A children's summer programme supporting those on the autism spectrum is now entering its seventh year with a powerful new theme tying care to civic identity.
Titled 'Our Nation and Our King Unite Us,' the initiative was launched by His Excellency Ali Abdulhussain Al Asfoor, Northern Governor, with backing from the Ministry of Social Development and the Bahrain Autistic Society.
Values in action
H.E. Al Asfoor praised the collaboration's role in delivering not only developmental support but also a message of belonging for children often excluded from mainstream narratives. He extended appreciation to H.E. Osama bin Ahmed Khalaf Al Asfoor, Minister of Social Development, for providing the institutional foundation that has allowed the programme to grow.
The initiative combines educational, recreational, and therapeutic modules, helping enhance adaptive behaviour, reduce repetitive actions, and strengthen communication skills.
Families lead change
Parents have also been central to the programme's success. Their active participation, said the Governor, multiplies the programme's effectiveness and roots it in real community engagement.
This year's theme reflects a broader national approach that integrates identity and inclusion, ensuring that all children feel part of Bahrain's social fabric.
The Bahrain Autistic Society continues to play a vital role in advancing this model, ensuring that inclusive development is not just promised but practised.

Trump: U.S. to Set Up Food Centers in Gaza to Tackle Hunger Crisis

TDT | Manama President Donald Trump announced plans to establish food centers in Gaza in a bid to address the worsening hunger crisis in the war-stricken region. Speaking during a joint appearance with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland, Trump emphasized the humanitarian priority of feeding civilians, especially children, before taking any political steps. 'We're going to set up food centers where people can walk in—no fences, no barriers,' Trump said. 'We just want to get food to the people who need it most.' The president revealed that the U.S. has already committed $60 million toward food assistance and is working with European Union President Ursula von der Leyen to coordinate broader international support. He noted that several other countries have also expressed willingness to contribute. Trump admitted concerns about aid falling into the wrong hands, including Hamas, but maintained that helping innocent civilians must come first. 'We hope the food reaches those who really need it,' he said. On the issue of hostages still held in Gaza, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of negotiating for their release. 'We were able to get many out, but the last group is the hardest. They're used as shields,' he explained, adding that this has slowed down progress toward peace. While Trump praised the efforts of Israeli leaders and ongoing cooperation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said that finding a solution is complicated by the continued presence of hostages and deep-rooted tensions in the region. Despite the complex situation in Gaza, Trump stressed the importance of addressing humanitarian needs immediately. 'Before anything else—before politics or peace talks—we must feed the children. That's the priority,' he concluded. The U.S. food centers in Gaza are expected to be set up in partnership with allied nations, with open access and no physical barriers. According to Trump, the goal is to allow people to access essential supplies without delay or obstruction. 'This is about compassion,' he said. 'And we're ready to lead that effort.'

Bahrain Rates Youth Support

TDT | Manama A new national initiative will evaluate how public and private institutions in Bahrain support young people, marking a strategic shift toward embedding youth-focused policies into organisational structures. Announcing the launch of the 'Daem Al Shabab' (Youth Support) initiative, Youth Affairs Minister H.E. Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfeeqi said the effort is part of a wider national strategy that aims to empower Bahraini youth through structural reform and targeted engagement. The initiative was developed in line with the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports. Rewriting the Playbook 'Daem Al Shabab' introduces a formal classification system that assesses institutions on their youth empowerment efforts. Institutions will be evaluated using clear criteria based on their performance in employment, training, decision-making inclusion, and talent development. Those that lead in applying the highest standards will be placed in the Gold Category, while others that show clear commitment and contribute tangible results will be recognised in Category II. Minister Tawfiqi said the initiative is an extension of the Ministry's work to strengthen partnerships, encourage sustainable engagement, and open new pathways for youth involvement in all sectors. She described it as a means of institutionalising youth participation and ensuring it becomes a permanent feature of national progress. Incentives and Reform The classification aims to create a positive, competitive environment that motivates institutions to raise their standards. Distinguished organisations will receive incentives and special benefits in cooperation with the initiative's partners. Faisal Isa Alkhayyat, Director of Policy and Strategic Planning at the Ministry, presented the criteria.
