The Nintendo Switch 2 launches this week — and it'll give a much-needed boost to Target and Best Buy

Whether it's Black Friday, a limited-edition Stanley Quencher, or something new from Taylor Swift, there's nothing like a blockbuster sales event to get retailers' juices flowing.
And at a time when trade chaos and economic uncertainty have dimmed the financial results for companies like Target and Best Buy, Thursday's launch of Nintendo's new Switch 2 gaming device is a welcome shot of good news in the retail world.
Both big box brands touted the device in recent earnings calls, with plans to tap into good-old-fashioned shopping enthusiasm, complete with midnight lines and commemorative merch.
"There's a ton of excitement for this, and we plan to be the retail destination for all things Nintendo Switch," Target chief commercial officer Rick Gomez said during an investor call on April 21.
Last week, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said some 70% of preorder customers are opting to pick their devices up in-store on launch day.
"Best Buy is uniquely positioned for the Switch 2 launch, being one of the only retailers opening their doors at midnight on June 5 for eager customers to pick up their consoles or grab another game," she said.
The companies have good reason to pull out the stops for Nintendo's hotly anticipated handheld device: Piper Sandler estimates that Best Buy's comparable sales will enjoy a 1% lift for each of the next four quarters due to Switch 2 sales.
Following a delay to asses the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs, Nintendo resolved some shoppers' concerns when the company said it would not raise the price of the device itself. Some accessories will see price increases, though.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in an earnings call that products destined for the US market are primarily manufactured in Vietnam, which would be subject to the 10% baseline tariffs under Trump's plan.
The company said it now expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 devices this fiscal year. In Japan alone, the company saw a flood of 2.2 million applications in two weeks to preorder the game console.
Most retailers tracked by Business Insider have already sold out of their available pre-orders.
To manage demand, Target said it is implementing a ticketing system, whereby store employees will distribute physical or digital tickets to shoppers in line before stores open, and that there will be a one-console-per-customer limit.
Best Buy said"nearly all" US stores will open at midnight on the East Coast, which means West Coast shoppers can get their hands on a Switch 2 minutes after 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The electronics retailer is even issuing a limited-edition coin to mark the occasion.
The popularity of the original Switch offers retailers a lot to be optimistic about at a time when consumers have gotten increasingly guarded about their dollars and (as Best Buy's Barry pointed out) tech companies haven't really been bringing a lot of newness, in terms of hardware.
"I think you're going to see a lot of innovations," Barry said of the gaming device category during last week's earnings call. "We continue to remain pretty excited about that space as well."

Switch 2 Scalpers Are Auctioning Off Their Preorders to the Highest Bidder

People hoping to score Nintendo's new console this week are finding them on resale websites—at several hundred dollars over the retail price of $450. The Nintendo Switch 2 Courtesy of Nintendo Nintendo's Switch 2 launch is underway worldwide. The console officially releases June 5, meaning buyers in territories in earlier time zones have already gotten their hands on it. As midnight rolls across North America, players here will do the same. Many fans preordered their Switch 2, allowing them to skip the in-person lines planned for midnight sales at retail stores. Others are currently bidding on consoles being sold by scalpers. Sellers on sites like eBay and Mercari have created their own ecosystem of preorder sales, capitalizing on fears that the ongoing tariff drama and possible stock shortages will make the Switch 2 scarce. The console, which retails at $450, is selling for several hundred dollars more on the resale sites. One listing, which promises to ship June 6, is selling for $849 or 'best offer.' Other listings are actively being bid on. On Mercari, consoles are selling in the $600 range and above. There are good reasons for people to be anxious. Nintendo has a history of supply shortages, including with the Switch 2's predecessor; in Japan, the company has already warned customers that demand may exceed supply. Nintendo prepared for the possibility of scalping ahead of the game console's preorder period; buyers who wanted a unit directly from their stores could only purchase one system per account and had to meet specific requirements, including 50 hours of playtime on their Switch account. Buyers who wanted to snatch more than one Switch could still place multiple orders through other retailers, like Amazon or Walmart. According to online message boards, some did; others confessed to buying from scalpers after failing to find their own. 'I have no shame,' wrote a user on the GameFaqs forum. 'Roughly 700.00 [USD]. Including priority air next day shipping…no Mario Kart bundle. I couldn't wait any longer.' Reached by WIRED, Nintendo would not immediately comment. Earlier this month, the company announced that it would be working with Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Yahoo Fleamarket, and Rakuten Rakuma to remove listings and ban users—but only in Japan. Crackdowns on the resale sites will begin June 5 as part of a probationary period. It's unclear if these measures will be implemented in other regions. The global market may also yet have a part to play. Nintendo made the unprecedented move of temporarily delaying preorders after the console's in-person unveiling, following extreme tariff announcements made by President Donald Trump. Although the price of the console itself hasn't been impacted—for now—many accessories are now more expensive than previously announced. As even older game consoles grow more expensive, it's not impossible that the Switch 2's price will increase after launch. Still, buyers turning to secondhand sellers may be left Switchless after all, due to preorder delays and cancellations. Earlier this week, some retailers were reportedly canceling preorders due to system errors or stock shortages.

