Suspect held over deadly US fertility clinic bombing

Perth Now04-06-2025
US federal authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with last month's deadly bombing at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect, Daniel Park, a 32-year-old man from Washington state, was taken into custody at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York, the officials said.
He will make an initial appearance in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday afternoon and eventually face charges in California.
Park had been detained in Poland and deported by Polish authorities.
US officials were not clear why he had travelled to Poland and said he was not in southern California on the day of the bombing.
Officials alleged that Park secured 270 pounds of a fertiliser for Guy Bartkus, the primary suspect in the bombing.
The officials charged Park with providing and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist.
Bartkus, 25, died in the blast.
A bomb detonated shortly before 11am local time on May 17 in or near a car parked outside the fertility clinic, operated by American Reproductive Center.
In addition to the death of the primary suspect, several other people were injured, according to authorities.
Bartkus had "nihilistic ideations," FBI officials said at the time, adding that they were investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.
On Wednesday law enforcement officials said that Park shared those views and had posted them on internet forums.
Wednesday's arrest was first reported by NBC News.

Former PM Tony Abbott helps direct traffic in Sydney

Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has been praised after he was filmed helping to direct traffic in a busy Sydney car park. In a video shared to Instagram, the former Liberal leader was seen holding up a boom gate to allow vehicles to flow through quickly. The 67-year-old former politician – dressed in business attire – waved cars through to the amusement of some drivers who noticed the high-profile Aussie. The driver behind the wheel and passengers were surprised, while witnesses reportedly said they were shocked to see how quickly Mr Abbott leapt into action. The video shared this week has been watched close to half a million times. The former PM responded to the clip jokingly, saying: 'Finally found my calling!' He later shared it to his Instagram Stories. 'Caught in the act,' the 28th leader of Australia wrote. Social media lit up in praise for Mr Abbott. 'He was always a worker. Bushfire CFA volunteer, surf lifesaver, he did a lot more civil service than most pollies,' one user commented. 'I'm impressed. That's leader behaviour,' another added. 'Doing more for the community than Albo,' a third remarked. 'I love Tony. Top bloke. Always puts other first,' a fan wrote. Mr Abbott was the prime minister between 2013 to 2015 but faced internal criticism over his 2014 budget measures, poor opinion polling which led to low approval ratings. A no-confidence motion was filed by the Liberal Party, with his then communications minister Malcolm Turnbull winning a dramatic late-night ballot 54-44. Mr Turnbull was sworn in as the fifth PM in five years, after Labor predecessors switched from Kevin Rudd to Julia Gillard and back to Mr Rudd from 2010 to 2013. Mr Abbott suffered a shock loss in the 2019 election when his seat of Warringah, in Sydney's Northern Beaches, was won by independent Zali Steggall. The electorate had been held by the Liberals since 1922. After leaving politics, he was appointed an adviser on the United Kingdom's Board of Trade by then British PM Boris Johnson to help shape post-Brexit trade policy. In 2023 he joined Global Warming Policy Foundation, a UK-based think tank, which focuses on climate and energy policy. Mr Abbott was a sceptic on global warming, previously saying in late 2023 that human-induced climate change is 'ahistorical and implausible'. More recently he was spotted on the federal election campaign trail, trying to convince voters to vote for Liberal candidate for Spence, Daniel Wild, who later lost to Labor. The former politician recently took aim at Welcome to Country ceremonies, describing the practice as 'grating' and 'virtue signalling'. 'They suggest that the country belongs more to some people than others,' he said to 2GB, following the Anzac Day controversy in Melbourne where multiple men booed during the Welcome to Country portion of a Dawn Service. 'If we start acknowledging particular groups, why do we single out Indigenous elders as opposed to early settlers, post-war migrants, our war veterans, or even teachers and nurses? Everyone is making their own contribution to Australia.'

