Falcons' Chris Lindstrom voted top interior offensive lineman by ap

Chris Lindstrom has spent much of his six-year career under the radar playing for an Atlanta team that hasn't made the postseason since 2017. But Lindstrom's play deserves much more attention, as his ability to create holes in the run game and protect the passer is a key part of Atlanta's offensive production.
Lindstrom has been the top-graded guard by Pro Football Focus for three straight seasons and has won the honor of being voted the top interior offensive lineman in the league by The Associated Press. A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players among guards and centers basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2, and 1 points. Lindstrom got three first place votes, two seconds, and one third to beat out Joe Thuney for the top spot. Thuney, who was traded from Kansas City to Chicago this offseason, got two first-place votes, one second, three thirds, and one fourth to finish second. Kansas City center Creed Humphrey got two first-place votes and finished third and Denver's Quinn Meinerz got the other first-place vote and came in fourth. Indianapolis' Quenton Nelson rounded out the top five. Baltimore's Tyler Linderbaum, Philadelphia's Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens, Baltimore's Daniel Faalele, and recently retired former Detroit center Frank Ragnow also received votes.
1. CHRIS LINDSTROM, Atlanta Falcons: Lindstrom has allowed just three sacks and 37 pressures on true pass sets the past three seasons, according to PFF, and has been a steady presence on Atlanta's offense. But Lindstrom really shines at run blocking when his ability to get in space on zone runs has helped fuel Bijan Robinson's success.
2. JOE THUNEY, Chicago Bears: Thuney has been one of the top guards in the league ever since being drafted by New England in 2016. He has been a first-team All-Pro the past two seasons in Kansas City and helped the Chiefs and Patriots reach the Super Bowl six times in his nine seasons. Thuney was forced to move out to tackle late last season for Kansas City but will be back at guard as a key piece in Chicago following an offseason trade.
3. CREED HUMPHREY, Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs were willing to part with Thuney in part because they were strong at the other interior spots led by Humphrey at center. Humphrey has taken the mantle from Jason Kelce as the top center in the league and made first-team All-Pro for the first time last season. Humphrey hasn't missed a game in four seasons and excels at both run and pass blocking.
4. QUINN MEINERZ, Denver Broncos: After being drafted in the third round from Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2021, Meinerz has made steady progress each season and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2024 to get on this list. Meinerz allowed just 12 pressures last season according to PFF and is a violent blocker in the run game.
5. QUENTON NELSON, Indianapolis Colts: Nelson's play has dropped a little in recent years, but the 29-year-old is still one of the top guards in the league. He was an All-Pro his first three seasons after being drafted sixth overall in 2018 and earned second-team All-Pro honors for the second time in his career last season. Nelson has made the Pro Bowl all seven seasons.

Seiya Suzuki homers as the Chicago Cubs cool off the Boston Red Sox with a 4-1 win

Seiya Suzuki hit a three-run homer, and the Chicago Cubs stopped Boston's 10-game win streak with a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Friday. Colin Rea pitched five effective innings for Chicago in the majors' first game after the All-Star break. Working around a season-high four walks, the right-hander allowed one run and four hits in his fourth consecutive win. Boston had won 12 of 13 to surge into contention in the rugged AL East. But Lucas Giolito got off to a shaky start, and the Red Sox left eight runners on base in the opener of a challenging six-game trip. Pitching for the first time since July 9, Giolito (6-2) walked his first two batters of the game. Suzuki then drove a four-seam fastball deep to center for his 26th homer, delighting the crowd of 41,011 on a picturesque afternoon at Wrigley Field. Nico Hoerner tacked on an RBI single for the NL Central leaders in the sixth. Giolito was charged with four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first loss since May 6. The right-hander went 5-0 with a sparkling 0.70 ERA in his previous six starts. Boston scored its only run on Roman Anthony's two-out RBI double in the third. Anthony's hit put runners on second and third, but Rea (8-3) escaped the jam by striking out Carlos Narváez. Brad Keller pitched a perfect eighth for Chicago before Daniel Palencia handled the ninth for his 13th save in 14 opportunities. Key moment: Boston had a chance to rally in the fifth, but Abraham Toro committed a costly mistake. With two runners on and no outs, Toro was doubled off second on Alex Bregman's liner to center. Key stat: The Cubs improved to 40-7 when they score first. Up next: Brayan Bello (6-3, 3.14 ERA) pitches for Boston on Saturday, and left-hander Shota Imanaga (6-3, 2.65) takes the mound for Chicago.

Injuries hit team Clark, rookies prepare for the WNBA all-star game

Caitlin Clark is out, but most of the WNBA's best are in for the league's All-Star Game. The Indiana Fever's injured superstar won't be able to play Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse when the team she drafted–Team Clark–faces Team Collier, picked by opposing captain Napheesa Collier. The events started Friday night with a 3-point contest headlined by event record-holder Sabrina Ionescu and a skills challenge. Clark had also been scheduled to compete in the 3-point contest. Here are a few things to note heading into the busy weekend. Injuries bog down Team Clark. Clark, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, will be sitting out after sustaining a groin injury in the Fever's game against the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday. As the player who received the most fan votes and the captain of Team Clark, Clark said she is looking forward to helping (coach Sandy Brondello) coach our team to a win in Thursday's announcement of her withdrawal. 'I will give the coaching hat to her as much as she wants to be, quite honest,' Brondello said. 'You've seen it with the Fever, she's been very active on the sideline when she wasn't playing.' Phoenix's Satou Sabally, a fellow starter on Team Clark, will also be sidelined. She announced Wednesday that she will be sitting out this weekend with an injured ankle. Aja Wilson, a third Team Clark starter, said Friday afternoon that it's still to be determined if she will play in Saturday's game after sustaining a wrist injury against the New York Liberty last week. The absence of two members of Team Clark led the league to appoint two replacements for the All-Star Game, bringing Washington's Brittney Sykes and Atlanta's Brionna Jones onto the roster Thursday afternoon. The Fever's Lexie Hull will be replacing Clark in the 3-point contest. Rookies on the roster: It's a young All-Star Game this year, with rookies Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron, and Kiki Iriafen making up the largest rookie contingent at the game since 2011. Citron and Iriafen are on Team Clark, and Bueckers is a starter for Team Collier. 'It's amazing,' Citron said. 'This rookie class is really talented, and I'm just happy that I'm one of the ones here. It's really cool.' Before the recent three-year string of rookie starters – Aliyah Boston in 2023, Clark in 2024, and now Bueckers – only seven rookies had ever been selected as All-Star starters in the game's 26-year history. A fun format: This year's All-Star format is different from last year's when the US women's Olympic team played against Team WNBA. This time, each team is headed up by a captain (Clark and Collier) who drafted players from a pool of selected All-Stars. It's a return to a more traditional format after the 2024 Olympic year shook things up. 'It's a little more loose, has that fun element to it,' Team Collier coach Cheryl Reeve said of this year's game. 'It's obviously very player centric, and you just want to have fun and enjoy the experience. It's for the fans, so it's a fun year.'
