JDT complete triple quadruple with Malaysia Cup triumph
KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) battled to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sri Pahang in the Malaysia Cup final to retain their title at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
The win saw the Southern Tigers complete a historic triple quadruple, having already secured the Super League, FA Cup and Charity Shield this season, in front of nearly 56,000 fans.
It was Sri Pahang who struck first, with T. Saravanan pouncing on a rebound off JDT goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi to fire the Elephants into a surprise lead in the 14th minute.
However, Fandi Ahmad's side were dealt a major blow just 20 minutes later.
Midfielder Sergio Aguero was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession — the second for a reckless challenge on JDT's Heberty Fernandes in the 35th minute — forcing Sri Pahang to play the remainder of the match with 10 men. They clung onto their slender lead at half-time.
JDT coach Hector Bidoglio made a double change after the break, bringing on Romel Morales and Iker Martinez for Natxo Insa and Juan Muniz.
The move shifted the momentum.
In the 54th minute, after a collision between Oscar Arribas and Azrif Nasrulhaq, referee Razlan Joffri Ali awarded a penalty following a lengthy VAR review.
Bergson da Silva calmly slotted home from the spot to level the score, making up for an earlier disallowed goal for offside.
Parity in numbers was restored just three minutes later when JDT's Park Jun Heong was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Mykola Ahapov.
With both sides down to 10 men, the Southern Tigers pressed relentlessly.
The breakthrough came in the 74th minute when Arif Aiman Hanapi fired home the winner, sealing JDT's comeback and etching their name once again in Malaysian football history.

Malaysian badminton enjoys historic four-title World Tour run
KUALA LUMPUR: Four titles in just three consecutive weeks — a feat never before achieved by Malaysian badminton on the World Tour. It all began with world No. 3 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 4 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who bagged the men's and women's doubles titles at the Super 500 Thailand Open four weeks ago. Then came world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who stunned Aaron-Wooi Yik to claim the Super 500 Malaysia Masters. Aaron-Wooi Yik bounced back in style to secure their second World Tour crown at the Super 750 Singapore Open, bringing Malaysia's tally to four titles. Pearly-Thinaah narrowly missed out on a fifth, going down in a thrilling final to China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning at the Indonesia Open on Sunday. Wei Chong-Kai Wun also impressed with a semi-final finish. The relentless four-week run demanded immense physical and mental endurance, and Malaysia's doubles pairs delivered in style. The man behind the scenes is national men's doubles coach Herry IP — a seasoned tactician with a decorated past coaching Indonesia's best. Even he admits this past month has exceeded all expectations. Herry had earlier described the All England disaster in March — when all BAM men's pairs crashed out in the first round — as his lowest point. But the "Magician" didn't stay down for long. He masterminded a revival starting with Aaron-Wooi Yik's victory at the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in April — a non-World Tour event. "Three titles from the men's doubles — this is beyond what I imagined," said Herry. "Aaron-Wooi Yik showed incredible resilience, especially in Singapore. Wei Chong-Kai Wun are progressing well, physically and mentally. It's a positive sign for all our players. "They've started playing like my former Indonesian pairs. We've introduced a similar training programme and they're adapting brilliantly." The success is reflected in the world rankings too. Aaron-Wooi Yik are set to rise to world No. 2 on Tuesday, while Malaysian independent duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will become world No. 1 — a first for the country. Pearly-Thinaah will also climb one spot to world No. 3 in the women's doubles. Malaysia won only eight titles (Super 500 level and above) in the whole of 2024. But in 2025, they already have six, including the BAC, and there's more to come. The World Tour resumes with the Japan Open from July 15–20, and momentum is firmly on Malaysia's side.

'I stopped Man United, now it's Malaysia' says Vietnam captain
KUALA LUMPUR: Vietnam captain Do Duy Manh knows exactly what awaits him and his teammates when they face Harimau Malaya in Tuesday's Asian Cup Group F qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil — a deafening roar from the home crowd. The 28-year-old centre-back is no stranger to the Bukit Jalil cauldron, having recently played there in the Maybank Challenge Cup, where he helped the Asean All-Stars stun Manchester United 1-0. He also featured in the pulsating first leg of the 2018 Asean Cup final, where Malaysia fought back to draw 2-2 before Vietnam clinched the title with a 1-0 win in Hanoi to seal a 3-2 aggregate victory. "My first game here was the 2018 Asean Cup final. The second was just 12 days ago, against Manchester United. And now, tomorrow's match, I think it will be a very exciting game," said Duy Manh at Monday's pre-match press conference in Bukit Jalil. "We'll be playing in a big stadium, under pressure from a large Malaysian crowd. My teammates and I will do our best to handle that pressure. We must stay focused for the full 90 minutes and follow the coach's instructions." Malaysia have struggled against Vietnam in recent years, losing seven and drawing one in their last eight meetings, with their most recent win dating back to 2014. But Duy Manh warned that this isn't the same Malaysian side they're used to facing. "It's not the same as in 2018. Malaysia have a new coach and a new squad. From what we know, there are around 17 to 18 new players, and some of them play abroad." "It won't be an easy game. But we have our own goals, and we'll try our best to achieve them. We could lose, we could draw, or we could win, but personally, I'm just focused on the match."

Vios Challenge joins Super GT weekend lineup at Sepang
KUALA LUMPUR: Vios Challenge, the popular one-make series, is set to make its international event debut as a support race for the Malaysian round of the Autobacs Super GT at Sepang Circuit on June 26-28. The Vios Challenge will feature a special one-hour race format for the event instead of its usual 30-minute format. The race will feature three categories - Super Sporting, for professional drivers, Sporting (amateur) and Rookie Class (young development drivers). The Vios Challenge is currently in its eighth season and is one of the most accessible grassroots racing platforms in Malaysia. UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ravindran Kurusamy said the series has played an important role in driving talent development in Malaysia. "The Vios Challenge has served as a proven springboard for local talent, and to now have our drivers compete on the same stage as international teams at Super GT marks a defining milestone," said Ravindran in a statement released today (June 9). "Looking ahead, Toyota intends to broaden our motorsports footprint by establishing a clearer progression path for our Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Rookies, enabling their natural graduation into higher-level racing categories. "Plans are underway to form Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia (TGRMY), a factory racing team to participate in regional motorsport series to strengthen Malaysia's presence in the sport." The Vios Challenge is one of two support races for the Super GT weekend at Sepang, the other being the GR86 Cup Malaysia Series. UMW Toyota Malaysia and TGR Malaysia are the title sponsor for the Malaysian round of Super GT which is making its return to Malaysian soil this year after a 12-year hiatus.
