Rental car facility at Ford Airport celebrates construction milestone
CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan's first consolidated rental car facility reached a major milestone with a topping-off ceremony Tuesday morning at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport near Grand Rapids.
It was too windy to actually lift the beam to top off the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, but the ceremony involving 150 construction workers was held regardless. When the beam is placed, it will mark the structural completion of the second tallest building on the airport's campus.
'Today is a great milestone that we're excited about with the topping out of this project. There's a tremendous amount of effort from all of our team members on this job, not to mention a lot of pride involved in what we do,' Dave Williamson, executive vice president for West Michigan-based concrete contractor Kent Companies, told News 8.
Work begins on $156M Ford airport rental car building
The $156 million CONRAC is set to open in spring 2026. Once complete, the five-story structure will centralize all rental car operations into a single location, easing traffic congestion and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 500,000 pounds annually.
With construction about 60% done, airport officials say the project has supported more than 800 construction jobs and has generated a $220 million economic impact for the West Michigan region. Turner Construction is managing the project, with Kent Companies providing concrete and structural services.
Williamson said his company has devoted 165,000 man-hours to pour some 70,000 yards of concrete for the CONRAC.
'That's enough to fill 22 Olympic-sized pools,' Williamson said. 'There's enough reinforcing in this project to span from Grand Rapids to Albuquerque, just to give you an idea … just laid straight out.'
Fly nonstop to these 2 new cities from Ford Airport
The goal is to open the CONRAC next spring.
The CONRAC is part of ELEVATE, the airport's $600 million investment in transportation infrastructure.

Local Masonry Marvel: Apex Custom Concrete's Artful Approach to Stamped Patios
Oak Harbor, OH – Apex Custom Concrete & Masonry, a stamped concrete service provider, continues to revolutionize outdoor living spaces throughout Ohio by offering comprehensive stamped concrete solutions that deliver the aesthetic appeal of premium materials at a fraction of the cost. Operating under the philosophy 'Where Luxury Meets Nature,' the company has established itself as a premier destination for homeowners seeking to enhance their properties with durable, visually striking outdoor environments. This Ohio-based concrete company combines luxury craftsmanship with a cost-effective alternative to natural stone and brick. Stamped concrete technology has emerged as a transformative solution for property owners who desire the sophisticated appearance of natural stone, brick, or wood without the associated high costs and maintenance requirements. The process involves using specialized stamps and texturing mats to imprint patterns directly onto freshly poured concrete, creating surfaces that authentically replicate expensive building materials while maintaining the strength and longevity of traditional concrete. 'Mark and his company were awesome. They did a great job on all our stone work and flat work for our entire project. Chimneys and all,' said Chris Snyder, a satisfied customer who recently completed a large-scale project with Toledo's Decorative Concrete Patio Experts, Apex Custom Concrete & Masonry. 'They were very responsive and paid close attention to every detail of the project. And it was a big project I might add. The quality of work was top shelf. The crew working on the project was very experienced and friendly.' The growing interest in stamped concrete spans a remarkably diverse audience, reflecting the material's versatility and broad appeal across multiple sectors. Homeowners represent the primary demographic seeking stamped concrete solutions, particularly those with a keen interest in enhancing their property's aesthetic appeal while maintaining functional durability. These individuals often pursue landscape design projects that involve the strategic arrangement and modification of outdoor spaces for both aesthetic and practical purposes. Construction professionals constitute another significant segment of the stamped concrete market, drawn to its innovative and cost-effective properties as an alternative to traditional materials. Real estate professionals have also developed a keen appreciation for stamped concrete installations, recognizing the substantial value these improvements can add to residential and commercial properties. The material's ability to transform ordinary concrete surfaces into sophisticated design elements makes it particularly attractive to property developers and real estate investors seeking to maximize return on investment. DIY enthusiasts and creative individuals represent an increasingly important market segment, eager to experiment with the diverse design possibilities that stamped concrete offers. These individuals are drawn to the material's flexibility in mimicking various textures and patterns, from cobblestone paths reminiscent of European villages to sleek, modern geometric designs. The creative freedom afforded by stamped concrete allows for personalized expressions that reflect individual tastes and architectural preferences. The seasonal nature of stamped concrete projects creates predictable demand patterns throughout the year. Spring and summer months typically see the highest activity levels, as warmer weather provides optimal conditions for concrete pouring and setting. During these seasons, homeowners are most motivated to undertake outdoor improvement projects, capitalizing on favorable weather conditions and extended daylight hours. The timing coincides with increased outdoor living activities and the desire to maximize enjoyment of exterior spaces. Stamped concrete applications extend far beyond traditional residential patios and walkways, demonstrating remarkable adaptability across diverse environments. Outdoor spaces such as driveways, pool decks, and garden pathways represent common residential applications, where the material provides enhanced visual appeal while maintaining the durability required for high-traffic areas. Swimming pool surrounds particularly benefit from stamped concrete's unique properties, offering attractive, non-slip surfaces that withstand constant moisture exposure and chemical contact. Commercial applications have expanded significantly, with stamped concrete appearing in shopping malls, restaurants, theme parks, and various public spaces. These installations demonstrate the material's capacity to handle heavy foot traffic while maintaining