Russia needs an nuclear shield update to due to 'colossal threats', nuclear chief says
Russia's nuclear shield should be strengthened in coming years due to the "colossal threats" facing the world's biggest nuclear power, the head of Russia's state nuclear corporation said on Thursday. Russia and the United States are upgrading their nuclear arsenals - including the systems used to detect and intercept incoming nuclear-armed missiles - just as China ramps up its own nuclear capability far beyond those of Britain and France. "Now, in the current geopolitical situation, is a time of colossal threats to the existence of our country. Therefore, the nuclear shield, which is also a sword, is a guarantee of our sovereignty," Russian state news agency RIA cited Alexei Likhachev as saying. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Homeowners should take advantage of this scheme Compare Insulation Undo "We understand today that the nuclear shield must only be improved in the coming years." U.S. President Donald Trump in May unveiled plans for a so-called "Golden Dome" missile defence shield, inspired by Israel's land-based Iron Dome defense shield, that would cost at least $175 billion. However, military experts agree that no such shield can intercept all missiles, especially in the quantity that either Moscow or Washington could launch. Rahul Mamkootathil resigns as Kerala Youth Congress chief: Model Rini Ann George, writer Honey Bhaskaran accuse Palakkad MLA of sending obscene messages; party launches internal probe
NEW DELHI: Congress MLA from Palakkad, Rahul Mamkootathil, has resigned from the post of state president of the Youth Congress following allegations of obscene conduct made by writer Honey Bhaskaran and model-actress Rini Ann George, news agency ANI reported. The MLA is facing an internal party inquiry after George accused an unnamed 'young leader' of misbehaviour and sending her obscene messages, later revealing that she had already informed party leaders about his conduct. George alleged that despite her complaint, the leader continued to receive prominence within the party. In a media interaction, George claimed that Mamkootathil sent her repeated objectionable messages and even invited her to a hotel. She added that when she threatened to complain, the leader dared her to go ahead. 'Which woman will these politicians, who could not protect women in their own families, protect?' news agency PTI quoted George as saying. George said she finally spoke out after seeing similar allegations surface on social media. Honey Bhaskaran also alleged that Mamkootathil had harassed her through persistent social media messages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! On Wednesday, BJP workers staged a protest march to his office in Palakkad. Responding to the allegations, senior Congress leader and leader of opposition VD Satheesan said no leader would be spared if found guilty. He confirmed that a party-level inquiry had been initiated. 'We cannot punish someone based only on a message. But now a serious complaint has been raised. The party will examine it fairly,' he said. Satheesan emphasised that the party would not protect anyone based on their political stature. 'The Youth Congress leader must also be heard before action is taken,' he added. He also condemned the cyberbullying directed at the complainant, alleging CPI(M) groups were behind the trolling. Mamkootathil has not yet issued any public response to the allegations. Raj Thackeray-Devendra Fadnavis meet rekindles alliance buzz, Ajit Pawar reacts
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray held a hush-hush meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his residence on Thursday, with the timing triggering the buzz of another churn in the state's political meeting comes just a day after the alliance of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, in their first joint electoral contest, were routed in the BEST employees' co-operative credit society ROUTED IN BEST POLLSThe coalition failed to win any of the 21 seats in the polls. While the BJP-backed panel won seven seats, the panel backed by the BEST workers' union won 14. The loss of the Thackerays exposed the chink in their ground-level mobilisation and their impact as a whole. The polls had drawn attention as it was the first joint electoral contest by the Thackeray cousins, who last month united for a mega rally after 20 years of political estrangement and suggested that they would contest the upcoming municipal polls together. However, the election loss has come as a reality check for the Thackerays. More so because the voter base in the BEST polls consisted largely of Marathi-speaking employees, seen as the core support bloc of the Sena (UBT) and Wednesday, Fadnavis said the poll results reflected the failure of the "Thackeray brand". A day later, Raj Thackeray met him at his Varsha residence, fuelling speculation of a possible realignment ahead of BMC polls.'NO POLITICAL ANGLE'However, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar downplayed the meeting, asserting there was no political angle to it."Many leaders meet one another as well as with the chief minister, irrespective of whether they are in power or not. Maintaining communication with each other is the tradition of the state. There is no need to give a political angle to this meeting," PTI quoted Pawar as Raj Thackeray, in a press conference, clarified that he raised issues of town planning, traffic chaos, and the state of Mumbai's roads with the Chief Minister."Town planning is an important issue for me... Take any city, Mumbai, Thane, Pune. There is a planning issue. There is no traffic discipline. We are stuck with pigeons and elephants," he said, referring to the brouhaha over the ban on pigeon feeding and the relocation of Madhuri, the also took a swipe at the Fadnavis government on the redevelopment of the Dharavi slum."Just by giving land to Adani, Dharavi will not change. Rather than focusing on 'urban Naxals', these fundamental urban issues must be addressed," he further said.- Ends
