I should have been giddy. I'd just moderated an author talk at the Harvard Book Store — my own personal Madison Square Garden — before a crowd of women. I asked good questions; I left 'em laughing.
But I also felt like a sack of loose potatoes, angling my body this way and that on a wobbling metallic stool. I chose a formless black dress and sucked in my stomach with all manner of Spanx. When I got home and peeled off my armor, my skin had red indentations. And, when the author and the bookstore shared photos from the event, I winced. I didn't post on Instagram. I didn't tag myself with a perky caption.

I thought: I really used to like how I looked, and I just don't anymore. This has to change, even if my appetite changes with it.
And so I visited my primary care doctor and asked for ideas, knowing that several friends already took similar drugs with good results. He immediately suggested Zepbound. I qualified: At just 5′1, I was about 30 pounds overweight, with a pesky ring of visceral fat around my belly. Beyond that, I have a family history of heart disease. My cholesterol, while not awful, was borderline. My insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, approved coverage right away.
Getting the prescription was the easy part. The challenging part came later: I worried that I was wimping out by not embracing the evolution of my 40-something body, whose metabolism was slowed by perimenopause, hindered by SSRIs (often implicated in weight gain but necessary to manage panic disorder), and the birth of two very large children.
There was an element of feeling like I was letting myself — and all of womanhood — down, by caving to Big Pharma and Big Vanity, not to mention relinquishing a part of my personality.
When my teenager began medication for ADHD, he asked me: Will I still be funny? Now that I was prescribed Zepbound, I wondered: Would I still like to eat? Dim sum brunch was the highlight of any weekend. I threw elaborate dinner parties with friends based on obscure themes. I write about restaurants in this very newspaper, for God's sake.

Who would I be if I didn't love food?
But there was also a more pressing issue: Would I be anyone at all if I continued on this semi-unhealthy trajectory? I come from a long line of people with cardiac problems. Both of my grandmothers were,

, buxom. But my Nana wore a girdle; now, I had an injector pen. There was a tool that could potentially help me feel better and live healthier. Why struggle without it?
On the advice of a friend, I injected the first vial on a Monday, so I wouldn't ruin my weekend with potential side effects. I shot into my stomach. It didn't hurt; just a slight click and the dose was done. A metallic taste flooded my mouth immediately; a quick Reddit scroll confirmed that this was common. That night, I became nauseated, similar to the first trimester of pregnancy. Vomiting would have been appealing. I didn't eat much dinner, and I belched like a frat boy for a few hours while trying to focus on 'The White Lotus.'
By Tuesday, I was unhungry. It wasn't that I felt sick; eating just wasn't central to my mind-set. The perpetual hum in my mind — when would I snack again? what was for dinner? — evaporated. When my husband suggested salmon and broccoli, I didn't fixate. That was fine. I didn't really care. I ate a small portion; when I was done, I was done. Wednesday was similar: I had a banana and yogurt, and I swapped my morning walk with a friend for coffee at home, just in case I needed a bathroom. At dinner, I had one slender slice of pizza. There was no want. It wasn't until my hunger had vanished that I realized how much space food, and the pursuit of it, occupied in my mind.

I was quite pleased until Friday morning, when I woke up early to go to Pilates. Exercise is also a crucial complement to weight-loss drugs. They aren't a golden ticket to sloth and inactivity. I still have to move, and I still need to eat right, because nutrients are so important if your body isn't naturally cueing you up for hunger.
But my cramping reminded me of the early throes of childbirth. I could hardly sit up straight. Two Gas-X solved the issue, and I forced myself to class — and told my instructor that I'd started a new drug and not to panic if I just laid flat on my reformer. Awesome, she said, as if I told her I was going to Tahiti. I made it through.
By the weekend, I felt completely back to my old self, with one important change: I could regulate my food intake. When we grabbed dinner from Five Guys after my son's late basketball game on Friday night, I had 10 delicious fries, not the whole carton. I slurped half a chocolate shake, not the whole damn thing.
On Sunday, I celebrated a pal's birthday brunch at Foundry on Elm in Somerville. I shared poutine. In the past, I would have mindlessly swiped eggs through gravy until the skillet was dry. Instead, I was pleasantly satiated halfway through. It really was that simple: For the first time in years, I actually felt full.