Democratic whistleblower tells FBI that Trump foe Adam Schiff approved classified leaks to target President: docs

A whistleblower has revealed that a former house intelligence committee chairman approved leaking classified information to discredit President Trump, according to new documents. A Democratic whistleblower told the FBI that Adam Schiff approved leaking classified information in order to discredit President Donald Trump, according to newly-released documents. The documents, which were obtained by Just The News, were recently handed over to Congress by FBI Director Kash Patel. The whistleblower reportedly worked for Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee for more than ten years, and reported Schiff's alleged behavior to the FBI in 2017. According to the report, the intelligence staffer called the leaking "treasonous" and "illegal," in addition to being unethical. He was most recently interviewed by the FBI in 2023. The staffer also said that he personally attended a meeting where Schiff greenlit the leak. "When working in this capacity, [redacted staffer's name] was called to an all-staff meeting by SCHIFF," the documents state, per Just The News. — FBI Director Kash Patel (@FBIDirectorKash) August 12, 2025 "In this meeting, SCHIFF stated the group would leak classified information which was derogatory to President of the United States DONALD J. TRUMP. SCHIFF stated the information would be used to indict President TRUMP." "[The whistleblower] stated this would be illegal and, upon hearing his concerns, unnamed members of the meeting reassured that they would not be caught leaking classified information," the report added. John Solomon, who co-authored the piece with Just The News' Jerry Dunleavy, appeared on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" to discuss the report. "This is the first of several major leak investigations we're going to see over the next several days," Solomon said. "You're going to see other major people that were clearly identified by the FBI, having leaked classified secrets." "Their own staff turned them in when interviewed by the FBI. Nothing, again, happened," he added. "It's a common pattern. The question now is, in Donald Trump's Justice Department, does that dynamic change?" Soon after the report was published, Patel shared it on X, saying that the FBI "found it [and] declassified it." "Now Congress can see how classified info was leaked to shape political narratives - and decide if our institutions were weaponized against the American people," Patel's post read. Vance calls out Democrats over Epstein files, reignites push for transparency

Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here Vice President JD Vance pushed back against criticism of the Trump administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, accusing Democrats of political opportunism and failing to act when they held power in an interview released on Sunday. "President Trump has demanded full transparency from this. And yet somehow the Democrats are attacking him and not the Biden administration, which did nothing for four years," Vance told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures", defending the administration's approach to the unreleased documents. "I laugh at the Democrats who are now all of a sudden, so interested in the Epstein files. For four years Joe Biden, the Democrats did absolutely nothing about this story," Vance added. Vance did not give more details or provide evidence of that allegation. Vance's comments come amid renewed public pressure to unseal documents related to the Epstein case after the Justice Department announced in a memo last month that there was no evidence the accused sex trafficker kept a "client list" or that he was murdered. After the Fox News interview aired, clips of Vance's remarks gained traction across social media, with users across the political spectrum posting: "Release the Epstein files!" "The president has said very clearly, because we've had other meetings about that, is that he wants us to be fully transparent," Vance said. "So we're working to compile the thousands and thousands of documents that are out there for full transparency," he said. The Justice Department told two federal judges Friday it wants to release grand jury exhibits in Epstein case, in addition to transcripts, with "appropriate redactions of victim-related and other personal identifying information." However, it's unclear how much information in the grand jury transcripts and evidence is already not in the public sphere. Vance also denied that the Epstein files were the subject of a meeting previously reported by CNN, held at the White House last week between Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, the vice president and others. "We did meet at the White House," Vance said. "We have a great FBI director and a great Department of Justice lead, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and we met to talk about how to ensure we have justice for the American people." "We actually didn't talk about the Epstein issue," Vance added. FBI Director Kash Patel (left) and US Vice President JD Vance. (Associated Press) Vance and his office denied on Wednesday that a meeting on Epstein was taking place, as CNN previously reported, but a source familiar with the logistics of the meeting said the attendees discussed a number of topics, including the Epstein case and potential next steps. Trump administration officials are weighing whether to publish an audio recording and transcript of Blanche's recent conversation with Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, CNN previously reported. Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee last week issued a dozen subpoenas to the Justice Department and high-profile Democratic and Republican figures for files and information related to Epstein.
