Commanders sign former rugby player T.J. Maguranyanga
April 3 - The Washington Commanders on Thursday signed T.J. Maguranyanga, a former rugby player who is part of the NFL's International Player Pathway program.
Maguranyanga, 22, is listed as a defensive end. The Zimbabwe native played in the French Top 14 rugby league before heading to the football development camps at the IMG Academy in Florida in December.
He will not count against the Commanders' 90-man offseason roster. Per NFL guidelines, teams are allowed an additional spot in training camp and on the practice squad for designated players with international backgrounds.

Taking the pulse from fans about Rodgers, 41, was quite the exercise during a rain delay that pushed back the first pitch. And it was apparent that for all the items on Rodgers' agenda as he seeks to regain the form that allowed him to earn four NFL MVP awards, winning over the Steelers' rabid fan base is also a legitimate challenge. Master a new system. Mesh with new teammates. Adapt to a new city. Shoot, convincing Steelers Nation that he is the answer might be tougher than any of that. Of course, winning can change hearts and minds - and well, winning big when considering a franchise that has never had a losing season in coach Mike Tomlin's 18-year tenure but hasn't won a playoff game since 2016 - but there is no free pass. Never mind a grace period. Rodgers, whose one-year contract could pay $19.5 million with incentives and guarantees $10 million, according to ESPN, seemingly gets little, if any, grace from the fan base. "My honest opinion, I'm not happy about it," Ron Stadler, another lifelong fan, declared. "I wanted to see Mason Rudolph get a chance." He added, "I have a lot of friends that feel the same way." And a son, too. He summoned Ron Stadler, Jr., standing a few feet away. And the forty-something son was a lot less diplomatic. "No, not optimistic at all," Stadler, Jr. said. "I wish he'd have retired already. He sucks." Say what? About a four-time NFL MVP? "Look at his record the last three years," Stadler, Jr. shot back. "And he's almost as old as me. C'mon, Tomlin." Rodgers, set to participate in the Steelers' minicamp that opens Tuesday, joins a quarterback room that includes Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and sixth-round rookie Will Howard. His two seasons with the New York Jets included a torn Achilles tendon that wiped out his 2023 campaign after four plays and a meltdown in 2024 that extended way beyond the quarterbacking and including the early season firing of coach Robert Saleh. The skepticism for another fresh start, though, may be even worse when assessing reaction on social media since the much-anticipated news finally broke on Thursday that Rodgers would join the Steelers for his 21st NFL season. Maybe the most extreme damnation came from a (now-ex) Steelers fan who posted a video on social media that went viral. In the video, the man renounced his fan loyalty and burned a signed Minkah Fitzpatrick jersey. Sorry, Minkah. The jersey became a convenient prop. It's not like the five-time Pro Bowl safety is making the personnel decisions. "First off, why Minkah's jersey? That's bonkers," Cam Heyward, the veteran defensive tackle, said in a rebuttal post on X. "Second, why burn (it) when there are plenty of people who need clothes? Third, you're going to regret it." Leave it to Heyward, team captain and well-respected locker room presence, to lend a voice of reason to the mix. Still, from the jersey-burning guy to the handful of fans encountered at the baseball game, there's something to be drawn about the psyche of Steelers fans. As Tomlin is prone to state, "The standard is the standard. Jordan Love 'can't wait' to face Aaron Rodgers: 'Hopefully we can exchange jerseys' For followers of a franchise that has won six Super Bowls, that means a championship standard, which is why the drought cuts so deeply. Last season's championship visions, with Russell Wilson supplanting Justin Fields at quarterback, unraveled so fast down the stretch. The Steelers went from 10-3 in mid-December to losing their final five games, including another first-round playoff knockout. Maybe Rodgers will be the difference-maker at quarterback that Pittsburgh hasn't had since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. After all, Tom Brady was 43 during the 2020 campaign when he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl 55 crown. "I'm not going to hold my breath," Farrell said of the prospect of a deep playoff run. "I go into every season optimistic," she allowed. "I'm really hoping, although I don't like him, that maybe he changes things to the point that we win more than nine games." Hey, optimism isn't extinct after all. Voices of positivity remain. You just have to dig a bit deeper these days to find it coming from a Steelers fan. "I'm real excited," maintained Austin Patton, another Steeler fan lifer. "No other quarterback on the roster is better. His experience is huge. Tom Brady did the same thing." He knows. His is not the popular opinion. "A lot of people hate, but every year I think they're going to the Super Bowl," Patton added. "Maybe there's a bit of delusion..." Deion Sanders' health issue raising questions at Colorado