Now, a few weeks in, my GI woes have resolved, my appetite is modest but present, and I've shed 6 pounds. And here's the thing. I still eat; I just do less of it, more slowly and mindfully. It's like going to the movies: You can appreciate cinema. You can lose yourself in the story. You can relish every frame, but you also know when it's time to leave the theater. You don't need to see the same show four times in a row.
Part of me does think Zepbound is like AI for weight loss, a modern cheat that's almost too easy. I sometimes feel that anything worth doing should be pursued the old-fashioned way — diet, exercise — even if the results don't come because of other medications, genetics, or age.
But most of the time, I'm content with my choice, because the truth is: I'm losing weight on this medication. I feel better, I look better, and the side effects are manageable. I trust my doctor, who assures me that it's safe. Friends who take it feel similarly, and so do the thousands of people I've met on message boards (there are plenty of them!) on a similar journey.
And, most of all, I still love food. I just want to be around as long as possible to enjoy it.

At just nine years old, a child today can hold the world in their hands – yet lose touch with the one around them. For much of Generation Z, this is a reality. Like many kids, I got my first phone not because I needed one, but because peer pressure made it feel like I'd be left behind without it. After countless months of begging my parents, they bought me my first phone. With a brand new iPhone 7 in hand, I felt like I had unlocked the rite of passage. However, once I downloaded popular social media apps – Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok – my life turned around. Social media exposed me to conversations that I wasn't ready for. There comes a point in a child's life when they start to become subject to peer pressure. According to Children's Health , peer pressure begins as early as age ten with the formation of friend groups in elementary school. Peer pressure can come in many different shapes and sizes: what you wear, how you act, and now, whether you own a phone. When it comes to peer pressure caused by phones, it more specifically goes under the category of ' social conformity . ' Social conformity is the tendency for one to adjust their thoughts, beliefs, or lifestyle to align with those in a group or a social norm. The tendency for children or teenagers to succumb to social conformity is becoming more and more prevalent in this day and age. Social media is dangerous. While it isn't physically dangerous, social media has created a culture of comparison and hate speech. According to the Anti-Defamation League's annual survey , up to 22% of Americans reported experiencing hate speech online. For children and teens, especially, this can be harmful. The harm is rooted in a child's maturity level. Now more than ever, before children develop proper emotional and psychological tools, they are shown explicit and harmful content. Instead of connecting and building confidence, kids often find themselves isolated and insecure. In fact, a survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health questioned 14-24-year-olds on how UK social media has impacted their health. The results revealed that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image, and loneliness. As social media platforms continue to shape young minds, it's important to make a change. While it's nearly impossible to disconnect children from social media completely, we can reform these platforms from within. Now, more than ever, it's crucial to enforce extra precautions through stricter content moderation, promoting digital literacy, and holding platforms accountable for the harmful environments they create. Together, we must aim to create a space that fosters well-being and connection rather than harm and isolation. Related

