‘Why not us?' Lincoln freshmen shine in 3A state opening-round win over Federal Way
His line: five points, five rebounds, four blocked shots and a steal. Beyond that, who knows how many altered Federal Way shots in the paint defensively. Perhaps above all else, Holt just had a presence. Nothing easy was going to come at the rim against him or the Abes.
'Huge,' Lincoln coach Ryan Rogers said of his freshman's performance. 'And that's what we try to preach to the kids, because kids get so caught up on getting buckets and scoring. There's so many other ways you can impact the game.'
Not a bad Tacoma Dome debut for Lincoln's freshman, and it's scary to think where Holt could be in a few years' time if he continues on his current trajectory.
'I feel great right now,' Holt said. 'The intensity going up every time.'
Lincoln trailed against Federal Way a couple weeks ago in the bidistrict tournament semifinals before mounting a late comeback and stealing a win. This time around, Lincoln led most of the game. The lesson learned from the first meeting was to play freely.
'Don't get in our heads,' Holt said. 'Just have confidence when we shoot and play defense.'
Freshman guard Davion Shareef-Dulaney scored 11, sophomore guard Trey Collier and junior forward Kasey Williams added 10 apiece and the team's leading scorer came off the bench: sophomore guard Uriah Wilson, who made four of his five 3-point attempts, including a clutch three in the fourth quarter.
'Be ready for your opportunity,' Rogers said. 'O'Shea (Lamar) got two quick fouls so we needed somebody to step up. Uriah came first with his defense and that just gives you that confidence to let it fly when you get those open opportunities.'
Federal Way guard Brayden McVey scored a game-high 20 points, but Federal Way struggled offensively as a team, shooting just 32.2 percent from the field and going 0-for-11 from beyond the arc.
Still, the Eagles cut the Abes' lead to two points with under a minute to play, but Shareef-Dulaney iced the game late with a pair of free throws.
Lincoln features two juniors and no seniors on its roster, one of the state's youngest top teams. But the Abes aren't hoping to build for the future; Lincoln wants to win it all now, this weekend.
'We got that dawg in us,' Holt said. 'We can't be scared of no one.'
Edmonds-Woodway awaits in the 3A quarterfinals on Thursday at the Tacoma Dome.
'I think there's a lot of people who are counting us out, a lot of people saying 'In a couple years,' but we want to make sure we make our statement now,' Rogers said. 'Why not us?'

Realistically, Tomlin, under contract through the 2027 season, isn't going anywhere no matter the outcome of this season. But the fan base will undoubtedly grow restless if another season passes without a playoff win." Everything Pryor wrote about Tomlin is right on the money — but the Steelers' overall placement as the 16th-best team makes little sense. With Pro Bowl-level talent galore on the defensive side of the ball and a completely retooled offense, Pittsburgh deserves a top-10 placement at least. The NFL MVP award has crystallized this concept over the past decade, forcing oddsmakers to evolve and leaving foolish bettors throwing good money after bad bets. The saga began in 2018, when Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in his first full season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback. The overnight sensation won the MVP, after having odds in the neighborhood of 100/1 the previous summer. Sure enough, the very next season Lamar Jackson did the exact same thing for the Baltimore Ravens. He, too, began the year with 100/1 odds and ultimately hoisted the award. This outlier two-year stretch disrupted what had become a predictable trend of established quarterbacks. However, normalcy was promptly restored, as Aaron Rodgers then went back-to-back for his third and fourth MVPs in Green Bay. But some bettors are still hoping to catch lightning in a similar bottle this season. DraftKings head oddsmaker Johnny Avello has seen significant action on Justin Fields of the New York Jets (200/1) and Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns (150/1). 'This is all early money and speculation. It's guys with high odds and people taking a shot,' Avello said. 'They're only taking prices that will be long gone if guys start out well.' I would classify those as reckless wagers and 'dead money'. Now, I might have said the same thing in 2018 and 2019 about the eventual winners, but at least the industry has evolved since then, forming a tighter market. Oddsmakers have learned a great deal about creating odds for awards, which is very different from generating odds for actual games. 'I used to not like it but it's been really good because the odds have become much more sophisticated than they were in the beginning,' said SuperBook VP of Risk Management Ed Salmons, a veteran NFL oddsmaker. 