Sid Gornall, who lives in Holgate, has welcomed the publication of new research highlighting the early success of mitochondrial donation – a pioneering form of IVF designed to reduce the transmission of certain types of mitochondrial disease.

As The Press has previously reported, his son Bill, who is now 13 and goes to Manor CE School, was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease MELAS in 2020, a rare disorder that begins in childhood and mostly affects the nervous system and muscles.

"It gives much needed hope to any families who have children battling this devastating disease but also gives great hope for parents who have lost children.
"All of the fundraising is in the hope that one day a treatment or a cure will be found. This weekend we will spend time with other families supported by the Lily Foundation and celebrate this incredible breakthrough and strengthen our resolve to spread the word about mitochondrial disease and continue fundraising to find a cure."
Sid Gornall has fundraised for the Lily Foundation (Image: Supplied) The Lily Foundation is the UK's leading mitochondrial disease charity, and says the technique offers the potential for parents to have healthy, genetically related children without passing on faulty mitochondrial DNA.
Liz Curtis, founder and CEO of the Surrey-based charity, said: 'After years of waiting, we now know that eight babies have been born using this technique, all showing no signs of mitochondrial disease. For many affected families, it's the first real hope of breaking the cycle of this inherited condition.'
Mitochondrial disease is caused by faults in the mitochondria – tiny structures within cells that produce over 90 per cent of the body's energy. Every year, around one baby in 5000 is born with mitochondrial DNA mutations that can cause the disease. Despite years of research, there is currently no cure.
Mitochondrial donation works by transferring the nuclear DNA from an affected woman's egg into a healthy donor egg with functioning mitochondria. The technique remains in the early stages and long-term outcomes are still being studied.
However, this new research from the Newcastle University-based team who first pioneered the technique marks a significant milestone in what has been a years-long journey of scientific innovation, ethical debate and policy development.
'At its heart, mitochondrial donation is about choice,' said Ms Curtis.
'This breakthrough gives families more options to have healthy children and is a powerful reminder that mitochondrial research is moving forward – and hope is very much alive.'

Cockroach infestation closes hospital kitchen
A cockroach infestation has forced a hospital to temporarily close its main kitchen. Swansea Bay health board said it discovered the infestation in the under-croft area at Singleton Hospital, Sketty, which had affected some parts of the kitchen. In a statement, it said no clinical areas were affected and all catering staff and food production had been moved to Morriston Hospital's kitchen in Swansea. "All food produced previously at Singleton and stored in cold store freezers has been discarded as a precaution," the health board said, adding it was working closely with Environmental Health to eradicate the infestation. The health board added no patient meals have been impacted. The dining room and coffee shop on site remain open, it said, with food produced off site or purchased from alternative suppliers.

Obesity fuelling UK's sleep problems as apnoea cases soar by 214% in decade
Rising obesity is a key factor in the soaring cases of sleep apnoea in the UK, experts have said, as new data shows cases have tripled in the last decade. Analysis of NHS data in England and Wales between 2014 and 2024 revealed a sharp rise in diagnosed cases of the condition. The figures showed there were 114,640 cases reported across NHS trusts in 2014. But by 2024, this had risen to 360,070, marking a 214 per cent increase in diagnoses over the last decade. The data, obtained by The Odd Company through Freedom of Information requests, showed cases rose on average by 13.69 per cent year-on-year, with over 2 million cases diagnosed overall in the period. Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder that causes repeated breathing interruptions during sleep. As well as resulting in ongoing tiredness, if left untreated, it can potentially cause various health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes and depression. 'Your upper airway is held open by muscles, so as you fall asleep your airway naturally narrows in on itself. The first thing you find is the airflow gets turbulent, so that makes the soft structures vibrate, which is snoring. 'But with sleep apnoea, it actually closes and you have this period of not breathing. Your body will only tolerate this for a period of time before it actually has to wake you up and pull you back from the deep state of sleep, into a shallow state or completely awake. So you get really fragmented, poor quality sleep.' He said one of the main factors in sleep apnoea is obesity, which is also on the rise in the UK. 'What you're looking at is the collapsibility of the upper airway, so this happens because the muscles relax as you fall asleep. If you've got more weight around your neck, it just pushes in a bit more. 'Menopause is another risk factor. That's often to do with the redistribution of weight in the body as you go through that transition, so you tend to get a bit more around that area which pushes in.' He added that 85 per cent of people who have sleep apnoea are undiagnosed due to the difficulties in knowing whether they are displaying symptoms. Rivers said her son looked at her in "pure panic" and admitted to swallowing two magnets from a game, Kluster. 'He was putting one magnet on either side of his hand, and on different places on his body to see if they would stick together,' she said. 'Then he told me he wanted to see if they'd still stick if there was saliva between them — so he put one on the inside and one on the outside of his mouth,' she explained. 'They connected — and then he put them both in his mouth. He said he got the urge to swallow. He was choking on it because they're just smaller than a mint humbug.' Kluster is marketed as a dexterity game. Players take turns placing magnetic stones within a circle of rope, trying to avoid triggering a chain reaction of the magnets snapping together. Borderline Editions, the game's manufacturer, states that the recommended age for playing Kluster is 14 and up, which is noted on its packaging and website. The company states: 'Kluster contains small magnets with a magnetic induction flux greater than 50 kG²mm² which can be ingested. Therefore Kluster is not a toy and should be kept out of reach of children under 14 years old. Magnets stuck to each other or to a metal object inside the human body can cause serious injury or death. If magnets are swallowed or inhaled, seek medical assistance immediately.' Eli was rushed to Grantham and District Hospital, where an X-ray revealed that the magnets snapped together inside of his stomach, traveled to his small intestine and got stuck. 'When we told the doctors he'd swallowed two magnets, a lot happened very, very quickly,' Rivers recalled. Rivers said doctors were concerned the magnets would attract through the walls of vital organs or tissue, causing life-threatening internal damage. They tried using laxatives, performing an endoscopy and keyhole surgery to remove them but all were unsuccessful. With a high risk of internal damage, doctors transferred him to Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham for emergency surgery. 'They tried with multiple instruments and just couldn't get them,' Rivers said. 'In the end they opened him up — the incision was about 10cm, or four inches.' Following the six-hour surgery on May 22, Eli spent four days in the hospital before making a full recovery. Rivers said she has thrown the game away and is now urging other parents to make sure that it's not used by young children. 'You want to encourage children to play with toys to get them off devices — and then something like this happens,' she told the outlet.