The decline of drinking, explained in one chart
is a senior editorial director at Vox overseeing the climate teams and the Unexplainable and The Gray Area podcasts. He is also the editor of Vox's Future Perfect section and writes the Good News newsletter. He worked at Time magazine for 15 years as a foreign correspondent in Asia, a climate writer, and an international editor, and he wrote a book on existential risk. Today, around 8,200 or so Americans will turn 21. Which means, of course, they will become eligible to engage in that time-honored habit of adulthood: drinking alcohol. (I'm sure absolutely none of them did so before they turned 21. I certainly did not, or at least, would not admit to doing so in this piece, which I know my parents read.) Yet those who get the chance to legally order a beer or a wine or, God help them, a Long Island iced tea, may find the bar a little less crowded these days. According to a new survey released by Gallup this week, just 54 percent of Americans now say they drink alcohol. That's the lowest share since Gallup began tracking the question way back in 1939, six years after Prohibition was repealed. Even Americans who do continue to drink say they are drinking less, and say they're increasingly concerned about the health impacts of alcohol. A narrow majority of Americans say that even moderate drinking is unhealthy, while reported drinking frequency also hit record lows. (Only 24 percent reported having a drink over the past 24 hours, while 40 percent said it had been more than a week since their last glass.) And while you might be skeptical of self-reporting drinking habits — doctors certainly are — the most recent sales data says that per-capita ethanol consumption in the US has fallen from nearly 2.8 gallons in the early 1980s to around 2.5 in 2022. Related Unless you happen to be in the booze business, this shift is 100-proof good news (with a few caveats). Drinking can lead to various social and medical ills, from the familial and financial devastation of alcoholism at the high end to increases in the risk of cancer and other diseases even at the lower end. But in a culture which seems to celebrate and encourage drinking, what's up with more Americans putting down their glasses? No safe level Americans of a certain age — i.e., me — probably remember hearing that a glass of red wine a day could be good for you. Which, looking back, seems absurd. Ethanol in any form is a toxin. But thanks in part to what became known as the 'French paradox' — the fact that the French showed low levels of heart disease despite their love of rich, fatty foods and glasses of Bordeaux — conventional wisdom settled on the idea that moderate drinking could actually benefit our overall health. If only. In the argot of Alcoholics Anonymous, medical science is having a 'moment of clarity' around alcohol. It turns out that 'no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health,' as the World Health Organization put it in 2023. One major meta-analysis that same year found that there are in fact no mortality benefits at low levels of alcohol consumption, and that risk for a number of health threats rises as consumption increases. The decline and fall of teen drinking Whether or not American adults are actually listening to their doctors, the decline in alcohol consumption is real. What's even more remarkable — and even better news — is the sharper decline in drinking among people who legally shouldn't be doing it at all: the underage. In 2024, according to one long-running youth survey, 42 percent of 12th graders reported drinking alcohol, down significantly from 75 percent in 1997 (which happens to be the year I graduated high school, and no, I will not be commenting on which side of the survey I fell on). For 10th graders it was 26 percent (down from 65 percent) and for eighth graders it was 13 percent (down from 46 percent in 1997, which yikes). For those underage Americans who are drinking, the percentage who engage in binge drinking has also fallen in recent years, albeit less sharply. Alcohol is really bad — with one caveat Here's one of the more unbelievable stats I've ever seen: scholars believe that something like 40 percent of all murders involve the use of alcohol. That's just one example of the effects of dangerous levels of alcohol consumption. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates around 178,000 excess deaths each year from alcohol abuse, of which over 12,000 were deaths in drunk driving accidents — meaning one out of every three car crash deaths might not have happened without alcohol. Less alcohol consumption means less of all of this. Fewer violent deaths in drunken homicides or car crashes, and fewer lives cut short over the long term because of alcohol-connected illness. It means fewer families torn apart by alcohol abuse, and fewer children who endure the long-term trauma of being the child of an alcoholic. To be clear, I'm not suggesting everyone stop drinking — or start drinking just to make friends. I myself enjoy a drink, and for now I'm comfortable with the trade-off that comes with moderate drinking. But the benefits to the country overall of less drinking are impossible to dismiss. Personal trainer recommends the one arm plank as the perfect way to upgrade your core workouts — I gave it a try

The plank is a great exercise for building core strength, but it's not the most exciting move you can do. It's quite the opposite, in fact, with the aim being to stay as still as possible. There are plenty of ways you can vary your planks, though, and the alternating one arm plank is one that's well worth trying. I saw the move recommended by personal trainer Kyle Knapp on Instagram, who describes it as 'simple but effective'. Having now tried the one arm alternating plank myself I would take issue with the idea that it's a simple move, but it's certainly effective for challenging your core and building strength. You don't need any equipment to do the alternating one arm plank, though performing the move on a yoga mat can help with grip, especially for your feet which will need to bear a bigger load than with the classic plank when you lift an arm off the floor. How to do the alternating one-arm plank Knapp demonstrates the move in his Instagram post, giving some useful pointers on how to do it most effectively You set up in a high plank position, with your hands supporting your upper body rather than your forearms. Then spread your feet wider than you would for a normal plank — this is vital for keeping your balance when you lift one hand off the floor. Lift one hand slowly up off the floor to your waist, aiming to keep the rest of your body as still as possible. Try not to buck your hips up in particular, or sway them over to the side where your hand is still grounded to compensate for the lack of support on the other side. Aim to complete five to 10 slow reps on each side, and if you're struggling with the move then you can build up the core strength for it by doing more of the standard high plank. Another good move to help build up to the one arm plank is the dumbbell plank drag. How hard is the alternating one-arm plank? I added the move into a longer core workout and it was notably harder than the regular plank. At first I thought the move was nigh-on impossible, because I set up with my feet together and didn't have the strength to support myself on one arm. Once I rechecked Knapp's post and got my position right, it became hard, but manageable. I added the move into a longer core workout and it was notably harder than the regular plank. You really have to brace your core and glutes to maintain the plank position while lifting one arm, and it was hard to get through five reps on each side without starting to rush. It's an effective core move that I'll continue to do in future workouts, and the extra movement you do compared to the classic plank makes it a more engaging exercise and keeps you focused on using your core muscles. Once you become comfortable with the alternating one arm plank you can progress again to the renegade row, which is a similar exercise where you hold dumbbells, lifting them up to your chest when you raise each hand.
