Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells released from hospital with multiple injuries after scary fall
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was discharged from the hospital after a hard fall on Tuesday during a win over the Charlotte Hornets, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
The incident occurred after Wells was undercut on a dunk attempt late in the second quarter by Hornets guard KJ Simpson, who was issued a Flagrant-2 foul and ejected from the game. Wells was taken off the court on a stretcher and would leave the arena in an ambulance.
Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo said after the game that Wells suffered a broken wrist and had movement in his extremities. He also sustained a facial laceration and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period following the fall.
Wells will finish the season averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 35.2% shooting from 3-point range in 79 appearances. He is fourth in the rookie class in total scoring (823 points) and was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in October and November.
The 39th pick had appeared in every game for the Grizzlies before the incident. He became a full-time starter for former head coach Taylor Jenkins in their sixth game of the season and remained in that role after emerging as a key figure in the frontcourt.
Wells was selected to the Rising Stars Game at NBA All-Star Weekend in February and was among the front-runners to win Rookie of the Year for much of the season. He is the only second-round pick averaging at least 10 points per game.

Paige Bueckers scores 44 points, sets WNBA rookie record in Dallas Wings' loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paige Bueckers put together not just one of the best shooting performances by a WNBA rookie, but one of the best performances ever by any player. The top pick in this year's draft scored 44 points in the Dallas Wings' 81-80 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night, the most points by a rookie in WNBA history and the most points in a game by any player this season. Bueckers sank 17 of 21 shots, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 at the free-throw line to become the first player in league history with 40-plus points on 80% shooting from the floor. She also had four rebounds and three assists. The WNBA first-year player record of 44 was set by Cynthia Cooper in the inaugural season of the WNBA (1997), when all players were 'first year.' The true rookie record was held by Candace Parker who scored 40 points in 2008. But it was a bittersweet performance for Bueckers, whose primary focus is on winning. 'I've always prided myself and the team on winning so that's obviously the main goal," she said. 'Honestly, I think I'm just most proud of this team, like, the way we fight. This team just means so much to me.' Bueckers, who scored Dallas' final 13 points, credited her teammates. 'Just my teammates getting me open. Screening for me, running some off-ball actions, trying to get myself open looks," she said. 'Just bringing the ball up the floor. (Luisa Geiselsoder) set amazing screens for me the entire night and then my teammates just looking for me, getting me the ball, getting me open.' Bueckers' teammate Arike Ogunbowale, who did not play on Wednesday night, posted 'ROY' (Rookie of the Year) on X. Bueckers is 60 points shy of Ogunbowale's franchise rookie scoring record of 630 points, set in 2019. 'Unreal. honored to play with you,' teammate Maddy Siegrist posted on X. Even the Sparks fans realized they were witnessing something special, cheering every Bueckers basket. 'It means a lot specifically because people have gotten to see the struggle and people have gotten to see the injuries, and the ups and downs,' said Bueckers, who struggled with injuries at UConn. Bueckers moved past Cooper for third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history with 29. Las Vegas forward A'ja Wilson holds the record of 33. Bueckers had a chance to seal the game with the ball in her hands with 30 seconds left on the clock and a one-point lead. The rookie guard drew two defenders near the 3-point arc and unselfishly passed it to the corner for Aziaha James, whose 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim. Los Angeles got it to its veteran guard Kelsey Plum, who dribbled down the clock before driving into the lane past multiple defenders to bank in a runner at the buzzer.

Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever guard reportedly tweaked ankle during workout
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is working her way back from a right groin injury that has sidelined her for 13 consecutive games, but it was revealed Wednesday she suffered another injury during her recovery. Clark, who last suited up for the Fever on July 15, suffered a mild bone bruise in her left ankle during an individual workout session in Phoenix on Aug. 7, according to The Indianapolis Star, part of the USA TODAY Network. Clark tweaked her ankle the same day the team lost guards Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) to season-ending injuries in the Fever's 95-60 loss to the Mercury. Ten days later, the Fever also lost guard Sophie Cunningham (MCL tear) for the season on Aug. 17, further depleting the team's backcourt. There's no timeline for Clark's return. Fieldhouse Files was the first to report the news of Clark's ankle injury. On Wednesday, head coach Stephanie White confirmed Clark has not returned to practice, which would mark a crucial step in her ramp-up process. "Until (Clark) can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, we're really status quo," White said. "You never wanna see injuries happen, first and foremost," White added, referring to Cunningham. "You hate it when it's anyone, let alone the third season-ending injury that we've seen this year. But like I told our team ... yes, we've been dealt a crappy hand, but we have to play it." Clark, who previously missed time with a left quad and a left groin injury, has been sidelined 22 of the Fever's 35 games this season. Indiana is 8-5 with Clark in the lineup and 11-11 without her on the floor. The 2024 Rookie of the Year is averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and a career-high 8.8 assists in 13 games this season. Her assists average is the second-highest in the league, behind Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas (9.0). Caitlin Clark injury timeline The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast.