aesthetic integrity over extended periods. The versatility of stamped concrete makes it suitable for environments requiring both functional performance and visual appeal, from corporate campuses to municipal parks and recreational facilities. The installation process for stamped concrete involves specialized techniques that distinguish it from conventional concrete applications. The process begins with pouring standard concrete onto the designated area, followed by the critical step of impressing patterns and textures onto the surface before the material sets. This timing-sensitive procedure allows for the creation of intricate geometric patterns, natural stone textures, wood grain appearances, and countless other design possibilities. The final result produces a durable, low-maintenance surface that combines the structural benefits of concrete with the aesthetic appeal of premium materials. One of stamped concrete's most compelling attributes is its design versatility, which enables the replication of expensive materials at a fraction of the cost. The material can convincingly imitate natural stone, brick, slate, wood planks, and tile, providing homeowners and businesses with luxury aesthetics without the associated expense and maintenance requirements of authentic materials. This versatility extends to color options, allowing for customization that complements existing architectural elements and landscape features. The maintenance advantages of stamped concrete contribute significantly to its growing popularity among busy property owners. Unlike natural materials that may require frequent sealing, replacement of individual elements, or specialized cleaning procedures, properly installed stamped concrete requires minimal ongoing maintenance. Regular cleaning and periodic resealing represent the primary maintenance requirements, making it an attractive option for individuals seeking aesthetically pleasing yet practical solutions for their outdoor spaces. Society benefits substantially from increased awareness and understanding of stamped concrete technology and applications. Better-informed consumers can make more strategic decisions about home and community improvements, leading to enhanced durability and aesthetic appeal of both private and public structures. Improved public knowledge can foster greater community engagement as residents become more aware of the potential for transforming public spaces through artful concrete applications. Enhanced public understanding of stamped concrete can drive demand for higher-quality materials and superior workmanship, promoting business growth within the decorative concrete industry. This increased demand supports local contractors and suppliers while encouraging innovation and improvement in installation techniques and material development. The economic ripple effects benefit communities through job creation, increased property values, and enhanced quality of life through improved public and private spaces. Apex Custom Concrete & Masonry offers an extensive range of stamped concrete patterns and applications, including random stone textures that mimic natural fieldstone, ashlar cut slate with hand-tooled joints, and classic wood grain patterns featuring bold textures with realistic plank appearances. The company's expertise extends to specialized applications such as pool decks, outdoor entertainment areas, garden pathways, and driveways, each requiring unique considerations for durability, safety, and aesthetic integration. The stamped concrete process implemented by Apex involves multiple critical phases designed to ensure optimal results and longevity. The company begins with comprehensive foundation preparation, including proper subgrade and subbase establishment to support the structure's weight and prevent future cracking. Following precise form layout and material collection, skilled technicians incorporate color additives either through integral coloring mixed directly into the concrete or broadcast color hardeners applied to the surface. The stamping phase represents the most technically demanding aspect of the process, requiring careful timing and expert technique. Apex technicians apply color-releasing agents to textured stamping mats to prevent adhesion to uncured concrete, then systematically place stamps to achieve seamless pattern continuity. The company's experience enables them to navigate the narrow window between concrete workability and initial setting, ensuring crisp, well-defined impressions that accurately replicate the intended material appearance. Pool deck applications have become increasingly popular among Apex clients due to stamped concrete's heat-resistant properties and enhanced slip-resistance when properly sealed. Unlike traditional pool decking materials that can become dangerously hot or slippery, professionally installed and sealed stamped concrete provides a comfortable, safe walking surface that withstands chlorine exposure and frequent water contact while maintaining its decorative appearance. Outdoor entertainment areas represent another significant application area where Apex's expertise proves invaluable. The company specializes in creating integrated outdoor kitchen spaces, fire pit areas, and dining zones using stamped concrete surfaces that complement existing landscaping while providing durable, fire-resistant foundations for cooking equipment and gathering spaces. Beyond stamped concrete, Apex Custom Concrete & Masonry provides comprehensive masonry services including traditional stone work, brick construction, concrete engraving, micro etching, and custom step installation. This diverse service portfolio enables the company to create cohesive outdoor environments that seamlessly blend multiple materials and techniques for maximum visual impact and functional performance. The economic advantages of stamped concrete become particularly apparent when compared to natural material alternatives. While basic concrete costs typically range from $110 to $165 per cubic yard, stamped concrete represents a modest premium over standard installation but delivers savings of thousands of dollars compared to natural stone, brick, or premium tile installations. Complex designs featuring curved pathways, elevation changes, and intricate patterns may warrant professional installation to ensure optimal results and avoid costly mistakes. Maintenance requirements for stamped concrete installations remain minimal compared to natural alternatives. Regular debris removal, periodic pressure washing, and professional sealing provide comprehensive protection against UV damage, moisture penetration, stains, and normal wear patterns. Properly maintained stamped concrete surfaces can maintain their appearance and structural integrity for fifty years or more, representing exceptional long-term value for property owners.
