Federer waves the flag as Porsche takes lead at Le Mans

CNA14-06-2025
Swiss tennis great Roger Federer waved the French flag to get the 93rd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans underway on Saturday, with Porsche immediately seizing the lead from Cadillac.
Cadillac had swept the front row in Thursday's qualifying but any advantage was short-lived as Porsche Penske's Julien Andlauer slipstreamed into the lead from third on the grid before the first chicane on the opening lap.
The race at the Sarthe circuit in north-west France features 62 cars shared by 186 drivers from 34 countries and is the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship, with 21 hypercars in the battle for overall victory.
Organisers have put the total weekend attendance at more than 300,000 spectators.
Ferrari have won the last two editions and will be able to keep the trophy at their Maranello factory if they complete a hat-trick.
After a French air force flypast, retired 20-time grand slam winner Federer waved the flag to release the field in a rolling start for a race through the night and into Sunday afternoon.

Marseille put Rabiot, Rowe on transfer list after alleged dressing room altercation

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot and English winger Jonathan Rowe have been placed on the transfer list by Olympique de Marseille due to "unacceptable behaviour" in the dressing room after last week's Ligue 1 loss at Stade Rennais, the club said on Tuesday. Reports in French media said the two players had an altercation in the dressing room after Friday's 1-0 loss at Rennes, despite the hosts playing most of the game with 10 men. "This decision was taken due to unacceptable behaviour in the dressing room after the match against Stade Rennais FC, in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct," Marseille said in a statement. Both Rabiot and Rowe arrived at Marseille last year and played regularly as the club finished second in Ligue 1.

Forest sign French striker Kalimuendo from Rennes

Nottingham Forest have signed French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Monday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed but British media reported Forest paid about 26 million pounds ($35.19 million) for the 23-year-old. Kalimuendo came through Paris St Germain's academy and had two loan spells at Lens before joining Rennes in 2022, scoring 40 goals from 112 appearances in all competitions. At Lens, he netted 21 goals in 65 appearances. Kalimuendo was impressive in 2024-25, with 18 goals and four assists in 34 matches for Rennes. He was part of the France squad that won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. "This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history," Kalimuendo said. "I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists but I want more and want to reach a new level here." Forest have spent about 147 million pounds on seven signings in the transfer window, including three in the last three days. Kalimuendo joins midfielder James McAtee from Manchester City for 30 million pounds and winger Omari Hutchinson from Ipswich Town for 37.5 million at the City Ground. Forest, who finished fifth last season, began the new campaign with a 3-1 home win over Brentford on Sunday. The Midlands club are also playing in the Europa League, which will be their first European campaign since 1996. ($1 = 0.7388 pounds)

Diarra again seeks damages from FIFA, Belgian FA after CJEU ruling

Former France midfielder Lassana Diarra is restarting legal proceedings seeking 65 million euros ($75.93 million) in damages from FIFA and the Belgian FA after the European Union's top court (CJEU) ruled in October that some world soccer body rules breached EU laws. FIFA handed Diarra a fine of 10 million euros after the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid player left Lokomotiv Moscow one year into a four-year contract in 2014. That prompted the player to sue FIFA and Belgian FA for damages before a local court. Diarra said on Monday that he had waited a few months before restarting proceedings in Belgium hoping FIFA and the Belgian FA approached him for an amicable settlement, which did not happen. FIFA and the Belgian FA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "I have been forced to fight this legal battle since August 2014. That's more than 11 years," Diarra said in a joint press release from players' unions FIFPRO, FIFPRO Europe and France's UNFP (National Union of Professional Footballers), who had all backed him in the case. "I am doing this for myself ... but I have also done it for all the up-and-coming, lesser-known players who do not have the financial and psychological means to challenge FIFA before real judges." FIFA amended its transfer regulations following the CJEU ruling, adopting an interim framework on the calculation of compensation payable and burden of proof if there is a breach of contract. The CJEU ruling has also prompted a Dutch soccer players' group to announce it was preparing a Europe-wide class action claim against FIFA and other associations, seeking compensation over alleged loss of income due to restrictive transfer rules.
