Korea one Friday off a month. However, last April, after posting lower than expected sales, the brand asked its corporate executives to begin working six days a week in order to 'inject a sense of crisis' into its workforce. 'Considering that performance of our major units, including Samsung Electronics Co., fell short of expectations in 2023, we are introducing the six-day work week for executives to inject a sense of crisis and make all-out efforts to overcome this crisis,' a Samsung Group executive told the Korea Economic Daily. This May, Samsung asked employees to begin returning to the office full time. The following month, it updated employees on the RTO initiative. 'We are already experiencing increased foot traffic daily, with more cars in the parking lot and hungry mouths in our cafeterias on Fridays, to name just a few signs,' Samsung said in an email viewed by BI. At the time, Samsung also noted that it was developing a tool to track attendance. Employee tracking might sound offbeat, but workplace surveillance is on the rise. According to a recent ExpressVPN survey, 74% of U.S. employers now use online tracking tools to monitor work activities. That includes real-time screen tracking (59%) and web browsing logs (62%). Likewise, 61% use AI -powered analytics to measure productivity and around 67% collect biometric data to monitor things like behavior and attendance. Still, that doesn't mean it's popular among employees or feels all that ethical. While most companies (three out of four) use biometric surveillance, only 22% of employees know they're being monitored, according to the same report. Likewise, 17% of employees said they'd be 'very likely' to resign over workplace surveillance. Another 32% said they'd strongly consider it. It's unclear how Samsung's new tracking tool will work, how closely employees will be monitored, and how many employees will be impacted. Fast Company reached out to the brand but did not hear back by the time of publication. Samsung told employees they will find out more about the tracking system soon. 'Additional information regarding the new tool will be made available to Managers this month,' the email to employees said.
