Law student faces 8 charges over death, arson and intimidation
The accused, Chew Hong Joe, 21, a second-year student at a private university in the Klang Valley, faced a total of eight charges.
He pleaded not guilty and claimed trial before Judge Rahimah Abd Majid and magistrate Dhilip Nair Atchuthan.
On the first charge, he is accused of causing the death of Tan Ah Gek, 72, at a house in Jalan Francis Khoo, Kampung Bukit Siput, at about 4am on July 25. The offence, under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code, carries a maximum prison term of 10 years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
For the second to sixth charges, Chew allegedly committed mischief by fire using petrol on five houses belonging to victims aged 42, 46, 72, 75 and 77. The alleged offences occurred at the same location, date and time. These charges fall under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine for each count.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Khalijah Khalid appeared for the prosecution, while Harcharanjit Singh represented the accused.
The prosecution did not offer bail, citing the seriousness of the offences, which are non-bailable under Section 388 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In the magistrate's court, Chew faced two additional charges under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, allegedly through notices affixed to the gates of two individuals, aged 49 and 54. The incidents are said to have occurred at a place of worship and at a residential property in Jalan Francis Khoo, Kampung Bukit Siput, and Taman Ria, at about 4am and 6.45am respectively.
Section 507 provides for a prison term of up to two years for each offence upon conviction. Magistrate Dhilip Nair Atchuthan granted bail of RM8,000 for the two charges.
Chew was arrested yesterday. Johor police chief Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad said he and his 19-year-old girlfriend were detained in Subang Jaya, Selangor, about a week after the incident.

Police probe TikTok account, launch disciplinary action in Zara Qairina case
THE Royal Malaysia Police has launched dual investigations into the case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, focusing both on misinformation spread online and alleged procedural failures by officers in the initial probe of her death. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu said police are investigating TikTok account @berjuanguntukzara for uploading inaccurate and misleading content. He warned that unverified claims could confuse the public and undermine the investigation. The case is being probed under the Sedition Act 1948, Penal Code Section 505(b) for causing public fear, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of online services. Separately, Bukit Aman's Integrity and Standard Compliance Department will open disciplinary proceedings against three Sabah police officers – a superintendent district police chief, an assistant superintendent CID head, and an inspector – for lapses in handling the case. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the officers failed in their supervisory responsibilities, including the investigating officer's omission to request a post-mortem. 'They must be held accountable. Firm action will be taken against those who failed to act or supervise properly,' he said. Zara, a Form One student at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar, was found unconscious in a drain near her hostel on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor. She died later at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. — Aug 16, 2025

Kelantan records 15 school bullying cases, 22 students detained
KOTA BARU: Kelantan police have recorded 15 cases of bullying in schools since January last year, leading to the arrest of 22 students. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the cases were logged between January last year and July this year in six districts: Kota Baru, Gua Musang, Tumpat, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Tanah Merah. He said all of the cases occurred in schools, and not in colleges or religious schools. Of the total cases, Kota Baru recorded the highest number with seven, followed by Pasir Puteh with three and Tanah Merah with two. Mohd Yusoff said most of the 22 students arrested were male. Four of the cases have been brought to court, while the others are still under investigation. He said all cases are being investigated under several sections of the Penal Code: Section 147 for rioting, Section 148 for possessing weapons during a riot, Section 323 for voluntarily causing hurt, and Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means. Mohd Yusoff said the situation in Kelantan remained under control, and police continued to monitor developments through school liaison officers. "Police, through our school liaison officers, not only monitor bullying cases in schools but also other criminal offences," he said.