Here's how to buy a Switch 2 at launch

The Switch 2 has finally arrived — well, at least in some parts of the world. Nintendo's latest console officially launches in the US tomorrow, June 5th, bringing with it more processing power, a larger 7.9-inch LCD display, and an all-new racing title in the form of Mario Kart World. Preorders for the $449 hybrid console remain sold out; however, if you're looking to grab one on launch day, rest assured that a handful of retailers have announced availability, both in-store and online. So far, Walmart, GameStop, Best Buy, and Target have all confirmed that they will have limited console stock on Thursday, June 5th. The same retailers will also offer the new Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Switch 2 camera, first-party carrying cases, and other accessories that are set to launch alongside the console later this week. We'll be publishing a ton of Switch-related coverage in the coming days — including our full Switch 2 review —but in the meantime, we've rounded up all the details you need to know if you want to attempt to secure a console on day one. After all, there's no telling what post-launch availability will be like, despite Nintendo's attempts to build up an inventory of its next-gen portable system to meet demand. Walmart Walmart customers will be able to snag a Nintendo Switch 2 at Walmart Supercenters starting on June 5th at 12AM ET / June 4th at 9PM PT, while supplies last. Online orders will open at the same time, with stock subject to availability. Walmart has confirmed its launch day slate will include the standalone Switch 2 ($449) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499), along with games and the following accessories: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54) Hori's Piranha Plant Camera ($59) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.88) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.88) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59) GameStop GameStop will have additional Switch 2 stock available both in-store and online when the console launches on June 5th. In-store launch events will kick off at 3PM local time on June 4th, with in-store pickups beginning on June 5th at 12AM EST / June 4th at 9PM PST. Online orders will also open on June 5th at 12AM ET/ June 4th at 9PM PT, according to GameStop spokesperson Nicolle Robles. GameStop hasn't detailed which console configurations will be available at launch, but we can assume the retailer will offer both the standalone console ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99), as well as games like Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ($79.99). We can also anticipate GameStop offering the following accessories: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller ($84.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($54.99) Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set ($24.99) Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector ($39.99) Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case ($84.99) Samsung's 256GB microSD Express Card ($59.99) Best Buy As detailed on Best Buy's landing page for the Switch 2, 'most stores will have a limited inventory of systems, games, and accessories for in-store purchase' beginning on June 5th at 12:01AM ET / June 4th at 9:01PM PT. Best Buy has stipulated that it anticipates people lining up ahead of the console's midnight release, including those who previously preordered the standalone console ($449.99) or the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) and are showing up for in-store pickup. A number of Switch 2 games and accessories will also be available to purchase online at launch; however, the retailer has specified that it will not be opening online orders for the console itself during launch week. Target If you missed the initial preorder window, Target has confirmed that it will offer both the standalone Switch 2 ($449.99) and the Mario Kart World bundle ($499.99) in-store on launch day, with online orders opening in the 'early morning' on June 6th. Consoles will be limited to one per guest, and according to its FAQ, there will be a 'designated queuing location' for customers to line up before stores open on June 5th. Target employees will distribute physical or digital tickets either until all tickets have been claimed or 10 minutes prior to opening. If you do manage to obtain one, your console purchase is guaranteed. As expected, Target will offer 'additional software, amiibo and accessories' while supplies last. The retailer wasn't clear on which accessories will be available on June 5th, though based on preorder availability, we expect the following:
