The NYT Mini is a quick and dirty version of the newspaper's larger and long-running crossword. Most days, there are between three and five clues in each direction on a five by five grid, but the puzzles are sometimes larger, especially on Saturdays. Unlike its larger sibling, the NYT Mini crossword is free to play on the New York Times website or NYT Games app. However, you'll need an NYT Games subscription to access previous puzzles in the archives. Here's today's, fitting for a Thor's Day (though just as fitting for an Odin's Day): Odin has challenged five Norse gods—Thor, Loki, Freyja, Tyr, and Baldur—to each build their own mighty mead hall in Valhalla. Each hall is made from a different material and has a different capacity (measured in barrels of mead: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000). The origin before Greek is likely from a Semitic language, possibly Hebrew gōrāl or Phoenician, though the exact root is uncertain. The term originally referred to red or pink precious coral.
