KUALA LUMPUR: Southeast Asia's manufacturing, automation, and engineering sectors converged today as Metaltech and Automex 2025 officially opened its doors at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec). Now in its 29th edition, the event continues to lead the charge in smart, sustainable manufacturing with the region's largest showcase of advanced technologies, automation solutions, and next-generation innovations. Organised by Informa Markets Malaysia, this year's edition reaches new heights with the co-location of the Advanced Machinery and Engineering Summit (Ames) 2025, an initiative by the Machinery and Engineering Industries Federation (MEIF). This strategic collaboration strengthens the link between technological innovation and policy discourse, further accelerating industrial transformation across the region. 'MEIF has long supported Metaltech and Automex as a committed industry partner. That continuity has deepened our understanding of the challenges, shifts, and emerging needs of the sector,' said MEIF president Mac Ngan Boon. 'We now launch Ames, not to duplicate what already exists, but to create space for focused dialogue, sharper insight, and coordinated action.' The ceremony was officiated by Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry's (Miti) Deputy Secretary General (Industry) Datuk Mohd Hanafi Sakri, who praised the dual event format as both 'practical and symbolic.' 'It reflects a broader shift we are witnessing - where industrial transformation is no longer confined to technical implementation or policy frameworks alone - but where both must be designed and delivered together,' he said in his opening address. Themed 'Sustainable Manufacturing: From Smart Solutions to AI Innovations,' Metaltech and Automex 2025 features over 1,500 exhibitors and brands from 40 countries, including national groups and pavilions from Germany, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Singapore. With more than 5,000 advanced technologies on display, including CNC machinery, robotics, AI, IoT, smart sensors, and energy-efficient manufacturing systems, the event is expected to draw over 20,000 trade visitors across four days. In a keynote speech at Ames 2025, MIDF Berhad chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat, called attention to the financial tools and partnerships that can bring industrial innovation to life. 'These are not just loans - they are investments into the future of Malaysian and regional industries,' he said. 'MIDF supports this national agenda by empowering SMEs and manufacturers across key sectors - including machinery, engineering, and automation - to adopt modern, advanced technologies and upgrade their capabilities.' He also underscored the importance of aligning financing with the goals of NIMP 2030 and Industrial Revolution 4.0. 'We are seeing a fundamental change in how industries operate, driven by automation, data, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. 'These transformations are reshaping global supply chains and redefining industrial competitiveness - and this is something we should not miss out on.' Informa Markets Malaysia country general manager Gerard Leeuwenburgh further emphasised the role of sustainability in shaping future industry standards. 'Sustainability is no longer a trend – it is a necessity. From energy-efficient machinery and low-waste production methods to sustainable material sourcing and circular design, the innovations we are seeing across the show floor prove that going green is not just good for the planet – but for business as well.' Since its inception, Metaltech and Automex has evolved into a cornerstone of the regional industrial calendar, attracting more than 400,000 industry professionals and generating millions in trade value. With the debut of Ames 2025, the platform takes another leap - bringing policy, practice, and progress under one roof. This year's exhibition features live product demonstrations, technical seminars, and knowledge-sharing forums. Topics range from sustainable manufacturing practices and energy optimisation to digital transformation for SMEs and AI integration. 'The machinery and engineering sector is the enabling layer for advanced manufacturing, energy-efficient processes, and industrial resilience,' Hanafi concluded. 'We at MITI are committed to supporting these efforts - by aligning policy tools with market needs and ensuring Malaysia's industrial ambitions are matched by execution on the ground.' Monitor ERP, this year's Gold Sponsor, was recognised for their integrated enterprise solutions that help manufacturers connect, optimise, and scale operations efficiently. Special thanks also went to AM Machinery, the event's Woven Bag Sponsor, for their continued support of Metaltech and Automex 2025. Informa Markets Malaysia was lauded for its role in transforming Metaltech and Automex into a regional powerhouse of industrial advancement and collaboration. In a strategic move to broaden its national impact, the International Automation Technology Exhibition (Automex) will debut as a standalone event from Nov 4–6 this year at the Setia Spice Convention Centre in Penang. After more than 14 years of co-location with Metaltech, this expansion reflects Automex's growing influence and the rising demand for smart automation, robotics, AI, and machine vision technologies, especially in Malaysia's northern manufacturing corridor. With momentum at an all-time high, the organisers are already gearing up for a landmark celebration - the 30th anniversary of Metaltech and Automex, set to take place from May 20–23, 2026 at Mitec. This milestone event promises to be the biggest and boldest edition yet, spotlighting three decades of breakthroughs, partnerships, and progress that have shaped Malaysia's industrial landscape. Metaltech and Automex 2025 runs from May 14–17 at Mitec. Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.

CPO Futures Likely To Trade Sideways Next Week Amid Limited Market Catalysts, Shorter Week

By Siti Noor Afera Abu KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives is expected to move sideways next week due to limited market catalysts and a shorter trading week. Palm oil trader David Ng said the lack of fresh trading cues will likely keep the market range-bound in the near term. 'We expect the commodity to trade between RM3,750 and RM3,950 per tonne,' he said. Cargo surveyors expect exports of Malaysian palm oil products during May 1-25 to rise between 7.3 per cent and 11.6 per cent, compared with the same period a month ago. Meanwhile, Fastmarkets Palm Oil Analytics senior analyst Dr Sathia Varqa said market participants will be keenly watching for May supply and demand estimates from newswire polling and the full month production data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Association, including data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), due on June 10. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the spot-month June 2025 contract rose RM64 to RM3,888 per tonne, July 2025 was RM55 higher at RM3,891 per tonne, and August 2025 added RM51 to RM3,878. Malaysian actor Zhang Yaodong spotted manning steamed seafood stall in Singapore

In a Xiaohongshu post, the user said the stall belongs to Zhang Yaodong and he was working that day because his employee had resigned. Photos: Xiaohongshu Singapore-based Malaysian actor Zhang Yaodong was spotted manning a steamed seafood stall at coffee shop 9007 Kopitiam in the Tampines industrial area on June 4. Clad in a plain white tee, the 47-year-old was standing in front of the cash register and appeared to be taking orders from customers. The Xiaohongshu user who posted about the sighting on June 4 said the stall belongs to Zhang and he was working that day because his employee had resigned. Amid the hustle and bustle, the user noted that the former Mediacorp artiste was polite, and affirmed Zhang in her post by saying that there is nothing better than correcting one's behaviour after making a mistake. The bachelor's image took a hit in July 2024 when rumours surfaced about him fathering children out of wedlock with women of different nationalities. The allegations resulted in him filing a police report, with his manager adding that he will not be addressing the issue again. But in November 2024, Zhang took to Instagram to commemorate his holiday to South Korea with his two daughters, confirming his father status for the first time. In February, Mediacorp's talent management agency The Celebrity Agency stated it was no longer representing him and that he has not participated in the filming of any new shows. Zhang, whose parents used to be hawkers, reportedly used to run a catering business and opened a roast meat stall in a foodcourt. He also ventured into Taiwanese cuisine, selling beef noodles in his home town of Kuala Lumpur. In 2017, he opened an Asian fusion restaurant, Maru, in Tanjong Pagar, but it has since closed. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
