Grandfather of escaped New Orleans inmate pleads for grandson's surrender
The grandfather of one of the escaped New Orleans inmates is pleading for his grandson to turn himself in as authorities continue their search.
Lee Taylor, the grandfather of Antoine Massey, told CBS News that he's concerned for his grandson's safety.
"I haven't slept. I haven't been eating, and I've lost 15 pounds," Taylor told CBS News. "I'm worried about what's going to happen to him."
Massey is one of the 10 inmates who escaped a New Orleans jail on May 16 by yanking open a faulty cell door, removing a toilet, crawling through a hole in the wall behind it and scaling a barbed wire fence in the early morning hours. The jailbreak went unnoticed for hours.
Massey, 32, faces charges of kidnapping, rape, domestic battery involving strangulation and motor vehicle theft. In an Instagram post shared Friday, a person claiming to be Massey stated he is "innocent."
In an interview with CBS News, Massey's pastors added that his family members have been hurting, praying every Sunday for him to give up his time on the run and yield to authorities.
Pastor Robert Brown of Ray Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans says he would be happy to help facilitate Massey's surrender, if that would make him more comfortable to come forward.
"We are doing everything in our power to diffuse another jailbreak," Brown said. "I don't believe that no one should have to break out of jail to express themselves and tell their story, to be heard. We heard your story, Antoine. We need you to turn yourself in."
Massey's grandfather said the jailbreak came as a shock to him and Massey's family.
"It blew my mind," Taylor said.
Taylor added that law enforcement even searched his home, something he welcomed, but he's afraid that if a confrontation with law enforcement were to occur, it could end poorly.
"I give them credit for what they're doing because they keep me safe... That's their job, and I praise them for what they do," Taylor said of law enforcement searching for Massey. "But all I say, 'if you find him, treat him like a human being.'"
Massey's grandfather hopes he will turn himself in before the law catches up with him. He says Massey is a father of two — a 17-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son. "I just want him to give himself up. Show some love for your family," Taylor said. "They're wishing you could just give up while knowing that you're OK."
Massey and Derrick Groves are the two escapees who still remain at large, and officials have raised the reward to $50,000 per fugitive. At least 16 people have been arrested and accused of aiding the escape of the inmates, including Groves' on-again, off-again girlfriend, who worked at the jail in 2023, but was fired for allegedly bringing in contraband.
Meanwhile, Taylor says he hasn't heard from Massey since the escape, but he hopes Massey will hear his pleas."I want America to know that my grandson is not as bad as they think he is," Taylor said. "He's got a good heart. He just hasn't had the chance yet to really know what it takes for a man to be."

Christian music star Michael Tait admits to ‘double life' amid sexual assault, drug abuse allegations: ‘Sadly, largely true'
Grammy award-winning Christian rock singer Michael Tait admitted the drug abuse and sexual assault accusations against him are 'mostly true,' in his first public comments since the bombshell claims surfaced. Tait, the former frontman for Newsboys and DC Talk, said he was living a double life as he allegedly abused hardcore substances with younger men before making unwanted advances toward them, according to Christian media outlet The Roys Report. The 59-year-old addressed the accusations in an Instagram post titled, 'My Confession — June 10, 2025.' Burglars hit home of Bay Area death metal guitarist days after fatal police shooting
Two men have been charged with breaking into death metal guitarist Brian Montana's home to steal his credit cards and car just days after he was shot and killed by police following a violent neighborhood standoff, authorities said. Richard Vaka, of Newark, and Norman Desumala, of Fremont, were arrested June 5 after a South San Francisco Police Department investigation tied them to a burglary on the 300 block of Arroyo Drive that occurred May 2 — four days after Montana's fatal confrontation with police. The break-in took place shortly after 6 a.m., while the residence was unoccupied, according to police. Montana's friend Rob Estrada noted on Facebook that the guitarist's family still lived in the home, though they had stayed elsewhere immediately following the shooting. 'The suspects forced entry into a home that had been temporarily vacated following a tragic neighborhood incident, before stealing personal property and a vehicle,' the department wrote in a Facebook post on June 9. Detectives identified the suspects through a witness description and evidence that one of the stolen credit cards had been used at a Bay Area casino later that day. Vaka and Desumala were later taken into custody during an unrelated police encounter in Fremont, officials said. Vaka faces charges of first-degree burglary, vehicle theft and grand theft. Desumala has been charged with theft and fraud-related offenses. Both men were booked into Alameda County Jail and remain in custody. Montana, 60, was killed April 28 during an extended exchange of gunfire with police that began after a dispute with a neighbor over fallen tree debris. According to authorities, he fired multiple weapons — including a handgun, shotgun and rifle — at officers and homes before he was fatally shot. An early member of Possessed, Montana played on the band's influential 1984 'Death Metal' demo, widely credited with coining the name of the genre. Though he left before the release of the debut album, 'Seven Churches,' his role in the band's formation helped define its aggressive sound. The band paid tribute to Montana in an Instagram post shortly after his death. 'Brian Montana was a very nice guy,' the caption read. 'He was jovial and a gentleman. He was into martial arts and he was an excellent guitar player. Brian was always cracking jokes and he was a good person. Although we weren't in touch often and more than a phone call here and there. The Brian I know is from when we were still just kids back in the beginning of Possessed. He was nothing like what I'm seeing being written about him. In fact, I think that's one of the reasons that led to him leaving Possessed. He just wasn't willing to be as dark as we wanted him to be at that time. We were going for that evil imagery, and Brian was just so lighthearted, even goofy in a good way.' The band went on to ask for the public to respect the privacy of his family and close friends as they continue to mourn his death. 'He was obviously going through some struggles and I think this is the time to be respectful towards the Montana family and friends as this is a tragic time for them,' Possessed wrote. 'I'm sure there's a lot more to this story but that would be up to Brian's family to tell or not to tell. I know that I still feel this is a great loss and I'm deeply saddened.'
