Punjab: Mann seeks support of panchayats for anti-drug drive
Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday sought support of village panchayats for his government's ongoing anti-drug drive 'Yudh Nasheyan Virush' and announced financial assistance for villages declared as "drug free".
Mann further promised to develop these villages into model villages and also announced to hike honorarium for 'Sarpanchs' to ₹2,000 per month.
He was addressing a gathering during the state-level function to mark 'Panchayat Diwas' here.
A village that will declare itself "drug-free" will be given financial assistance worth ₹1 lakh, besides other ultra-modern facilities, Mann said.
Drug free villages will be developed as model villages and no stone will be left unturned to give fillip to their development, he said.
He asked village 'Sarpanchs' to play a proactive role in this noble cause so that the scourge of drugs is wiped out from the state with active public support.
Mann said the state government will not sit idly and watch smugglers bloom at the cost of bodies and pyres of drug victims.
The state government has already snapped the supply line of drugs and big fish involved in this heinous crime have been put behind bars, the chief minister said.
For the first time, the property of the drug smugglers acquired illegally is being destroyed by the state government so that it acts as a deterrent for others, he added.
Meanwhile, Mann announced that Sarpanches would be given an honorarium worth ₹2,000 per month starting from the day they were elected.
Earlier his predecessors had promised ₹1,200 as honorarium but that decision never saw the light of the day, he said.
Village panchayats are the most significant organ of the democratic system which has been instrumental in transformation of the rural areas. They are known as 'foundations of democracy' and play a major role in implementing the policies of the state government at the ground level.
He reiterated that the state government is committed to extend all possible support and cooperation to the Sarpanchs as they played a pro-active role in the process of overall rural development.
They are the real eyes and ears of the state government as they are well connected with the masses at ground level, he said.
He said that it is very unfortunate that several works in villages are jeopardised due to widespread groupism in the villages. Sarpanchs must accord top priority to abolish groupism in villages.

No meaningful work done for people by AAP govt in Punjab: Haryana CM Saini
Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini lashed out at the AAP government in Punjab on Saturday, alleging that it has not done any meaningful work for the welfare of people. Saini further claimed that the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab "no longer enjoys any public support" and said in the June 19 Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll , people will decide in the right direction. Saini visited Sangrur on Saturday to condole the death of veteran Akali leader and former Union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa . He met Dhindsa's son and former Punjab finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa and expressed his grief. Talking to reporters in Sangrur, the Haryana chief minister alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab was formed on a "foundation of lies". "This government has neither done any meaningful work for the welfare of people nor does it have the will to work. Now, the people of Punjab have understood this truth," he claimed. Live Events The Mann government has "completely failed" to fulfil the promises it had made to people during elections, Saini said. He said the AAP has been exposed in Delhi, because "lies do not last long". "It no longer has any public support in Punjab and in the Ludhiana West bypoll, people will decide in the right direction," he said. Saini launched an attack on Punjab Chief Minister Mann, saying he should work for the welfare of people rather than indulging in "theatrics". Referring to the Ludhiana West bypoll, he said the voters have made up their mind that Punjab should also move ahead at a fast pace under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The bypoll to the Ludhiana West Assembly seat in Punjab is scheduled to be held on June 19 and the counting of the votes will be taken up on June 23. Saini accused the AAP government of not implementing the Centre's welfare schemes in Punjab and depriving people of their benefits. Talking about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Haryana, Saini said for the last 11 years, public welfare schemes are being implemented effectively under the leadership of Modi. He said the Haryana government is purchasing all crops from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Similarly, the Punjab government should also worry about the farmers of the state and give them a fair price for their crops, he said. Saini said in the event of crop loss due to natural calamities, the Haryana government has provided a total compensation amount of more than Rs 15,500 crore to farmers in the last 10 years. Besides, vegetable-growing farmers are being given relief under the "Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana", he added. The people of Haryana are also getting the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana , while the people of Punjab are being deprived of those, he said.

Samana accident: CM assures probe into tipper-trucks misused for illegal mining
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday met protesting family members of the seven schoolchildren who died when their SUV was hit by a tipper-truck on the Patiala-Samana state highway and assured them of a probe into the May 8 accident. Mann said that he would order a high-level probe into the plying of overloaded tipper-trucks that were being misused for illegal sand mining. 'I've already ordered the transport and police departments to conduct a statewide drive to check the licences of truck drivers and fitness certificates of heavy vehicles. Most tipper-trucks are overloaded. I hope that the sacrifice of these children won't go in vain, and we will unearth the nexus of illegal mining,' the chief minister said. Asked about the involvement of an Aam Aadmi Party MLA in the business of tipper-trucks, Mann said no one would be spared even if he was an AAP legislator or worker for shielding the accused or interfering in the police investigation. The CM said that strict action would be taken against police officials, who delayed action in the case. Following his assurance, the family members and scores of local residents lifted their four-hour blockade near Bhakra overbridge on state highway number 10 between Patiala and Samana. They were demanding justice for the seven children and their driver, who were killed when they were returning from school and their Toyota Innova was hit by an overloaded tipper-truck a month ago. The protesters alleged laxity by the civil administration and police in arresting all accused in the case. The truck was being driven by a 19-year-old with no licence for heavy vehicles. Records showed that the truck's fitness certificate had expired in January 2024 and its pollution certificate in July 2023, while its road tax was valid up to December 2023. In addition, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Yamunanagar, Haryana, had issued a challan for the truck way back in December 2022. Though the driver was arrested, the parents of the children demanded that the truck owner, Randhir Singh, also be held accountable and sent behind bars. Local MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra has also been at the receiving end of protests for his alleged association with the truck owner. He has, however, denied shielding the accused.