But it's unclear when Sanders is returning to Boulder. On Sunday, his eldest son Deion Jr. appeared on a YouTube livestream from the family estate in Canyon, Texas, where he said his father was in his room and "feeling well." "He'll tell y'all soon enough what he going through, what he went through," Deion Jr. said on the livestream. He suggested that when they return to Boulder was open-ended. "When we get back in Boulder, I don't know," Deion Jr. said June 8. "I'm waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I'll go. Until then, I'm gonna sit here with him." Sanders, 57, also canceled a scheduled speaking engagement scheduled for June 8 in Florida. The foundation instead replaced him with NBA legend Magic Johnson. In 2023, issues related to blood clots in Deion Sanders' legs led him to miss a Pac-12 Conference media event in Las Vegas. He has been accompanied in Texas by CU athletic trainer Lauren Askevold, who has helped him with his legs since the issue got serious in 2021, including the amputation of two of his toes and the removal of the sides of his left calf. Sanders has been out of the media spotlight since the NFL draft in April and suggested it was related to a health issue but didn't say what exactly. He mentioned it on a podcast with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel in late May. "I hope you're feeling better," Samuel said to Sanders. Samuel then asked him if he ever tried fasting. Sanders responded by saying "what I'm dealing with right now is at whole nother level" but said he's coming back after losing about 14 pounds. Last week, CU hosted separate camps for high school football players and eligible high school graduates. CU also is scheduled to host a youth football camp this week before a women's football clinic on Thursday. The university didn't immediately respond to a message asking if Sanders would be appearing at this week's camp activities. Green Bay Packers release star man Jaire Alexander weeks after QB Jordan Love made public plea to keep him
The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with Jaire Alexander, despite their quarterback's desperate plea, according to reports. The Packers are releasing the cornerback after an offseason of uncertainty sparked by two injury-plagued seasons for the 28-year-old. The franchise and player had agreed to explore a potential trade earlier in the offseason, according to Ian Rapoport. After failing to clinch a way out of Green Bay before the NFL Draft in April, the two parties reportedly also discussed a restructured contract. However, with neither option emerging, the Packers and Alexander move on with a clean break. Alexander played just seven of the team's 17 regular season games last season amid multiple injury woes. Over the past two years he's managed to suit up for just 16 of of the Packers' 36 games, including the playoffs, while in the last four years he's missed half of the franchise's regular-season games. Yet, despite his multiple stints on the sidelines, quarterback Jordan Love recently insisted that Alexander was essential to the team. 'He's definitely a player we need back,' Love told Kay Adams said when asked about the All-Pro cornerback back in April. 'He's a guy we need around,' he added during his appearance on FanDuel's 'Up & Adams Show'. 'Locker room, he's a character. That's a guy you never know what you're going to get. With Ja, he's always a guy that interacts with everybody on the team. He jokes around but he also has that serious side to him as a competitor.' Alexander, who was selected by the Packers in the first round in 2018, signed a four-year contract extension with Green Bay in 2022 with two years remaining on the $84 million deal. With Alexander owed $17.5million for the upcoming seasons, it proved tough for the Packers to seal a trade, particularly amid his injury woes. When healthy, Alexander is one of the most impactful cornerbacks in the league, having earned Pro Bowl nods twice. He is also a two-time second-team All-Pro in 2020 and 2021. He has 240 tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 12 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown this past season, and 70 passes defended in his seven-year NFL career.
