Blue Jays predicted to land $30 million former All-Star from Royals
At 55-41, they lead the division by two games over the Bronx Bombers. After selling at last year's trade deadline, Toronto will likely be adding to its roster this year.
Their biggest need is another starting pitcher. They have Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, Chris Bassitt and Bowden Francis, but more pitching can't hurt.
Matt Johnson of Sportsnaut predicts that Toronto will grab former All-Star Seth Lugo from the Kansas City Royals.
"At the All-Star Break, Toronto ranked 25th in rotation ERA and 18th in quality starts. Seth Lugo would be a perfect addition to the Blue Jays' rotation. He has been outstanding this season, consistently limiting hits and keeping runners off base," Johnson wrote.

Lugo is 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA and 3.0 WAR in 17 starts with the Royals. He has been one of the few bright spots for a Royals team that is falling out of contention.
The former All-Star has also pitched 101 innings. He does have a player option for 2026, which he will likely not exercise in order to return to free agency. This would effectively make him a rental for any team acquiring him.
The Blue Jays would certainly benefit from having Lugo in their rotation in the second half of the 2025 season. He can eat innings and pitch in big games down the stretch for a team looking to make a push.
Lugo was signed to a two-year, $30 million contract prior to 2024. It will certainly be interesting to see if the Blue Jays target him for rotation help.

Pete Alonso passes Darryl Strawberry for most home runs in Mets history, then hits another one
The New York Mets have a new home run king. Pete Alonso hit a two-run blast off Atlanta Braves starter Spencer Strider on Tuesday, extending New York's lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The home run was the 253rd of Alonso's career, moving him past a tie with franchise great Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. Alonso broke the record in front of an appreciative Citi Field home crowd that celebrated the achievement with a standing ovation. Then he hit another one in the sixth inning. The solo shot off of reliever Austin Cox extended New York's lead again, this time to 11-5. It also extended his new Mets record to 254 home runs. His second home run of the night again sent Citi Field into a frenzy. Strawberry went on to tally 335 home runs in a career that also included stints with the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees. But his 252 with the Mets previously stood as the franchise record. Alonso, 30, re-signed with the Mets on a two-year, $54 million contract in the offseason and will presumably have plenty of opportunities to add to his now-franchise-record home run tally. Alonso led the NL with 53 home runs in his rookie campaign in 2019. In the years since then, he has remained one of baseball's premier sluggers, with 34-plus home runs in each season that wasn't shortened by COVID-19. Tuesday's home runs was Alonso's 27th and 28th of the season in his 118th game, putting him well on pace to eclipse 30 home runs again, with 43 games remaining on New York's schedule. The Mets will need all they can get from Alonso as they fight for a spot in the playoffs. The Mets entered Tuesday's game amid a seven-game losing streak and having lost 11 of their previous 12. The slump dropped them to 63-55, six games behind the first-place Phillies in the NL East. That said, they remain in control of their playoff path, with a two-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the final wild-card berth in the National League.

Mariners win eighth straight behind George Kirby gem, move to 0.5 games back from Astros
The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in the American League and on the verge of becoming a division leader. With a 1-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, the Mariners took their eighth straight game and moved to a half-game back of the Houston Astros, who are currently playing the Boston Red Sox for first in the AL West. Should the Astros lose, it will be a tie atop the division with a month and a half to go. The Mariners had previously trailed by as many as seven games in early July. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The big turning point was the MLB trade deadline, when Seattle picked up the Arizona Diamondbacks' corner infield with separate details for third baseman Eugenio Suarez and first baseman Josh Naylor, plus Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Caleb Ferguson. The Mariners are 10-1 since the deadline passed on July 31. It was Naylor who came up big on Tuesday, delivering the only RBI of the game with a single in the first inning. Of course, the more valuable player for the game was starting pitcher George Kirby who struck out seven, walked none and allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings on 87 pitches. Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz combined for two more scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish off the shutout, the Mariners' ninth of the season. A rough stretch for the Astros has coincided with the Mariners' surge. They might have added at the deadline too with their Carlos Correa reunion, but a 2-8 stretch in late July and early August opened the door for Seattle and they had to place All-Star closer Josh Hader on the IL with a shoulder strain Tuesday. With a month and a half left in the season, the AL West is shaping up as a dead spring between the division's standard-setter of the past decade and the upstart with the AL MVP favorite plus plenty more young talent. For now, Seattle can definitely say momentum is on its side.
