
Xiaomi's AI glasses exceeding expectations amid consumer ‘enthusiasm', says executive
Consumer reaction to the AI glasses, debuted by company founder and chief executive Lei Jun at a corporate event in Beijing last month, was 'enthusiastic and unanticipated', Li Chuangqi, the executive in charge of the product, told local news portal Sohu.com.
Without disclosing exact figures, Li said sales were several times higher than initial 'pessimistic' estimates and that he was now looking at annual sales of over 5 million in three years, according to the Sohu report.
Xiaomi did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
Beijing-based Xiaomi entered the increasingly crowded AI glasses market – described by consultancy Counterpoint as a 'war of hundreds of smart glasses' – with a pair of frames priced at 1,999 yuan (US$278) in June.

They use the same Qualcomm chip that US social media giant Meta Platforms employed to power its Meta AI glasses, while featuring a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera for first-person video shooting and a range of AI-powered functions that include simultaneous translation and the ability to control other Xiaomi smart gadgets and electric vehicles.

The US and Nato are working on a novel approach to supply Ukraine with weapons using funds from Nato countries to pay for the purchase or transfer of US arms, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Trump, who initially took a more conciliatory tone toward Russia as he tried to end the more than three-year war in Ukraine, has threatened to start imposing tariffs and other measures if Moscow shows no progress toward ending the conflict by August 8. The president said last month the US would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not indicate how this would be done. Nato countries, Ukraine, and the United States were developing a new mechanism that would focus on getting US weapons to Ukraine from the Priority Ukraine Requirements List, known by the acronym PURL, the sources said. File photo: Reuters A Florida jury has found Tesla liable to pay US$243 million to victims of a 2019 fatal crash of an Autopilot-equipped Model S, a verdict that could encourage more legal action against Elon Musk's electric vehicle company. The verdict is a rare win for victims of accidents involving Autopilot. Musk has been pushing to rapidly expand Tesla's recently launched robotaxi business based on an advanced version of its driver assistance software. Jurors in Miami federal court awarded the estate of Naibel Benavides Leon, as well as her former boyfriend Dillon Angulo, US$129 million in compensatory damages plus US$200 million in punitive damages, according to a verdict sheet. Tesla was held liable for 33 percent of the compensatory damages, or US$42.6 million. Jurors found the driver George McGee liable for 67 percent, but he was not a defendant and will not have to pay his share. "Tesla designed Autopilot only for controlled-access highways yet deliberately chose not to restrict drivers from using it elsewhere, alongside Elon Musk telling the world Autopilot drove better than humans," Brett Schreiber, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement. "Today's verdict represents justice for Naibel's tragic death and Dillon's lifelong injuries," he added. Tesla said it will appeal. "Today's verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardise Tesla's and the entire industry's efforts to develop and implement life-saving technology," the company said.