'Just following it for the past eight years, it's easier to do now and it's a staple out there. It's definitely something we book every year, and for the most part, we do pretty well with it.' Essentially, oddsmakers have learned from their mistakes with Mahomes and Jackson. No longer will sportsbooks offer such long odds for a quarterback of a potentially high-powered offense. By comparison, QBs with longshot odds entering the 2025 season include Brock Purdy (25/1), Jared Goff (31/1), and Trevor Lawrence (40/1). The usual suspects are the betting favorites with Jackson leading the way with consensus +500 odds. Reigning MVP Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Mahomes are right behind at +600, while Jayden Daniels (+850) has entered the mix in just his second season. The shortest odds for any non-quarterback is Saquon Barkley with consensus 50/1 odds. He was a finalist last season with 2,005 rushing yards, the eighth-most in NFL history, but ultimately a quarterback won the MVP for the 12th straight year. Salmons firmly believes a quarterback will win MVP for the rest of time, given how pass-happy the NFL has become over the years. 'All leagues have gravitated toward the same stuff. A kicker (Mark Moseley) won in 1982. The Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders have both had training camp and offseason drama involving some of their best players. For the Bengals, Trey Hendrickson has long been involved in trade rumors as Cincinnati has been unwilling to give him a new contract. In Washington, Terry McLaurin has also been in a contract dispute, which eventually led to the receiver requesting a trade. The future of both players with their respective teams is in doubt, but for now, the Bengals will play the Commanders in Week 2 of the preseason. What can be expected during the Monday night game? Noah Fant will have a big debut The Bengals are expected to play their starters for a couple of drives, as they did last week in their 34-27 loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. That was a high-scoring game for a preseason matchup, but high point totals are to be expected from the Bengals this season. Last year, they had one of the best offenses and one of the worst defenses in the league, and not much has changed. The defense won't get any better if Hendrickson doesn't suit up for the team. The defensive end has been a training camp hold-in, and the Bengals are reportedly listening to trade offers. Joe Burrow and crew are still going to score enough points to win a lot of games, though. Burrow kicked off what could be an MVP-caliber season in preseason Week 1 with two touchdowns in limited action. The former Heisman Trophy winner is too talented for the competition he faces in preseason, and even in just a drive or two against the Commanders, the quarterback could once again put up big numbers. Burrow might put an emphasis on targeting one of his newest weapons. Noah Fant was signed during training camp after the Seattle Seahawks released the former first-round tight end, and he has been a standout performer so far. The Commanders game will be Fant's live-action debut with the Bengals. As a speedy tight end with the ability to make plays deep down the field, Fans seems like a dream fit in a Burrow-led offense. Expect Fant to make an immediate impact and have a big game in his Bengals' debut. Luke McCaffrey steps up in Terry McLaurin's absence With McLaurin on the sideline, Luke McCaffrey has reportedly made massive strides. The receiver is a security blanket option for reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels. Washington has a much-improved receiving corps from their unit last year, mainly because the Commanders traded for Deebo Samuel. Washington needs McCaffrey to have a productive year, though, especially with the drama surrounding McLaurin. McCaffrey comes from a football family. He is capable of lining up outside or playing in the slot, and he even returned kicks at times last year. It only resulted in 18 catches for 168 yards, though. Kliff Kingsbury has observed the improvements from McCaffrey that should lead to more production in year two. McLaurin, if he gets back into the fold, is a do-it-all receiver. Samuel is the yards-after-catch bowling ball, and Noah Brown is the big jump ball threat. McCaffrey provides a niche as a potential high-volume, short-yardage receiver that Washington needs. The second preseason game of the year will be a time for McCaffrey to prove that he is ready for a big role. McLaurin was activated from the PUP list, but his contract issue hasn't been resolved and it will take him time to get ramped up even if a new deal is secured soon. Daniels is still a young player in the NFL, so he needs help around him, and McCaffrey could earn his trust with a big preseason performance.
