Two Brothers Arrested in Visa Scam and Human Trafficking Case
Morocco's National Brigade of Judicial Police caught the pair, aged 35 and 40, on Friday. One of them is already known to the authorities.
Police say the men lured women by offering to help them get Schengen visas for travel to Europe. But instead of travel documents, the women found themselves unknowingly listed as company owners. Their personal documents and cheques were used to purchase at least 20 vehicles, which were later sold illegally.
So far, three victims have been identified, but police believe more may be involved.
The case comes as Morocco ranks fourth worldwide for Schengen visa applications, behind only China, India and Turkey. In 2024, Moroccans submitted over 606,000 applications, despite growing frustration over the process.
Many applicants say it's become nearly impossible to book visa appointments through official channels. Intermediaries have flooded the system, snapping up slots and reselling them for thousands of dirhams.
Moroccan YouTuber Bilal Fraiha recently spoke out on social media, saying he was asked to pay MAD 4,000 ($400) just to book an appointment that's supposed to be free. Others say they've been charged as much as MAD 6,000 ($600).
Fraiha urged the authorities to crack down on the black market in visa appointments, calling the situation 'unacceptable.'
Meanwhile, police are still investigating the Casablanca case, searching for other suspects who may be linked to the network.

Two Moroccans Arrested in Spain Over 1.5 Tons of Hashish in Fake Oranges
Rabat– Spanish authorities have arrested two Moroccan nationals in the Malaga region following a major drug trafficking operation. The suspects were intercepted while transporting 1,579 kilograms of hashish concealed inside fake oranges. The operation began when officers from the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) noticed a car driving suspiciously close to an unmarked white truck on the A-7 highway between Vélez-Málaga and Malaga. Alerted by the behavior, the provincial police's narcotics unit joined the operation to intercept both vehicles. The small car managed to escape following a maneuver, while the truck was stopped at a highway exit. Upon inspecting the truck's trailer, officers discovered several pallets of oranges. However, some of the fruits appeared unusually bright and had an abnormal texture. Further examination revealed they were counterfeit, hollowed out, and filled with hashish. Authorities seized a total of 1,579 kilograms of the drug. A video shared on the official Instagram account of the Policía Nacional shows the operation, capturing the moment officers uncovered the fake oranges and revealed the concealed hashish inside. The truck driver and his companion, both Moroccan nationals, were immediately arrested on drug trafficking charges. They were later presented before Malaga's Instruction Court No. 10 and placed in provisional detention. Prosecutor General Reveals Details in Sion Assidon Case
Marrakech – The King's Prosecutor General at the Casablanca Court of Appeal issued a statement on Tuesday, providing details about the case of activist Sion Assidon, who was found unconscious at his home. According to the statement, two employees reported to police on August 11 that their employer, Sion Shimon Harim Baroch Assidon, had not shown up for work and was not answering their calls. They noted his car was parked outside his house. Judicial police immediately went to the residence. After opening the locked door with specialist assistance, officers found several gardening tools in the yard: a ladder, saw, pickaxe, and pruning shears, along with freshly cut vegetation. Inside the ground floor, Assidon was discovered unconscious on a couch, still breathing. He was immediately transported to a hospital. Investigators found personal belongings inside the home, including his phone, sandals with grass traces, keys, two laptops, and neatly arranged books and items. There were no signs of forced entry or disturbance. A surveillance camera located about 300 meters from Assidon's home showed him arriving alone in his car on August 9 at 10:36 a.m. He parked opposite his house and entered wearing the same clothes he was found in later. The vehicle remained parked in the same spot until police arrived on August 11. Biological samples and fingerprints collected from the tools and home revealed only Assidon's prints. The worker left around 5:00 p.m. while Assidon continued working. When returning to work Sunday (August 10) morning, the worker noticed the ladder still on cut grass clippings. The neighbor who owns the adjacent property confirmed asking Assidon to trim his garden plants. They had agreed to do this work on Saturday, and the neighbor verified seeing him perform this task that day. The King's Prosecutor General stated that the investigation is ongoing, and appropriate legal measures will be taken once completed. Assidon, born in 1948, is a historic figure in Moroccan activism. A former political prisoner and co-founder of the March 23 Movement in the 1970s, he is also one of the most recognized faces of the BDS movement and radical left in Morocco. He remains in a coma at Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Casablanca following emergency head surgery due to serious injuries to his head and face. The Moroccan Front for Palestinian Support and Against Normalization organized a silent solidarity sit-in on Monday evening outside the hospital. The Front had previously released a statement expressing concern about the prolonged silence from judicial and security authorities regarding Assidon's critical condition. They had called for the mobilization of all state resources for his care and survival. A strong police presence from various units was reported around the clinic where the anti-normalization activist is being treated. Before the Prosecutor's statement was issued, the Front had announced plans to implement an action and advocacy program to fully clarify the circumstances of this event, which they described as still unclear. The Moroccan Observatory Against Normalization also issued a statement wishing a speedy recovery to Assidon, whom they called one of Morocco's great activists for the Palestinian cause.
