Gavin McKenna, projected 2026 No. 1 NHL draft pick, officially commits to Penn State

New York Post09-07-2025
Gavin McKenna's next trip is to the Big Ten.
To State College, Pennsylvania, to be exact.
The projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft has committed to Penn State after deciding between the Nittany Lions and Michigan State.
After the news was reported Monday that the 17-year-old was likely going to don the blue and white, McKenna made it official on Tuesday during an appearance on ESPN's 'SportsCenter.'
The 2024 CHL Player of the Year said he's excited to make the leap from major junior hockey to the stateside NCAA game, which is allowed under a game-changing November decision that will now let players from the OHL, WHL and QMJHL go to college hockey if they so desire.
ESPN reported that McKenna was offered a six-figure NIL deal by Penn State during his recruitment, which is thought to be the highest total for a college hockey player.

'I feel this is the next step in my development to reach my ultimate goal of playing in the NHL and I am excited to get to Happy Valley,' McKenna said. 'I'm very appreciative for all the support I've received so far, especially to my family who has been with me through it all.'
McKenna spent the last two-plus seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL, tallying an absurd 41 goals and 88 assists this past season to finish second in the league with 129 points.
Landing McKenna is a huge boon for Penn State, which fell to Boston University in the national semifinal — the first time in the program's history it had reached the Frozen Four.

McKenna will be joining another WHL star in defenseman Jackson Smith, who was drafted No. 14 overall by the Blue Jackets after a season on the blue line of the Tri-City Americans.

Where does Nebraska rank in the annual Big Ten preseason poll?

Right before the Big Ten Media Days in Las Vegas, fans got a glimpse of the Big Ten preseason rankings based on how members of the press predict the Big Ten will finish the 2025 football season. Of the 18 teams on the list, Nebraska ranked 8th, ahead of six of its conference opponents scheduled for this season. Stephen Means of highlighted how the media group assumed responsibility for organizing the poll when the Big Ten dropped it 15 years ago. Beat writers from all 18 Big Ten teams were invited to participate, as were some who cover the entire league or have a national perspective. A total of 24 voters participated. Each writer was asked to vote 1-18, with first-place votes worth 18 points, second-place votes worth 17, and so on. Penn State sits atop the rankings with 435 points, and the defending national champions, Ohio State, finished close behind them with 431. James Parks of Sports Illustrated pointed out how if Penn State's offensive continuity gets them into the playoff, then the Nittany Lions may make another deep run. With returning quarterback Drew Allar and star running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton, Penn State is looking to make a run for the championship. Nebraska nestled into eighth with 277 points, 10 points behind Iowa and eight points ahead of USC. Parks mentioned that this is head coach Matt Rhule's third year with the Huskers, which is typically when he starts turning things around with his college teams. Rhule's third year certainly holds such possibilities with Dylan Raiola back under center after his freshman year, and with Dana Holgorsen now at the helm as offensive coordinator. Penn State takes top spot in USA TODAY Sports Big Ten power rankings

There is no denying that Penn State is preparing for one of the more anticipated seasons in program history after making a run to the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. The bar has been raised by many for the Nittany Lions, and the hype train continues to be roaring at full steam heading into the 2025 season. That hype continued to rise with the Nittany Lions landing on top of the Big Ten preseason power rankings from USA TODAY Sports college football writer Paul Myerberg. Yes, Penn State comes out ahead of the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and the defending Big Ten champion Oregon Ducks, respectively. That has been the fairly common belief by those around the college football media circles this offseason in part due to a roster returning many key players on each side of the ball, despite losing first-round draft picks in Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren, and adding key transfers to help plug the void at the wide receiver position. The addition of Trebor Pena from Syracuse is considered a major upgrade for an offense that already added a pair of other talented wide receivers in the offseason. Penn State's rise to the top of the Big Ten power rankings is focused largely on the expectations for the offense. The return of Drew Allar at quarterback and both star running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen gives Penn State as solid a returning backfield as we may see this season in all of college football. Penn State's schedule is also moderately favorable, with the biggest challenge coming with a road trip to Ohio State and getting Oregon at home for a primetime whiteout game highlighting the home schedule. According to the power rankings from Myerberg, Penn State will face five of the Big Ten's top-10 teams this season. Three of those games will come at home (Oregon, Indiana, and Nebraska), and the other two will be on the road (at Ohio State and at Iowa). You can see the full Big Ten power rankings from Myerberg via USA TODAY Sports to see how the whole conference looks in 2025.
