Troupe made his Broadway debut in 1957, starring as Peter in the original production of The Diary of Anne Frank.
Throughout his extensive career, he appeared in numerous television shows, including notable roles in Cheers and Star Trek, as well as films such as My Own Private Idaho.
He was married to actress Carole Cook from 1964 until her death in January 2023, and they were jointly honoured with an L.A. Ovation Award for Career Achievement in 2002.
Troupe also co-wrote and starred in the 1968 film Sofi, an adaptation of a play based on Nikolai Gogol's The Diary of a Madman.

'There were always murmurs' some clandestine activity was behind the unlikely end of the hit superhero series, and numerous data points that indicate the decision to take the show off the air was done hastily, Variety reported. A cliffhanger in the storyline to conclude the show's fourth season was not resolved, Variety reported. Cain had already penned multiple scripts and planned to direct multiple episodes in a planned fifth season that never materialized. 'The harassment [against the actor] took its toll on his relationship at the time with' Gabrielle Reece, the outlet reported in reference to Cain's one-time romance with the stunning model-volleyball player. The principal cast of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman included Cain, Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane, K Callan as Martha Kent, and late actors Lane Smith and Eddie Jones as Perry White and Jonathan Kent, respectively. The show starring Cain, who has been critical of Tinseltown politics in recent years, had also racked up five Primetime Emmy nods during its run. They included, in 1994, nods for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Main Title Theme Music and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Directing in a Drama Serie. In 1995, the series was nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Costuming; and in 1996 for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Drama Series.
