Vios Challenge joins Super GT weekend lineup at Sepang
KUALA LUMPUR: Vios Challenge, the popular one-make series, is set to make its international event debut as a support race for the Malaysian round of the Autobacs Super GT at Sepang Circuit on June 26-28.
The Vios Challenge will feature a special one-hour race format for the event instead of its usual 30-minute format.
The race will feature three categories - Super Sporting, for professional drivers, Sporting (amateur) and Rookie Class (young development drivers).
The Vios Challenge is currently in its eighth season and is one of the most accessible grassroots racing platforms in Malaysia.
UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ravindran Kurusamy said the series has played an important role in driving talent development in Malaysia.
"The Vios Challenge has served as a proven springboard for local talent, and to now have our drivers compete on the same stage as international teams at Super GT marks a defining milestone," said Ravindran in a statement released today (June 9).
"Looking ahead, Toyota intends to broaden our motorsports footprint by establishing a clearer progression path for our Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Rookies, enabling their natural graduation into higher-level racing categories.
"Plans are underway to form Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia (TGRMY), a factory racing team to participate in regional motorsport series to strengthen Malaysia's presence in the sport."
The Vios Challenge is one of two support races for the Super GT weekend at Sepang, the other being the GR86 Cup Malaysia Series.
UMW Toyota Malaysia and TGR Malaysia are the title sponsor for the Malaysian round of Super GT which is making its return to Malaysian soil this year after a 12-year hiatus.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia are banking on Mirabel Ting and Jeneath Wong to sustain their gold medal streak at the Sea Games in Thailand in December. The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) is confident that with both US-based aces back in the fold, the women's team will once again be in the hunt for top honours, as the nation target a third straight Sea Games triumph. Jeneath, representing Pepperdine University, may not have matched Mirabel's accolades this season, but carved her own slice of history by winning the Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in Vietnam in March — the first Malaysian to do so in the prestigious championship. MGA president Tan Sri Anwar Nor knows their presence could prove decisive. "Having both Mirabel and Jeneath available again will boost our medal hopes tremendously. A podium finish is almost certain, but whether we can win gold depends on how we fare against the Thais, who will be very strong at home," said Anwar. Thailand are expected to assemble a formidable line-up led by US-based stars Eila Galitsky and Suvichaya Vinijchaitham, with the timing of the Games — during the winter break in the US college season — allowing countries to field their strongest squads. The Philippines are also expected to unleash world No. 6 Rianne Malixi, adding further depth to an already competitive women's field. Mirabel and Jeneath last played together at the 2021 Hanoi Sea Games, combining for silver in the team event. Jeneath also secured an individual bronze. The duo were absent in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2023 after being unable to get clearance from respective schools, but Malaysia still walked away with a gold medal through homegrown hero Ng Jing Xuen in the women's individual event. "Mirabel and Jeneath are capable of delivering because only the two best individual counting scores will contribute to the team result. If they are at the top of their game, we're right in contention with the Thais," he said. While the women's team carry stronger expectations, Malaysia's men are also shaping up well. Anson Yeo and Nathan Tsen, fresh off a 1–2 finish at the PGM Tour's Tun Ahmad Sarji Trophy last month, have shown they're capable of competing and beating seasoned pros. Even in Cambodia, Malaysia's men delivered beyond expectations. Malcolm Ting, Mirabel's elder brother, stepped up in the absence of more fancied US-based duo Marcus Lim and K. Rhaasrikanesh to win a surprise silver in the men's individual event. Malaysia's campaign in Hanoi 2022 produced a two-gold, one-silver, one-bronze haul, led by Ervin Chang's double gold in the individual and team events, with strong support from Marcus and Rhaasrikanesh. Malaysian badminton enjoys historic four-title World Tour run
KUALA LUMPUR: Four titles in just three consecutive weeks — a feat never before achieved by Malaysian badminton on the World Tour. It all began with world No. 3 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 4 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, who bagged the men's and women's doubles titles at the Super 500 Thailand Open four weeks ago. Then came world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who stunned Aaron-Wooi Yik to claim the Super 500 Malaysia Masters. Aaron-Wooi Yik bounced back in style to secure their second World Tour crown at the Super 750 Singapore Open, bringing Malaysia's tally to four titles. Pearly-Thinaah narrowly missed out on a fifth, going down in a thrilling final to China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning at the Indonesia Open on Sunday. Wei Chong-Kai Wun also impressed with a semi-final finish. The relentless four-week run demanded immense physical and mental endurance, and Malaysia's doubles pairs delivered in style. But in 2025, they already have six, including the BAC, and there's more to come. The World Tour resumes with the Japan Open from July 15–20, and momentum is firmly on Malaysia's side.
