‘Pee-Wee as Himself' Director Got a Recording From Paul Reubens 24 Hours Before He Died
Over the course of two years, Matt Wolf spent hours interviewing Paul Reubens for his new HBO documentary 'Pee-Wee as Himself,' capturing a portrait of a man who could be warm and inviting on some days and pushy and controlling on others.
It was a push-and-pull relationship between the director and his subject right up to the day before his death on July 30, 2023.
'I had no idea that Paul had been battling cancer for six years,' Wolf told senior writer Drew Taylor at TheWrap's Sundance Studio presented by World of Hyatt.
'I did have the sense that Paul was motivated to tell his story in a way he hadn't been before, that it was going to be challenging for him, but that he threw himself into that process and was fully committed to being himself on camera in a way that was totally uncomfortable and something he had never done,' he continued. 'The idea that these would be the last words that he would share publicly with the world was completely off my radar.'
Wolf decided to make his relationship with Reubens over the course of the interviews part of the final cut of 'Pee-Wee as Himself,' showing how the famed comedic actor wasn't always forthcoming on every question.
'On the first day, the whole kind of rebelling against the process, or kind of pushing back on me, or telling jokes as a way to avoid addressing more kind of difficult subject matter. I realized that's how it was going to go. I certainly didn't take it personally,' he said. 'He was, by his own admission, incredibly controlling, as you can tell in the film, super gregarious, and also very ambivalent about being known publicly.'
Wolf and Reubens had a final interview scheduled in the summer of 2023, but Reubens cancelled it two weeks prior to his death. Wolf says he found out about the actor's passing via social media and decided to travel to Los Angeles to meet with the people who were closest to Reubens. That led to a meeting with top Hollywood publicist Kelly Bush Novak, who provided Wolf with a recording of Reubens taped the day before his death.
'He made it for the documentary because he wanted to do that final interview, but it was too late,' Wolf recounted. 'Every day I woke up saying, 'You need to rise to the occasion of these extraordinary circumstances,' and the responsibility you've been handed to both live up to the challenge to tell Paul's story and his full complexity, but also to dramatize what happened, because it's a very unusual situation and circumstance for telling somebody's life story.'

Guest acting Emmy odds: See how Kaitlyn Dever, Jeffrey Wright, Martin Scorsese, Bryan Cranston, and other hopefuls stack up
Last week, the four guest acting categories were added to Gold Derby's Emmy predictions center, and we now have a snapshot of the initial odds. For Best Drama Guest Actress, The Last of Us holds the top two spots with Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a vengeful soldier in the zombie apocalypse, and Catherine O'Hara as Gail, a therapist who has a run-in with Pedro Pascal's Joel. Dever has yet to win an Emmy Award, while O'Hara is a two-time champion for starring on Schitt's Creek (2020) and for writing SCTV Network (1982). More from GoldDerby 'Your Friends and Neighbors' star Lena Hall on her emotionally raw Hole cover in the season finale: 'This is what I do' The entire 'Karate Kid' franchise, ranked (animated series included!) 'A supremely talented actor': Loretta Swit remembered by 'M*A*S*H' costars, including Alan Alda READ: For Best Drama Guest Actor, Jeffrey Wright is in the lead for playing Isaac on The Last of Us, the former FEDRA soldier in post-apocalypse Seattle who switches sides in explosive fashion. He previously won an Emmy for the HBO adaptation of Angels in America (2004). In second place is Shawn Hatosy, whose Dr. Abbott shares several memorable moments with Noah Wyle's Dr. "Robby" Robinavitch on The Pitt. READ: For Best Comedy Guest Actress, Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is well-positioned to become just the third person ever to claim back-to-back Emmys in this category. She reprises her role as Donna Berzatto, the volatile mother of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Michael (Jon Bernthal), and Natalie (Abby Elliott) on the FX series. Brad Pitt's F1 film lauded as ‘old school summer blockbuster' in rave first reactions
Full reviews aren't yet in for the new blockbuster F1, but some early reactions from press screenings have arrived on social media and they're full of praise. The film, from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris as Formula One drivers recruited to the same team by an owner played by Javier Bardem. In one post indicative of the prevailing mood, The Wrap writer Drew Taylor wrote on Twitter/X: 'F1 The Movie is absolutely incredible. It's one of the coolest, most entertaining movies you'll probably ever see, but none of that sizzle takes away from its soul. Kosinski precision engineered an eye-popping, edge of your seat pop epic that makes you feel so much. I adored it.' Podcast The Nerds of Color added: 'F1 The Movie is a fun, fast-paced thrill ride with a ton of heart! Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are electric! But the star of the show are the exhilarating race sequences that truly put you in the driver's seat! A reminder of why we love summer blockbusters!' While Penske Media's Tim Chan opined: 'Just got out of F1 The Movie screening: film was more emotional than I had anticipated, Brad Pitt is hotter than ever, soundtrack (with Tate! Roddy! Rosé!) is perfect accompaniment to the race scenes.' Nerdist contributor Maude Garrett called the film 'so freaking good' and added: 'It has all the adrenaline, heart, pacing, story and character that completely fleshes out this movie into excellence. I can only imagine how much MORE I would love this movie if I was a fan of F1 racing! Maybe I am now?' 'Joseph Kosinski's #F1TheMovie hits the gas and doesn't stop,' wrote Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes interview Erik Davis. 'The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch. You definitely feel shades of TOP GUN MAVERICK in that it plays like an old school summer blockbuster. What a ride.' The universal acclaim the film is receiving on social media contrasts with the mixed response to the film's first teaser trailer in July last year. Some fans pointed out the hypocrisy of Pitt's brash dismissal of safety in a line of dialogue ('Who said anything about safe?') — especially as Formula One prides itself on its safety measures through the supervision of organizing body, the FIA. 'That opening line is awful on so many levels', one commenter shared. Another joked: 'Let's remove the halo! That thing weighs down the car! Let's remove the brakes. Who needs that anyway?' F1 is set to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the UK on June 25, 2025, and in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2025, just days before the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. Last month, Haas driver and British rookie Oliver Bearman commented on Pitt's driving: 'Honestly, he did an impressive job. He was pushing the car, that's for sure. 'I know he was training in the background and I know the guy whose team he was training with and he said he was taking some risks and doing a good job. He did his homework, so it's cool.' 'I think the goal of the movie is going to be achieved,' Bearman added. 'It is going to be a huge hit and it is going to make people want to watch F1, which is really the goal of it. The onboard shots and the work that they did was incredible.'
